We're betting somebody will crack the 1:20 barrier Saturday...so Stan and I implanted some RARE EARTH MAGNETS in the poles so they'll "slingshot" you around them. On the other hand, guess what happens when you fly too close... Wanna bet on what'll win - a 6 in. dia. PVC pipe or a balsa Raider?

Start waxin' those planes, balance your props, clean your glasses, and bring your A game to Central Austin Saturday. I-35 will be abuzz with trash talkin' to and from the race!

Well...the 90% humidity kept the times above record breaking but the ARCA (Austin, TX) field successfully dodged the 70% rain forecast so 3 Novice
Class and 13 Advanced Class pilots mixed it up for 4 complete rounds
but right after we started the Mains, the lightning sent everyone into Ligon
Hall for about 45 minutes. We had packed everything up but the
tension to finish the racing was too much so we resumed and completed
the race in entirety - 4 rounds plus the Main Heats.

The race results were completely computer controlled - thanks to Stan
Douglas who debugged, tweaked, and assembled all the electronic
components required. He also designed and built the bases of the
pylons - I believe all the pilots were impressed by our field layout.

Thanks to Powermaster, we had plenty of fuel (the same fuel used at
the NATS and all the NMPRA Championship Races) so we were able to
debut "Race Supplied Fuel" and a "Fueling Station" located in a
central location at this race. It worked flawlessly! During that
"Rain Break" mentioned above the pilots took a vote and it was voted
UNANIMOUSLY to investigate using a common fuel at all the 2008 races.
We will be looking for fuel sponsors to help us.

The success of a race depends mostly on the Officials - we were
blessed with a staff of The Best:
Stan Douglas - CD and Race Results Administrator
Chuck Waller - AMA District VIII Safety Director
Crash Siegel #1 Pylon Cut Official
Cliff Speer - #2 Pylon Cut Official
Lap Officials - Kimery and Justin Duda, Rebecca Turnbow, and Mr. Curtis.
Starters: Fast Eddie Flesher, Chuck Waller, Rafael Ledesma, Tim
Purcell, Ken Hopson, Bob Petrinec, and Jason Duda. (We rotated
starters because they were also racing!)

Thanks also to our Gourmet Kitchen Staff headed up by Robin Masek who
served up burgers, hot dogs, chili dogs, and Frito Pie.

Finally, a special Thanks to David Gresens from Spring (Houston) and
Jerry Stafford from Plano (Dallas). We hope they took some of the Fun
and Excitement back to their clubs and will plant the seed for this
new and growing Club 40 Racing Class…and visit us at our next race.

Hello Club 40 race fans;

Last week my wife and I were in Tampa FL to take care of some business and to do some visiting. I "just happened" to take along my Club 40 plane and then flew in a race on Saturday in Dunnellon FL. I am including the following race report from Lyman Slack.

CLUB 40 PYLON RACE – AUGUST 2007

The ‘End of Summer’ pylon race was held in hot (94°) and hazy Dunnellon on August 11th. Tri-County member Don Adkins was the CD of this race at Rainbow Air Park; Mike Keller and Bob Wheeler were checked out by Lyman and handled matrix and scoring duties. Even though many Snowbirds were still away, 24 pilots registered to race.

A few models decided to test their strength against the number one pylon; the pylon won as usual. Guys, quit trying to beat down the pylons; I guarantee they will win! For a change, there were no disastrous mid-airs, though Chuck Roedel’s racer ‘kissed’ another model in the last heat; it was repaired in time for the gold.

As always, the Rainbow Café crew served up their famous ‘burgers as well as their infamous belly-buster hot dogs.

Three rounds were flown with six heats each; they were followed with one fly off leading up to the Gold. It must be mentioned that during all of these heats, we really saw some great and exciting racing.

When the Gold Race ended, only three planes took the checkered flag; Tom Craig’s had managed to hit the pylon! The third place award went to George Derewenko, second to Chuck Roedel, and taking home the Gold was none other than Doug Bebensee.

The venue for the September Club 40 race will move to the Ocala Flying Model Club facility. We all hope the originator of this Club 40 racing program, Russell Stricker, will be back on hand for this one. We missed ‘ya, Russ!

For your advanced planning, the Oktoberfest race will be at Archer Field near Gainesville and the November one will be at Gateway RC in Jax. If you just can’t get enough racing, there is a Sport 240 race in Apopka scheduled for late September.

