eagle4442; Thanks for the reply. The next time I am up town I am going to go to a fabric shop and see if they can get Rit liquid. I did not know it came in a liquid form so I never bothered to ask, but I will now. Thanks again, Cal.

Is there any way to tape off/cover areas that you do not want tinted when you place it in the dye?

I would assume wax, or a masking liquid. I figure it would be like Dyeing eggs, wax should keep the dye from reaching the surface. Only thing is I don't know how crisp the edges would be.

I type this with dark hands and a happy heart.
Just dyed two canopies with the Rit box (crystal) dye.
Used 1 box ea. black and blue. Had the water at 140 and added a cup of salt. VERY PLEASED with the results.
This was my second attempt. First time the water was not hot enough.

Was so pleased with myself I forgot to thank you guy's for posting the methods.
Thank You

I heated water on the stove and poured it in a 5 gal. plastic bucket.
If the water is not hot enough, you will get absolutely no tint and may believe ( like I did ) this method doesn't work.
It works !

I was unable to get a SIG Someth'in Extra canopy to tint, using the dye method. I was also unsuccessful in tinting a Venture 60 canopy. I see some Venture 60s on the V60 WEB site with tinted canopys. I suspect the builders sprayed the inside of the canopy with window tinting spray,

You sure you had the water hot enough?

The smaller Starduster canopy was done with Navy blue.
The Midwest Extra canopy was Navy blue and black.

refer to my earlier post
"Covering Materials & Instructions" at
http://homepages.ihug.co.nz/~atong/ .
Easiest is to use the Polycarbonate spray paints e.g. Tamiya "Smoke" used by the card racing boys - clean inside of canopy and spray thin layers until darkness required is met
Advantage is the paint is made for the job and stays flexible and does not chip or break away. Painting on inside also stops any scratches in the paint. Check your LHS.

I neglected to mention that PET and food grade plastics are supposed to be resist to all dyes. Canopies are molded from many varied "clear" plastic.

Alan T.

Bob,

The canopy I dyed for my Fiberclassic Extra 330L using the method in my earlier post was made of pet material. Another owner had already tried to dye his canopy without success. The factory said that to dye this material you have to get the water temp. to 140 deg.F and use 10 times the dye as with clothes. As you can see it is possible to dye this material. I had tried earlier to tint the canopy using spray tint but it looked bad. This is a very large canopy a smaller one may be easier to spray.

O.K., you guys have talked me into running this drill again! I am newly armed with another $6.00 worth of Rit Dye.

In the morning I am going to break out "the little brides" turkey roaster, heat the water to 140 degrees Fahrenheit, dump in one package of Navy Blue, one package of Black, one cup of salt; submerge the V60 canopy and see what happens. (I think that I had the water at approximately 130 degrees Fahrenheit last time.)

I painted the canopy of a 4*40 with that transparent paint one time and was not happy with the result. Last winter I dyed the canopy of my Uproar 40 using two packages of dye and hot water out of the tap. I thought that it came out great.

Nice job Steve and Eagle

Wish me luck!
