Nice looking Elder, John. I wish I took the time to finish mine. I had the chrome covering (still do, as a matter of fact) and the authentic colors for the fuselage. I was going to order those chorme spoked wheels for it too. I was also going to put an OS 52 Suprass four stroke on the plane.

Eureka. Yup, rain and fog. From about April to about November, the weather forecast was always the same. Coastal low clouds and fog, clearing at about 2:30 PM for maybe an hour, then back to coastal low clouds and fog. I recall riding my motorcycle (east) inland on CA 299 and the temperature would climb about 10 degrees per 10 miles driven.. ha.. until it reached about 110 degrees, hot and dry. Of course, that was summer time.

I started RC'ing in Eureka, actually in Samoa (small town on the spit along the west side of the bay) where they had an old abandoned airstrip. That was way back in 1977 or so, but stopped because of the ship underway schedule (Coast Guard). And I was transfered to New York City after that and there wasn't much RC'ing going on in the city then, so I dropped it until I finally retired in 1997 and picked up again on the hobby, and I've been enjoying the flying ever since.

Santa Rosa is nice. I went to a senior CG school in Petaluma for a month back in 1990. Very nice area.

Here I am again, already-bruce88123-I see you work for FEDEX as a pilot. Did you ever meet a pilot (retired now) named Ralph Grella? He flew for the Flying Tigers before flying for FEDEX. Just wondering. He belongs to this club out here.
John

Actually I'm a Sr Avionics Mechanic. When I "fly" the planes I do it from the jumpseat unfortunately. Didn't intend to mislead. Also didn't know Mr. Grella. I did fly in the past but not for FedEx.

bruce88123-Thanks for the reply. Even though you only fly from the jumpseat, at least you get to fly some. I work for FEDEX too, but I'm only a lowly pick-up & delevery driver. It pays the bills, and I get to fly almost every week-end. The "Honey-Do" list keeps me home some week-ends, but not very many. Only been flying about 7 years, but I can't think of anything I'd rather be doing. I've flown U-control on and off (never very serious) since the early 60's. Built quite a few kits. Finally got into RC and just can't get enough. The bug has bitten and I'm not complaining. 15 in the hangar at this time, all ready to fly!!
Happy flying-John

Don't play down your part of the company John. If you guys didn't do your jobs the rest of us wouldn't have ours. EVERY link in the chain needs to be there.

How do you get the quotes to show up in your post. Like the one in post $802. Thanks

First, use the 'reply' selection rather than going to the bottom and filling in stuff. Then, in the boxes above, you will see the 'quote original' box. Clicking on that will put what you want in the quotes section and then send it out.

Well, I guess I am out of the trip this winter. Talking about it last winter did make it a little more bearable though. I got a Great Planes Super Sportster 40 kit to keep me busy this winter. As long as my glues don't freeze I will be OK.

Bev, with all of the experienced modelers that you have at the field you won't have any problems that you can't handle. Just don't let them build it for you.

I finally finished the first gallon of fuel last weekend. I can't beleive it lasted me that long. When I first started flying years ago, I think I went through about a gallon in a week or two. That was flying every day too.

Here is what is going to keep me busy. I started a build thread so feel free to pop in.

JR,
No I won't let them build it, although a few over the shoulder pointers will definitely be appreciated.
I saw improvement in myself this week. Hooray for me. It has been right pattern all week, and I practiced approaches for 3 days straight.....I think I finally got the jitters out. We have crosswinds all winter here and a lot of right pattern so I really, really needed to get over it soon.

Nice to see we have John from the extreme west coast. We don't deal with a lot of fog except in the winter and even then,....very, very, early in the morning over our field....I would love to take off and land in that stuff.

We've got a Big Bird and Jet Fly-in this weekend. should be a blast as usual. Of course, that means that I won't fly till the beginning of next week.

Have a great weekend gents.

