My Multiplex BL-480 3D engine gets VERY hot. It even smells hot (not burned, but I can smell that it is hot).
I cannot keep my fingers on it because it is too hot.

I fly with training gear on so the weight is 1500 g.
I fly with 8 x intellect 3800 cells and without the canopy.

Does your engines get so hot?

Will it help to either increase or decrease the dots on my bladegrips?
(I fly with one 4 and one 6 dot).

I will try to find some coolingfins to mount on the motor, have your got any other tips that might help my motortemp.?

Regards Kim

High

your engine has a 4000 or so Kv rating
The corona is designed for a kv rating around 3000

I don't no why light machines recomends the 3d when the 4d is in the 3000 kv rating
I have herd they are targeting people with 6-7 cell packs.

Is your engine tacking of with the 4-6 blade grips at 1/2 or less power?

This means that it is not running efficent wich is why it is so hot.

%60-%80 power to lift off is ideal.

Your solutions are
1. Change the gearing, the stock gearing is a ratio of 1:11.1
Since there is not a gear any smaller than a 9 tooth you will have to find a much larger main gear

2. Change your blade grips to 4-4, 4-2, or even 2-2, this raises the headspeed because the blade has less thrust. This would put your engine closer to were it should be.
But beware of extreme headspeed. Your blades might fly off!

I myself have the 4d with elite 3600 8 cell packs and 4-4 grips. It takes off at %75-%80 power. I get flights betwenn 10-15 minutes.
The engine does get pretty hot. But i have yet to test it in cool temperatures. It is just starting to cool down in Arizona.

Good Luck

Hi Cambo, thanks for the reply.

I have 4-4 blade gribs on, it lifts at about 60-70% (with my trainer landing gear on, a bit heavy)

I think I will keep my current setup and see how it behaves when the trainer landing gear comes off.

Worst case is that I damage the magnets in the motor and I will have to buy a new one. That will proberbly bee the twist28 og the hacker 40C 12L.
