I want to convert some video I have on tape to .mpegs (or whatever) to share with others on the web. My budget will only allow cheap new stuff or used stuff. I ran across this at Sam's Club: http://www.samsclub.com/eclub/main_shopping.jsp?coe=0&oidPath=0%3a-15464%3a-15500%3a686839&mt=a&n=0&BV_SessionID=_SC_1891812523.1041715421_CS_&BV_EngineID=ccdfadchegfffkfcfkfcfkjdgoodfkg.0

Is this gizmo worth the money? It looks pretty good on paper but? I know there are much better gizmos out there but as I mentioned, money is a problem. Can anybody truthfully say it's not worth the money?

TIA,
Milton Dickey

ps: If this is the wrong forum, where else should I ask?

My brother uses a product called Pinnacle Linx. If my memory serves me right he didnt pay much for it. It works pretty well I have used it several times.

The page says sesion expired so I have no idea what product yo are talking about.

I use a card called Avermedia TV Studio. It's a PVR card that has a built in TV tuner that can record shows to mpeg. The nice thing about the card is that it can also except s-video and composite video-in. I've captured video from both my VCR and my older VHS-C palmcorder and it works surpisingly well. I got the card for about $50 at amazon.com. It's also nice that I can watch TV in a little box while I'm writing this.

A real neat way would be to get hold of a DV camcorder with Video In, and play your VCR into it.

Many camcorders have analog-to-digital pass-through, which converts the analog video (say from your VCR) into a compressed DV stream in real time. This data stream goes to your computer via the firewire port.

The benefit is it's already compressed when it hits your computer, so your CPU isn't struggling to use software compression (which will limit resolution and frame rate) and you will get full-resolution, full frame rate video going direct to your hard drive.

If you're on a budget, perhaps you could borrow or rent a camcorder to do this?

Pete.
