Wading, looks like you went for a swim.
I would always send the RX to Hobby Services or Radio South for a check-up.
I know you range tested everything before the first flight so I will not suggest that!

Miles,
Range check? Don't need no stinkin range check!!! (sarcasm becomes you!!! )
I didn't bother with the RX after the "swim"... we opened it and it was corroded and had a little rust on it... someone had given it to me when I bought the first SkyRaider and it served me well for those several months, but it really wasn't worth sending in after we saw its condition. In the future though, I will send them back for testing after the inevitable happens!

Bill,
I agree with you completely. Thank goodness for warm weather and tepid lake temperatures. Yikes!!! I can't imagine going into a lake up north now!!
Bev

About this time of the year up north they don't go "into" the lakes, they walk out on them!!!!!!

Which is one huge reason why I don't live up there!!!!

Ken

Rog,
Thanks for the compliment, and you are very close to the truth when you suggested buying another Sky Raider. I'm heading out to my BCRCA club meeting in a little while, but later I will post the "good" portion of the trilogy!!
Great hearing from you.
Bev

* sigh *

Eulogy for a trainer:

Ashes to ashes, balsa to balsa. Of earth were you formed, and to earth shall you return. You shall not grow old, as we who are left grow old. Age shall not weary you, nor the years condemn. At the going down of the sun, and in the morning we will remember you.

Grease it in at Fiddler's Green, good friend.

Now where's that R/C catalog I was just looking at?

Charlie,
I loved the eulogy. I had joked about having a service out on the field to bury little pieces of my plane. (although a friend told me it was bad karma to have the plane buried in separate locations...you know, some in the field, some in the garbage, some in the Chiminea!) Thanks for keeping it all in perspective...Warricks Custom Hobbies, here I come!!!

gunfighterII,
Glad to see you are enjoying Beverly's Excellent Adventures In RC Planes! You never know what's going to happen next!!! Yes, I'm having a BLAST!!!
Boy, the thought of flying in the snow, BRRRRRR!...talk about being twitchy on the sticks!! ...oh wait...that gives another reason why the plane went in...it's not pilot error, it's weather conditons!...I LIKE IT!!!
When the snow piles up to your armpits, come on down and fly with us!

Bev, Ken,
Nothing better than a frozen lake for a flying field, smooth, wide open, and the power engines make at 20 degrees is great, plus sometimes in winter we can get a very low density altitude which does wonders for flight performance and lift, great for 3D stuff if you can keep your fingers warm.

gunfighterII,
Sounds fantastic!!! Also means there is never a crosswind since you can take off any way you like!
Be sure and take pictures of the plane and post them! I can't wait to see your frozen runway!
You don't have any trouble firing up in low temps? Also, do you fly seaplanes? Just curious since you mentioned the lake...without saying that you too had to go "swimming" for a plane.
Just talked to one of my fellow club members at the meeting tonight who scratch builds, and flies seaplanes. As it is, the only two types of planes I haven't had stick time on yet are warbirds and seaplanes...hoping to remedy that soon!

Gentlemen,
Here it is, the final installment of "The Good, The Bad, and The Truly Ugly" trilogy...The Good!
After wringing out the "Son of SkyRaider", Joel took it home with him, and rebuilt the entire front half of the fuselage all the way back to where the red coating starts at the tail. I still had the wing from the first plane that hit the runway, plus new futaba servos, receiver and crystal. Then he recoated the front of the fuselage with yellow ultracoat, and the leading edge of the wing with it. The underside of the back half of the fuselage, and elevator are still hot pink! It flies better that it did on those first 3 flights before it went for a swim, and I'm as pleased as punch with it. I also now have heavy duty nose gear thanks to Earl.
My plane is now affectionately called "Son of SkyRaider, The Amphibious"!!!

Bev,
What can I say, you do have good equipment and keep it in good shape.
Just remember that the receiver is the weak point in any crash.
Send it to service.
If you can get it back in the air after all that, then the two of you are destined to be together, FOREVER!

Bev,

One question...How come there is always a silly old model airplane in front of you in the pics?

I can't agree more on this one. Too many times people will just throw their receiver into another plane after a crash, and then later down the road they have troubles with that plane. Many times the plane will crash because the pilot mysteriously "doesn't have it". It's cheap insurance to send the receiver in to have it checked before putting in another plane.

Ok, I'll get off my soapbox now

Ken

Miles,
From your mouth to God's ear. I hope this plane lasts a long time. It really does fly great since the swim & rebuild. I also have to say that when Joel and I got back from the lake with the plane, one of the jet trainers, Stew, grilled me on the receiver...he knew that the first plane had crashed in the runway, and gave me the once over for putting the receiver right back into another plane. Between all you guys, I have definitely gotten an education on the subject, and will NEVER make that mistake again. As Stew said, "Do you want to risk an entire plane over a $60.00 receiver, or a $12.00 crystal?"