Bev

CGR-So, you ride a motorcycle, too, eh? Yep, I've ridden 299 from Arcata all the way to I-5. Did you ever go out Hy Wy 36 owards Red Bluff? Another great motorcycle road. Nice ride, and as you say gets warmer as ya go East. I only ride to work and back now. Used to ride a LOT. After playing in the dirt a few years, it was on to Gold Wings for the road. Currently riding my 5th Gold Wing. Put over 100 K each on the last two of 'em. So, you started RCing in Somoa? Then I'll bet you have eaten at the Samoa Cook House many times. I know I sure have. Like every time I was up in that neck of the woods. And Petaluma, eh? That's where I work out of now. Driving for FEDEX Freight. You must have been out at the Two Rock Coast Guard Training Center, then. I deliver out there quite often. Doin' my best to keep Bruce busy, er on this end it is Bruce keeping me busy.
Bev-You wouldn't like flying in the fog. It's cold, first of all, so you couldn't wear your normal flying outfit. And the worst part is your plane just disapears all of a sudden. One morning a bunch of us were waiting for the fog to lift and one guy went up staying low just doing circuits. I said Hey go up and check the ceiling for us. He said OK but you guys help me watch for it when it comes down out of the fog. Luckily the ceiling was high enough that he spotted his plane coming down before if lawn darted. He even did it about five more times. Said it made things more challenging. Me, I'm a chicken-I waited 'till the fog lifted. Have a great Fun-Fly this week-end.

Hi John.

I don't ride anymore. I had a few close calls with some jerk drivers that both ignored me and didn't see me. I finally had enough and sold it. That was several years ago.

Yep, I've eaten at the Samoa Cookhouse. And I've ridden both 299 and 36. 36 is quite a challenge, especially on the western side of the coastal range. Back when I was stationed there, 36 had spots that were washed out from winter storms and ended up being unpaved. I don't know what it's like now, though. Another challenge and a beautiful ride is going from 101 around through Ferndale, Capetown (Cape Mendocino) Petrolia and back to 101 along the Avenue of the Giants. And another great ride is along the Rt 1 extension on the north side of Fort Bragg, starting, again, at 101 below Garberville. Great rides. And, of course, the entire Rt 1 along the north coast is absolutely breath taking. I did a total of 9 years in Eureka in three different assignments. Really did some riding up there. 101 north to Crescent City is also a nice ride, especially through the Roosevelt Elk herds in the national park up there.

I went to several schools at the CG base in Two Rock. Really love that area.

Regarding flying in the fog, well, I was doing just that a few weeks ago here in NJ. I didn't realize how low the ceiling was until I went into it. Scary. I just cut the throttle back to idle and waited for it to pop out while listening intently. When I recoverd, I landed and thought about it a while and then went home.

Bev, you ought to try that some time. That will humble anyone quickly!! Especially if you don't realize what's going on when it disappears in the low level clouds. On second thought, it may not be a good idea..

Dick.

Bev, one thing you haven't mentioned is how you and that rudder are getting allong.

I have been pushing myself to use rudder more on my Kavalier. Even on that bird the rudder puts it into a steep bank. If you add opposite aileron it doesn't look too bad. Easy way to remember is to squeeze the sticks together or pull them apart.

Dick,
Sounds like fun to me Besides, N47POS (my new name for Son of Skyraider, the Amphibeous......and an accurate descriptive name it is if you saw how bad the covering on the wing is now) is just waiting to commit suicide.

JR, yep, working on the rudder (up high) ...N47POS may want to commit suicide, but I'm not ready to go all "Kovorkian" yet!!!
Bev

You mean our airfield at Markham? If you are flying in (and approaching KFLL from the west on final to land, you may fly right over Markham Park where we fly) It is the NW corner of I-595 (which becomes I-75 just west of us and is also known as Alligator Alley across the state to Naples) and the south end of the Sawgrass Expressway. 16000 W. State Rd 84 is the address in Sunrise Florida for Markham Park. Bring your AMA card. we hope to see you there flying with us.
Bev
