Hi John. I don't ride anymore. I had a few close calls with some jerk drivers that both ignored me and didn't see me. I finally had enough and sold it. That was several years ago. Yep, I've eaten at the Samoa Cookhouse. And I've ridden both 299 and 36. 36 is quite a challenge, especially on the western side of the coastal range. Back when I was stationed there, 36 had spots that were washed out from winter storms and ended up being unpaved. I don't know what it's like now, though. Another challenge and a beautiful ride is going from 101 around through Ferndale, Capetown (Cape Mendocino) Petrolia and back to 101 along the Avenue of the Giants. And another great ride is along the Rt 1 extension on the north side of Fort Bragg, starting, again, at 101 below Garberville. Great rides. And, of course, the entire Rt 1 along the north coast is absolutely breath taking. I did a total of 9 years in Eureka in three different assignments. Really did some riding up there. 101 north to Crescent City is also a nice ride, especially through the Roosevelt Elk herds in the national park up there. I went to several schools at the CG base in Two Rock. Really love that area. Regarding flying in the fog, well, I was doing just that a few weeks ago here in NJ. I didn't realize how low the ceiling was until I went into it. Scary. I just cut the throttle back to idle and waited for it to pop out while listening intently. When I recoverd, I landed and thought about it a while and then went home. Bev, you ought to try that some time. That will humble anyone quickly!! Especially if you don't realize what's going on when it disappears in the low level clouds. On second thought, it may not be a good idea.. Dick.
