How do I get smoke originating at my wing tip. Tubing brings the fluid to the tip and then what happens and how is the smoke made?

Dreamer,

I emailed Roland matt about this and all he is using is a smoke bomb kind of feature. I dont know if he lights it then just times it right or he has a activation switch.

This was popular at the TOC a few years ago. There was an article in MAN (Model Airplane News) as to the design mods needed. The smoke is produces at the muffler and tubes in the wing carry the smoke to the tips. Any escape of the gas in the foam wing will dissolve the foam.

Smoke bombs work also however once ignited they just burn till done. The other method allows for the smoke to be added and changed from wingtips to exhaust exit.

Thanks, but I don't want to use a smoke bomb and I don't want to run muffler tubes around. I really want to run the smoke fluid out to the wing tip and then create smoke. I just don't know how to get the fluid to be smoke.

The smoke fluid has to be at a certain temp to make smoke so I dont really know any other way it would happen

Seems like a diffucult one to me, Which ever method used there is a danger to the wing, Hot oily exhuast gasses as stated will destroy the foam or wood if leaked.

And making the smoke at the wing tips as you wan't to do would require alot of heat as Andrew said. You may melt the foam, and may even end up with wing tip flames, not just smoke!!!!
What would you use to provide heat?, its got to add weight and alot of complexity.

I did see something on coloured wingtip smoke cartridges a while back on the A.A site.
But as EXCAP232 has already said, these style of cartridges can't be stopped and started.

The photos of Roland Matt's freestyle at the TOC, almost looked like common boating flairs?, The red smoke ones.

The only way to prevent the wing from heating up is what roland did which was add a heat deflector. I think he worked on this program for a while because I think Wolfgang would light it as he was ready to fly then at a certain point they would start.

Yeah I guess, if he had his routine worked out really well, he would know roughly when it was going to start, He would be able to pick it by a cue in his music or something or a timer on the 9zap.

But I guess if your going to win the freestyle round at the TOC youv'e got to have your routine down pat!!!!!!!!!!!!

Sure looks good!!!!!!!

The smoke bombs or whatever you call them in Roland's Plane were electrically lite from a button on the Transmitter. You would use what is commonly called a Davy fire in rocketry which is a means to ignite fire works and other types of pyrotechnics. you would simply run wires in the wings to a connector like Roland had done. I do not know the internals of his but all you need is a small 12 volt battery like go in alot of the car alarm remotes with a holder from radioshack and a micro switch set up so a servo activates the switch suppling power to the electric match to light the pyrotechnic device might also need a little piece of thermalite on the davey fire to help light depending on the device. I asked Roland where he got the smoke bombs and he said that he had them custom made for him. if you know any good amateur fireworks guys they can probably make them or look up stuff on the net and figure out how to make them. Also do not know any possible way to run the smoke oil out to the wing tips and light it to produce smoke you have to heat the oil with the exhaust which produces the smoke. Hope this helps some.

No smoke bombs. No muffler. Just oil to the wingtip, now how do I make it smoke? What and how can I make a heat source.

There is not any way you are going to make a heat source at the wing tips to make the oil burn and produce smoke it is just not really going to happen.

You might mount a couple of propane torches on each wing tip. As you pump the smoke oil out of the wings you activate the propane torches heating up the oil. Perhaps the propane cylinder could serve as the fuselage. Mounting a 5 gallon oil can to that for your smoke oil using a couple of arc welders to light the whole thing up. To power the whole thing, you could probably procure an old J79 from Air Force surpluss. Maybe you could do a test flight on Bikini Atoll!!!

Chee wiz fella, what do you want here?
