Hi all, has anyone out there converted their CP to brushless yet?? Ive seen another post that says whats needed for the brushless conversion that allows you to use the stock 4 in 1 but I want to know what its like. Lasting, performance etc. If you have any info on this Id love to hear it.
What would I need to convert to brushless if I were to toss the 4 in 1 and could I keep the stock TX?
Ive converted my planes to brushless a couple months ago and cant believe the difference. I have a drawer full of brushed motors(wrecked a lot of planes learning to fly lol) no kidding Ive got like 15 brushed motors and currently 4 planes. I just couldnt go back to brushed now. Id cry
The quick delivery of power is what I like the most. When I jam that throttle the power is THERE.

Getting away from the stock TX and 4 in 1 is a good upgrade whether you go brushless or not. With seperates and brushless motors (both main and tail) you need....

RX & TX - (I'm using a JR6102)
Brushless main (Himax 2015 3600 9t pinion works well for me)
20 amp brushless esc (I was using cc phoenix 25 but now using Venom 25a)
Brushless tail (Feigao 12mm long can 4200 kv w/direct drive does well for me using a GWS 4530 prop)
Heading hold gyro (gy240 works great but cheaper one will also work) handles all the mixing automatically
10 - 15 amp brushless esc (electrifly silver series 12amp is what I'm now using, cc p10 worked really well)

End result is a great flier with pleanty of power and 2500 rpm head speed. Motors are warm...not hot after 18 to 23 min of flight using a TP1320 3s lipo. No more worries about worn out motors, hot motors and the heading hold is a really nice inhancement to the overall experience. The tail will still move around a bit but it will always center to where you pointed it eg. you jam the left stick up...tail slips out three inches and then recenters to original heading automatically.

I know there are better models to invest this amount in but....I did this strickly to have a tough little trainer and for the novelty of having a nice little micro.

Hope this helps.

Exactally. I also know there are better 1s but I just love the cheap parts and ease of fixing it.And like you say, with a few small mods and a few more bucks this thing can be made to be pretty tough.

Silly newbie question here:

What is a brushless motor? What does it do compared to brushed motor? What are the pros and cons? Does it require a LiPo?

Well a brushless motor has lots more power than brushed. They provide more torque, Last longer, quicker throttle response etc.
The cons are that they cost more, you need a speed control that can only be used with brushless motors (which are also more expensive than normal ESCs) I honestly think these are the only cons.
Also brushless motors like high voltage, I run a 450 brushless Eflite on one of my planes and I use a 11.1volt lipo battery on it and it doesnt even get warm. And thats pushing an almost 2 pound plane.
If you put 11.1 volts into a 400 brushed motor like the 1 in the blade CP it would very hot.So brushless motors also run cooler. 1 of the reasons they last so long.
Honestly I really dont know if you could run a NiCad on a brushless because all Ive ever used is Lipo batteries. Hope this helps you a bit

As the name implies, there are no brushes that can wear out. the only wear is going to be the bearings. They are much more efficient so run longer and cooler and require less power to do the same job. Barring major impacts (crashes) that can cause damage, brushless motors last...and last...and last...and.....keep running with the same power output...very little degradation of performance.

That's not to say you cannot damage them though. Brushless motors run most efficiently at high rpms so its best to run high curves...

0, 60, 90, 100, 100
100, 100, 90, 100, 100

basically above 80% will run the longest and coolest. You can damage a brushless motor by getting it too hot....180 deg ++

If you plan on flying a particular model for a long time, it can be very much worth the investment. The piece of mind alone (motor not going bad in flight) is worth it to me.

If you plan to trade up to a better model soon than keep the brushed motors, replace a few of them as they wear out and save your $$ for the next "better" heli. I'm closing in on 300 hours on my BCP (frankinblade)....230 of those hours are on the same Himax 2015 3600 brushless motor. The feigao tail motor has over 150 hours on it now as I put up with a brushed tail for much longer than I did a brushless main. Both run the same as the day I put then on new.

I got one of the good GWS Direct drive motors (many are bad out of the box....got lucky) and had close to 40 hours on it before I simply replaced it with the feigao.

Sounds like when my current motor goes south I should pick up a brushless motor plus a new speed regulator. How much money is that approximately? Oh, and can NiMhs run it? In which case I may need to pick up some LiPos.

You can run it with ni-mhs, lipos would really unleash the beast though.

My bcp is running a brushless main motor with nimh batteries. However, I am not using the stock 9.6v battery. I am using the venom 10.8v nimh battery which gives me excellent headspeed and lasts about 8-10 minutes. I run both syms and flats with no problems.

Here is my setup:
Eflite 370 4100kv main motor w/ 9t pinion
Eflite 20amp brushless esc
Stock tail motor using a gws ics400 esc
Futaba GY240 HH gyro
Stock 4-in-1 receiver only (removed 3-in-1 part of the board) (Note: this is the original 4-in-1)

With this setup, I ran it with the original stock transmitter. Now I am running this setup with the Futaba 6exh transmitter.

How did you handle the tail rotor mixing by getting rid of the 3 in 1 part of the board, and still use the stock TX? I thought you could only do that with a computer radio? Not true?

The gyro will handle the mixing required to keep the tail in place. The rest of the controls do'nt need to be changed, the CP's radio has all the required mixing programed regardless of the electronics. Although I'd set mine up on my 6102 if I put brushless in it.

I have the Futaba GY240 which is a Heading Hold Gyro. No mixing required.
