Hey Guys,

I am a long time glow pilot, but am about to go fly my first electric plane. I have a brushless speed controller and wanted to know if I need to worry about trim or throws. It seems at when I go full throttle the engine speed doesn't change at all, but I could be wrong. I am worried that I am not getting all the power out of the engine. I am hoping that these things are intelligent. It would be so nice not to fool with it like you would on a glow plane. Thanks again.

Adam

Depending on the ESC you have you should have to program it one way or another so the high and low are set, all of the trimming is handled on the TX, like the rest of the servo trims. You may need to make an End Point Adjustment (EPA) on the channel for the throttle to make sure you get all the way up to full throttle?

The speed control is the Hacker X20. I took the plane for a flight today and it just seemed like it should have had more power. The vertical test I did was towards the end of the flight though, so I am not sure if it was just low on batteries.

While we are on the subject, how do you program and ESC and how do you know when you should land because you are low on battery power? Thanks guys.

Adam

When you first connect the ESC the throttle stick should be all the way up or all the way down, depending on what the manual for your ESC says. Sometimes you have to have the throttle stick all the way down, turn on the TX, plug in the battery (stay away from the prop. because it could go nuts), turn on the reciever or ESC if you have a switch, watch the ESC it should beep or flash a color light, then when it does that move the throttle stick all the way up, that should be all you need to do, again depending on what yours does. Sometimes the throttle will be reversed, down = full and up = nothing, if this happens just reverse the throttle channel on your TX. And sometimes you may need to move the throttle stick from down to up several times?

Cool. Thanks for the help. I just pulled up the instructions on hacker's site, and its full throttle and wait for the thing to start beeping like crazy and then cut throttle to idle when you hear what you want to change. Kind of a pain, but luckily for me the defaults were what i wanted it to be. I do have a question though. What is braking? It is off right now, but I am guessing that it resists the prop spinning up on down lines. If so, i think i'll turn it on. Lastly, I played with the trim and end points on my 9CAP and it didn't change RPM or annything, so I guess it is just intelligent enough to know my TX is at full throttle. Thanks again guys.

Braking should just be immediate motor stoppage and holding the prop in the stopped position (spelling ) I don't think you want that on. I have always used forward only with planes, no braking, but I have used braking with trucks, and it seems to just stop motor rotation and hold it there.

Ah. That makes sense. I wish there was a middle ground so I could use some engine braking you know. Hmmm, maybe a suggestion for future ESC.
