Hello,i`am confused here,to balance a plane laterally do i have to put a string on the center of the fuselage or at the prop nut?.Because every airplane has right thrust my FOCUS has allot of right thrust and if i put the string at the prop nut it`s not at the center of the plane,thanks for the help.

Use the front of the drive washer as the center of the plane. Most often it is set in the center of the fuselage. The engine should be offset so the center of the spinner is on a straight line continuing down the fueslage from tip of rudder to the drive washer.

Suspend from the drive washer and the fin. Add weight to the light wing.

Fly it is the only way to really tell. Static balancing is nice but tells you nothing other than you think one side is heavier. A couple good tests...

#1 Trim the plane ailerons hands off will fly wings totally level. Then roll it inverted. Does it still fly wings totally level with the proper aileron trim. If not then one wing is heavy. This is because the aileron trim to hold that wing up in upright flight will roll toward the heavy wing in inverted flight.

This is a course adjustment...


#2 the Fine adjustment. In pulls and pushes assuming that the thrustline is good....the plane may need a slight right rudder in the pull and slight left rudder in the push. If the elevators...stabs and all are set perfectly the plane will need this rudder. If the plane is setup properly and goes the other way or needs more than just a hair then a wing may be heavy...Harder pulls and pushes can show it...Example Do an hourglass type push or pull...These are 135 degs not just 90's...Come across inverted and push past 90 deg to a 45 deg upline...then do the same pulling to an invert 45 deg upline. If the plane deviates opposite directions...then it could be a weight issue on a wing tip. Try using modelers clay the heavy sticky stuff...This allows you to stick it on and remove small amounts.

If you do the 135 pushes and pulls and the plane tracks off in the same direction or the same direction roll or yaw correction its not a weight issue its an elevator not equal, wings out, stabs out, thrsutline off issue....The weight issue is a tough one.

I currently have a quarter taped to the bottom of the right wing on my Smaragd....No its not for luck. Its an experiment....This experiment has been going on now since September......I don't really thing it is changing much but on the other hand every time I take it off it feels like the left wing drops a little in hard pulls and pushes. With a simple quarter and some clear tape it doesn't have the tendency...

The real question in my experiment is: Is it my head? Is it my vision on keeping the wings level? Or is it really helping......


Trimming is a art form. There are very few airplanes out there that are trimmed out. In fact I would be there are only a handful of guys in the world that can say there is nothing the plane does that is not perfectly in trim. Most of us chase that magically Art form of trimming a model. In some cases it takes many many flights and many many 100's of flights to have the plane totally dead nuts locked in perfect...If there is ever such a thing.

It will tell you the fix for your ailment.

Bottom line if you have not flown it...you have no idea what the balance is like. Both the lateral CG and the fore and aft CG.


Make a change and if your not sure of its result upon flying it once...Fly it for a while like a couple weeks that way...Then change back...You should notice a difference.
