The video software bundled with Windows XP is about as good as it gets for free.

No offence, but you are crazy if you think that you are going to get good video editing software for free. With a Mac, I use the iMovie software which is very versatile, but Windows Movie Maker is of no comarison. If I were to reccomend anything it would be Adobe Premiere and that will run you about a hundred bucks. Best of luck to you.

VirtualDub is a great freeware program - very easy to strip out sound - my review here:

VirtualDub

...we have a TV show in the UK called the 'Gadget Show', they reviewed 10 different movie editing software products and the top recommendation was Sony Vegas Platinum edition. At £50GBP its got everything you will need and more. Got mine of Amazon.

+1 for Sony Vegas - Movie Studio, Platinum, or Full Version.

Vegas Movie Studio + DVD Studio is $89. Worth every penny.

If you're looking for something free, well you get what you pay for.