End of Lyman's report

Not only was it 94 degrees, but the humidity was very high.

Back here in Nashville TN, we're working on getting a strictly beginner Club 40 series going for next year.

The photos are of:

1) The top three finishers in the Gold heat (right to left)

2) a heat ready to go

3) the Yellow Shirt Racers (YSR) pit

4) The infamous Yellow Shirt Racers themselves; notice the industrial sized fan they have blowing into their shade area. They had a lot of company at times to enjoy the breeze.

5) The score keeping and scheduling station; these people and the other course workers really ran an excellent race. Thanks guys (and gals).

Doug Bebensee

South Texas Raider Racers
August 11, 2007
SAPB field, San Antonio

This race started on a bad note!

After Registration, "Novice" Lee Moore had Radio problems and Pete Dubree crashed and could not get his engine to run the rest of the day.
During a practice lap, Greg Vincent and Bob Petrenic had a major mid air. Ken Hopson also had an “emergency landing” in the pond during practice. Terry Large loaned his plane to Bob Petrinec and Greg Vincent, in need of a new wing, sat out the day. Craig Barnes decided to act as a cut judge.

Those who signed up:
Novice: David Gresens, Spring, TX; Gary Sustalla, SAPB; Lee Moore, SAPB; Pete Dubree, ARCS

Advanced: Craig Barnes, GAMA; Ken Hopson, ARCA; Eddie Flesher, claimed SAPB; Tim Purcell, ARCA; Chuck Waller, CLAMS; Bob Petrinec, GAMA; Terry Large, GAMA; Greg Vincent, SAPB; Richard Storm, SAPB; Ray Allen, River City RC; Chris Campbell, CLAMS; Jim Agnew, ARCS, Stan Lattrell, GAMA; William Wuest, Southlake Club; and Steve Young, SAPB.

Out of 19 pilots registered, we only had 14 available for the first heats!

Heat winners in advanced were:
1. B. Petrinec
2. R. Allen
3. C. Waller
4. T. Purcell
5. C. Waller
6. R. Allen
7. R. Allen
8. J. Agnew
9. C. Campbell
10. R. Storm
11. J. Agnew
12. R. Allen

David Gresens won all 4 Novice heats! He flew the smoothest course I have seen and had a faster time than many of the advanced planes using much faster engines!

Fast times were:
1. Ray Allen – 1:36.70
2. Bob Petrinec – 1:37.09
3. Chuck Waller – 1:39.03
4. Jim Agnew – 1:39.97
5. Ken Hopson – 1:41.31

In round 1, Eddie Flesher lost his plane to the “raider eating tree” at turn 1. He forgot to turn on low rates!
In round 4, Ken Hopson had his wing fold around #2. His plane had a soft landing in the pond and was retrieved by Richard Storm in his rubber dinghy!

Novice Main : David Gresens, Gary Sustala and Pete Dubree. Gresens won and advanced to the Advanced C Main.

Advanced C main: David Gresens, (NOVICE CLASS) 2:05.10, Stan latrell, 2:07.66, Richard Storm 2:08.20, Steve Young DNF

Advanced B main: Tim Purcel, 1:45.50, Chris Campbell 1:49.19, David Gresens 1:58.37, Jim Agnew, DQ

Advanced A main: A malfunctioning stop watch left us in the dark whether Chuck 1:44.40 or Ray won. Not able to re-run , as Chuck landed on a fence post and could not continue. Bob Petrinec 3rd 1:45.15, Tim Purcell 4th 146.94. From my view, Ray won as I had a cut and never caught up.

All in all, a very good day, although I think several pilots were suffering from the oppressive heat. I look forward to seeing every one at the next race Sept. 1st at the GAMA in Georgetown.

I would like to thank all the guys that went into the woods and thickets to retrieve what was left of by plane. I thought for sure that it was a total loss but not so. I managed to get the receiver, battery, switch and three servos that was in the fuselage. The engine, one servo and plane were completely destroyed.

See you all at our race on Sept.1, at GAMA. Map to our field is on our web site, www.gamarc.org

Be wise and put that switch in the trash as well! I learned long ago that a new switch is cheap insurance.

That's GREAT news about Amarillo!

Once Houston and Dallas host a race or two we can think about holding a Texas Club 40 Season Championship somewhere...like NMPRA does.

Austin is centrally located...(hint)
