The final setup is almost done now. I have checked the CG and it is balanced on the fwd half of the wing tube with the Rx batts just beside the turbo reg. I have left the battery leads long until I have flown it, if the CG is good where it is I'll trim them down some. I just have to go around the entire model and double check everything. I will fire up the DA-85 tomorrow to seat the teflon coupler, but unfortunately I won't be doing the maiden this week as my feild is still closed due to the recent heavy rain. Hopefully it will be dried out by next weekend and we will be good to go.

I fired up the DA 85 today.

It took about 12 flips with choke on to draw fuel up and get it to pop. Choke off and 4 flips later she was purring away at a high idle. I ran it for 10min at a high idle to seat the teflon coupler. Shut it down and let it cool completely. Once cold I repeated the process, but this time she went 1st flip (no choke). Once the 10min mark was reached I did a quick tune check. From the high idle I opened the tap (with tach in hand) and she roared into life, with no hesitation. It peaked at 6060rpm (27x10TH Mejzlik) pulled it back to idle then took it back up to check the mid range, which is still quite rich but that's ok for now. Vibration is at a minimum for such a big single. Only shook 2 of the 4 canopy bolts loose. Some locktite will fix that. I will however have to cut a small slot in the cowl where the header pipe wraps around the motor as it just touches the cowl under vibration. But other than that it's all good. Very happy so far.....

Even a twin was shaking out the canopy bolts in mine. I went with Tom's suggestion of replacing the metal screws with 10-32 nylons and never had another loosen up. I've done that on several planes since and not one has loosened a canopy screw. 8-32 screws work great on the 28% planes.

Try vibra tite formula 3, it has always worked well for me. Recoat after taking the the screws out 20 or 30 times.

Over here you can get them at most hardware stores. On my Sukhoi I just went ahead and sized the screws up to 1/4 inch which are the same ones that hold on the wings and the size used by most ARF kits for that purpose and to hold on landing gear. Like Pat I have never had one come out. One other plus of using the 1/4 size nylon bolts is that most of your flying buddies will have a few in their flight boxes in case your forget your canopy bolts. YOu can probably figure out how I know that.

I went with 10-32 nylon allen hex heads on the 35% planes because they have a lower visual impact. The 1/4-20 pretty much opens the hole in the tab up too close to the edge for me. http://www.microfastener.com sells the 10-32 and others about 20 to a package for a couple dollars U.S. 8-32 for the 35% planes doesn't work because of the existing hole size after the blind nuts are removed is just a touch large. For the 28% planes that have 4-40 blind nuts installed, if you careful removing them (use a little heat before prying them loose) an 8-32 thread taps in quite nicely, making for a very small white hatch screw.

Sorry I wan't able to visit when I was "down under". You're gov. kept me pretty busy. Tell ya what, I'd sure like to go back again someday. You have a wonderful country, outstanding beers, great night life in the big cities, and the girls are lovely

Converted my Sukhoi to the Futaba FASST 2.4 system with the R6014S 14 channel receiver this weekend. I could not believe the solid feeling of the 2.4 link. My initial range check was a 360 degree circle around the plane with the engine off at a distance of 200 ft. I then range checked it with the DA 100 running at a fast idle and went to the same distance. Finally just for grins I went out about 400 feet and with the plane pointed at me, got behind the front grill of my big Toyota Tundra. That is 1 DA100 and 6000 lbs of steel with a 380 hp engine block between me and the radio. Not even a hint of a glitch. Color me impressed. Got in 4 flights and all were rock solid.

Well the maiden went well today and all I can say is WOW This plane is awesome....

We got to the field early and set her up. I then did a engine off range check at approx 60-70m all was well. I put the data logger on it and there were a few fades on each antenna but no frame loses or hold. So we fueled her up and fired up the 85 and did another range check at the same distance all was ok. Shut her down refuelled and fired her up again, and taxied out. I got the sky to myself so there was quite a large crowd in the pits watching (as if I wasn't nervious enugh already).

Anyway I lined up on the strip and checked all the control one more time. I pushed the throttle up slowly and she was airborne in about 15ft at half throttle. I flew a few circuits to trim her out. Only needed a few clicks of aileron and a couple of up elevator and she was flying straight and level hands off.

Once I had it trimmed I opened up the Throttle an pointed the nose up. It blasted verticled without any trouble what so ever. Even at 26lbs and the motor running very rich it pulled like a freight train. The DA85 is a savage beast.

I settled into a few gentle aero's to check the CG and rate settings. The CG seems just a touch on the tail heavy side but it is very close to where I like it. My low rates pretty close too I just need to fine tune them once I get some more time on her.

I gained some height to check the stall, it was a no event really, as it slowed down to a crawl then it just dropped the nose straight ahead, so I kicked the rudder it a did a spin, and to my suprise I let the sticks go and it stopped on a dime. Man thing flies well. It does have some KE couple but not much. Once I get the CG right I will mix it out anyway.

Time for a landing so I lined up with the strip pulled the power back to a high idle and it just floated on in. You need to keep some power on as she slows down very quickly, so I just leave a trickle of power on until the wheel touch then pull it back to idle.

Did I mention this thing flies well.

I am very impressed with this combo it feels like a 40%er in the sky just so smooth and stable. Tom has done a brilliant job with the design.

I only had one more flight with it today just playing around and getting the feel for it. I will move the CG forward during the week then I'll get into trimming it for IMAC.
