Jared - Sorry to hear of your bad luck!

The gear area needs to be re-inforced with plywood and epoxy (inside the fuse of course) on both the raider and the LA racer. That is all I regularly do to them.

When you get it back together, set your ailerons at about 1/4" throw (on low rate if you have it) and the elevator about 5/16 ". I like to have a roll rate of about 2 seconds for a full roll at full speed. Others may like more or less. The elevator should give you about a 100 ft. turn at full stick.

Make sure you break in that LA with LOTS of oil. It is a bushing engine and needs it! Most of the guys I know run 20% oil even when racing.

Here's some shots from today. I wish I would have gotten some more action shots. The 4 plane pylon race was pretty cool...as was the Q40 that was REALLY HAULING! I think that thing was a good amount faster than the turbine that was out there!

RACE REPORT

24 pilots representing 7 clubs in the area showed up for the February 24th Club 40 Pylon Race. We had at least four gents flying their first race. Additionally, this was the first time Spread Spektrum radios were used in our competition environment – they performed flawlessly.

As most of us know, this race was to have been held in Lady Lake, but after that field was totally trashed by the early February tornados, the Ocala club offered the use of its field. Members of several clubs joined forces to staff the event, and AMA D-V AVP Jim Saiff was on hand to check out the races and to assist in PA duties. Southern Eagles Treasurer Tom Craig supervised the races while his lovely wife Hazel did registration and scoring chores. Tom also accepted donations from the Tri-County club as well as from those on hand. The AMA had previously made a generous donation to assist in their reconstruction.

Three rounds were flown, with no mid-airs, but the pylons took a beating! Two racers, Doug Bebensee and Jonathon Carroll, had perfect scores. Dom DiDomenico was one point off with 11. There was a flyoff between those with 10 points; Jim Neelands, David Wall, & Tom Longo. Tom won and advanced to the Gold race.

When the checkered flag dropped, first time racer Jonathan Carroll was the winner, followed by Doug, Dom, & Tom. Photos of the event were taken by Wayne Darnaby and will be available soon.

We still have one standing complaint from the pylon judges; some of your model's race numbers are still too hard to see! They complain mostly of poor contrast. Please, gents, make ‘em BIG & BOLD!

The next race is scheduled for JAX Gateway on March 24th.

Great photos!!!

I especially liked the series of the two airplanes in the turn at the end of the series.

Hi Doug....thanks for posting the link for the slideshow. I took the picxs then gave Lyman the camera and I didn't get back to send the link in time....you beat me to it. All in all, it was a great race day with some really good heats. It was good for a first time racer to win the gold race. Just shows that even beginners can do good.

Hi DHG....that sign is there for good reason. We fly jets. Some of our electric fan jets are hitting close to 180 mph and the turbines can reach that speed easily. At those speeds, a plane can get out of sight pretty fast. We have neighbors on one end of our field and we don't want planes flying over the houses.

waydar,

Sounds like you need to make them fly laps instead!

Great report, keep it up.

Got my racer all fixed up! It's looking forward for another beating this weekend! I also noticed that Hobby Town in North Austin now carries the Raider. I'm not sure if they're stocking the Racer yet, but they did have 2 Raiders up there.

I need to get a LOT of practice in before the trial run and the first race.

See you all this weekend.

Jared

Jared - can you and Todd meet us at the field around 10:00 a.m. Sunday? - we need to reset the pylons (dig 2 holes) for the practice race next weekend. We should be finished by the time the crowd shows up and you can fly from Noon until dark. Thanks!

Sky Raider Mach II modifications

On my son’s Sky Raider Mach I we exited the antenna behind the wing and attached it to the rudder. I am assembling a Mach II and interested in pylon racing in addition to general sport flying. In reviewing the photos from the Ocala FL Club 40 race , I noticed only a few of the planes ran the antennas in this fashion, most of the Mach II antenna were concealed. Where do you normally run the antenna on a Sky Raider Mach II pylon racer, through the fuselage? I was told that the control rods might cause interference in this configuration. What are the other normal modifications to a Sky Raider Mach II for pylon racing: nylon wing bolts, triangular bracing at the firewall, fuel proofing?

Thanks,

Assembling the Skyraider.

I put them together just like the manual says, except I replace the JIS machine screws with Socket (allen) head. 18 X 3 mm to attach the mount, 23 X 3 mm to mount the engine, and 4 by 25 mm for the wing bolts.

If you want to have nylon bolts break away if you drop a wing on landing, anything larger than #6 SAE will not do it. One of our guys is using #6 SAE nylon wing bolts with the Ball Bearing engine, and has had no problem. They do shear in a cartwheel. Of course, he went to the work of replacing the blind nuts.

With everything as the manual says, and an LA mounted flush with the front of the mounts, the plane is slightly nose heavy in flight with a full tank of fuel. This is very apparent, if your engine quits at 15 feet while taking off. To stabilize flight when racing, I use a 1/2 oz Harry Higley nut. Very small control movements, very. Dual rates helps a lot.

My antenna is mounted by installing the receiver and then making a 1/16th hole in the bottom of the bulkhead at the back of the radio compartment. I insert an inner nyrod into the front hole for the bolts which hold the fin and snake it forwar up to the 1/16th hole. Then I feed the antenna into that inner nyrod a goodly distance and gently pull the inner tube/rod out of the airplane. This leaves a couple of inches of antenna sticking out that hole. I do not use thread lock on the fin bolts, as I might want to use the fin for spare parts later. A piece of tape covers the holes, and holds the antenna to the rear of the fuselage. Check the fin bolts before each day of flying.

The upper blocks holding the landing gear have been quite soft wood. A rough landing will cause them to lat the top part of the wire move around. When this happens, I replace all three blocks with pieces of 1 1/2 in by 3/8 in Oak from Lowe's. Home depot did not have this size. You need to cut the fuselage sides to allow the bottom block. The side blocks, 1 in high X 1 1/2 front to back and 3/8 inch wide are fitted, a hole drilled and a #4 by 3/8 mettal screw used to hold them in place while the epoxy sets, then the bottom block is epoxied in place. Previously , I had I used a Dremel Router attac
