Umm, start here... http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/forumid_234/tt.htm

Many have built 1/5th scale "gassers", myself will be included soon, and manufacturers like HPI ( http://www.hpiracing.com/index2.htm ), Traxxas ( http://www.traxxas.com/products/nitro/monster/trx_monster.htm ) and Duratraxx ( http://www.duratrax.com/cars/dtxd97.html ) make them RTR.

Both weedeaters and chainsaws can work, providing it has a clutch... And the engine and case design is improtant when it comes to making it mount to a chassis and connecting it to an axle (or 2)... You can go shaft or chain, or even buying a gear drive assembly from HIP/Traxxas/duratrax if you want providing the engine is simmilar to what they use..

Some ppl have modded homelite's, echo's and many other weedeaters into the Tmaxx using the 2spd transmition and all, but not recomended unless the trans and drive system is all steel and or aluminum...

Some will enjoy building one, some will not.

I know I am!

The average weed eater motor is pretty low performance compared to the engines used in 1/5 cars.

Weed eater engines do produce tremendous amounts of torque as compared to a nitro engine. Sure, they make either only 1 or 2 HP, but the massive turque more than makes up for it! That means if you rig up a Savage truck to mount the weed eater engine, you can increase the gear ratios way high and greatly increase the top speed without hurting low end acceleration (the massive torque will give you the best of both worlds!)

The one problem I see (aside from overcoming problems of trying to mount the engine on an RC) is that the weed eater engine turns at way less RPMs than any nitro engines out there. You literally must greatly increas the gear ratios to way higher ratios for the weead eater engine to put out the same given speed of an equal RC that mounts a nitro engine.
