Terror, Why in the world would you wanna put a 61 on the nose of a magic? Youre going to fold something on that plane at anything over 1/3 throttle. Its gonna need a larger tank, whish is going to increase weight as well. Youre going to need to move alot of weight back towards the rear of the plane to offset the nose weight of the motor. You could prob do that by getting a square battery pack, and making an access hatch to mount it to about midway back on the fuse. You could also go with your rudder servo on top of the plane near the tail. All of those mods are going to sacrifice some of the strength of the fuse (what little there is of it to begin with), and put all your static mass (dead weight) out near the ends of the plane. Will make for some dramatic waterfalls and such, but be a pain in the butt to fly level. Most likely, its not going to be under 4 lbs, which will hurt the performance of the plane. Do a search on the various magic threads and read the successes and failures people have had on thier magics. I have awesome vertical with an old 36 on mine (lower half of the stick)

Good luck, and send pics, I wanna see that monster on the nose.

Steve

Hey MiL - Great looking plan... I love the simplicity... Besides, I'm looking for something to fit into my trunk!!

Let me know when you'll be willing to cut the plans loose....

The reasoning might be flawed but after helping a guy assemble his Piazzaz with a Saito 72 and it flew great. I figured that the Magic and a Magnum 61 should be okay.

I will check the threads and it is not to late to change the motor selection as the motor mounts are still not drilled.

Take care Jim

Ok, i fixed 'em up a little... not a lot but i fixed some of the major problems. They should be helpful at least. I use Autocad 2000 and i'm not sure what everyone else uses but i've put up a zip file containing a .dwg. If you need something else just email me and i'll upload it.

To get the file, go to my website, theres a link in my signature.

By the way, i took the 2nd and 3rd flights today in VERY windy conditions and it handled great. I couldn't be happier with it. Granted that i've never had a Fun-Fly plane before and it could be terrible without me knowing it. Anyway, it's fun to fly around i know that much. Also i made mine with a removeable wing, but to take the wing off you have to take all the servo arms off... or disconnect the control rods. So it's not too convenient.

Anyway, check out my website... i spent most of lastnight making it, hopefully i'll add some more stuff on my other interests before i become bored with it and never update it again.

Oh yeah, one more thing... i came up with a name for it. I'm calling it the Taco .25 since it's all yellow.

Jim, I wasnt faulting you for your engine choice, was just curious. The magic/limbo dancer needs to be kept as light as possible, and unless that engine weighs less than a 46 two stroke, its going to be too heavy. Definately add some triangle stock to the firewall, even with a small motor, it needs it. I know its only a matter of time until someone out there puts a 60 sized 4 stroke on one, I am curious to see how well it works out. The magic at 5 lbs is going to feel totally different than a magic at 4.5, or 4 lbs (yes you can get them down to 4lbs). It just takes alot of planning before assembling.

Good luck,
Steve

Steve, I know what you mean about the planning. I get my combat planes down to 1#15oz with .28 on the nose and know that the turning ability of a 52FS would just not be there with the extra wieght.

Hmmmmm, I happen to have a Webra 35 (the heli done by the factory for fixed wing) that is not in a combat plane at this time and it might just be the ticket.

Sure do like to get the chance to see what the posibilities are and benifit from the happenings of others. I am old enough to be tired of the school of hard knocks (part of the reasoning for the name)

Jim, do a search on magic on here, we had quite a few good threads full of pics n info. Some of the tips i used from others, and some of them I just kinda tried out on my own, and they worked. I can try to email you some pics if you want to see anything specific.

yeah terror, I agree with everyone, putting even a 46 is almost to much! ive had people put 40la's on them and hover near half throttle. my friend has one with a mds 48 and said it flies great! the plane isn't designed for speed. my .02 cents

check out daves site, the Stick-it bit.
says about the 40fp and how it has a great throttle responce and like said above light weight.
All Magics ( and the fun flys it coppies ) in our club run OS 32's, Irvine/Magnum/Thunder Tiger 36's.
Some have mini pipes but the standard muff is best for hanging to get smooth throttle.
have a look in this class of engine and go with lightest with most power.
Another point is to reinforce the rudder post, if our "little" engines are ripping them off, anything bigger will.

A friend and I took this on building TWO of these as a joint project. We each had a YS 120F engine that we would use for this plane. We divided up the framing and covering tasks and finished the first plane just a few weeks after we started..
