hey guys heres is a new water drop how-to for you all to enjoy

alright guys finally got around to painting an typing this one up

i started out working in House of Kolor paints for this round but again, the same effect can be achieved with spazstix

NOTE: I HAVE TRIED THIS WITH FASKOLOR AND ALONG WITH A FEW OTHER PEOPLE, i CAN NOT GET THIS TECHNIQUE TO WORK WITH THE WATER BASED PAINT .... i have tired diffrent additives with no success, although i have not yet tried a glycerin, this may help but in keeping a bouble but i dont know if it will fix the faskolor problem

ok now that we have all the water based paint users booted out lets get down to buisness  :P

all you need for this technique is a spray bottle with mist setting not a jet setting!

color wise you can do this technique with any color you want but usually a light, a dark and something inbetween for the base coat will work. such as a red shadow, yellow highlight, and orange base. This time im useing a white hightlight ,black shadow and magic blue pearl for the base

Step 1
first step would be to prep your body as usual cleaning out with soap and water or wiping down with a wax and grease remover, i start by scuffing with a gray scotch bright pad from the auto body supply shop to promote adhesion for the hok paints.

i threw in a some fire and and a little extra something seen at the end of this how-to

Step 2

position the body laying on a flat surface as demonstrated in this next picture, i sprayed up from this angle to get a finer mist, and then chenged to straight above to get some bigger drops practice a little to get a feel for how the water will fall

the result

Step 3

in this step we start spraying with basic white for the highlights you really need to get a good flat angle on this and make sure to watch wear your over spray is going, i had a design up front to keep the white from making too much of a mess. i sprayed at about 30 psi with a very fine mist pulled about a foot back as low as i could get and i came in closer to just make them a little more obvious for this how-to

and here you can see the result and what your drops should look like

Step 4

at this point we want to do the same but from the opposite angle with a darker color, for this one i used black

NOTE: be very careful when handling the body the water drops are very delicate and you can disturb them very easly, almost like a childs fragile little mind  (hey this is the "darker" color step is it not! ok ok i'll leave the bad puns out of this one....

result

Step 5

time to let this wet little thing dry out here i used a halogen lamp to speed up the drying process (damn A.D.H.D!!)

Step 6
at this point i got bored and added some stencil work but here is wear you want to back it with what ever color you choose, remember that the white and the black will mute it down somewhat just from the over spray

what it looks like after it has dryed out

THE FINAL PRODUCT

Wow, you're gifted.

I'm guessing that a spray can wont work for this. When you paint the water drops, you just want to paint them right, so the last blue will show through around the drops.

Since you're Mr. expert on the painting , could you tell me where I could get a good airbrush tool. I would really like to do your flame designs, and I saw someone do this water techniqe a while ago and would also like to try it. I have an air compressor that should work for this and my dad has a cheap-o airbrush that doesn't do any kind of detail work. A cheaper one would be better, but I will pay a little more for quality .

Also, a cool idea for this would be to paint the drops with 4 or 5 different colors, like a prism affect. Or put lightning bolts behind them. Very nice work.

extremepaint- do you know if there is a "how to" for painting clouds? Something like my Avatar. That would be very nice looking.

micheal casy has a video out for all sorts of neat tricks like clouds and stuff

one thing you can try to do for an aeffect is take cotton balls then spray over them with blue or what ever color sky you want and then pull it away and spray white and you got a nice puffy cloud, unfortunatly you cant do much past this step b/c of the way we work rc but im sure you might be able to add a little more depth n demention some how

for spraying water drops that cheapy brush will do fine, if you heat up a spray can in hot water you may be able to get a mist fine enough to do the water drops

for the flames that brush still might work but take your time with the basics before you get into the advanced stuff

on a 1-10 scale, 1 being the a solid color 10 being a full mural, clouds would be like a difficulty of 1-2 just basic stenciling, the water drop would be about 2-3 b/c you have to be carefull with it fire would probally rank up there around a 5-7 b/c of the overlapping colors the stneciling and freehanding needed to bring it all together

Cotton balls, good idea.

I need a new airbrush. Trust me, I could almost do better with a spray can. It's pretty ancient, I can't remember what he got it for but he got it a very long time ago.

as long as it was a good quality brush to start you shouldnt have any problems

hell i could probally take one from the worlds fair and still bust out something that looks halfway decent

Again, another fine piece of work and write up. I seen on trick my truck, they did this hurrican truck, just before the water dries they made swirls, not small circles but big swirl and it looked like the storm was moving in. Wonder if that can be done as well?
Very nice look, I may need you all to paint me up a body or to before the pro series races start back up in 08.

It's amazing how old threads can come back to life. Did anyone ever figure out how to do this with water based paints? Did anyone try something like mineral spirits? It would seem logical that the laquer paint is repeled by the water, so why not water repelled by oil (mineral spirits would seem to be the best as it will evaporate, but not too quickly). Very cool tho.
