I have a 85" Yak with 40-50 flights and have really enjoyed it. Today though I found that both top cowl mounting screws had pulled through the cowl. I used the supplied gromets, but both the screw and the gromet pulled through the cowl.

Any idea on a good way to repair this?

repair? not sure...others will chime in...

but I reinforced mine with CA hinges epoxied to the backside of the fiberglass... I then use larger nylon washers.....

maybe you could fiberglass the inside of the cowl and redrill... ?

Hi There,

Sorry to hear about your problem, however get Neoprene washers number 6 and use those instead. The washers are a little bigger so they will cover the hole for you.

Thank you,
Reza Gh.

Mine started cracking too, so I reinforced the holes with CA hinges. I used 30 minute epoxy and then redrilled the holes the correct size. I haven't had any problems since then. The neoprene washers that Rezagh mentioned will probably help too.

You need a set of these:

http://www.pspmfg.com/CowlBinders.html

I put them on my Yak, and they are great, I used the stock screws that came with the Yak, and you can torque them down as hard as you want with no ill effects. It's really kinda slick, looks very nice. I put a little bit of silicone under them when I installed them, but now that I have it done, it certainly wasn't necessary. I've probably done 30 or so flights since installing them, and the cowl is still in great shape.
