Took my Blade CP to the mountains and had a blast flying up and down the river.
Thought floats might be fun if somebody made them?[ima[image][/image]ge][/image]

wow... Youre a braver man than I. lol I wouldnt dream of putting mine over water. I couldnt imagine landing or taking off on water . All it would take is 1 bad drift and under it goes. But hey if you can keep it spinning under water maybe you could carve up a nice bass or something lol

I've thought of floats on many occasions. I think I would wuss out before flying over the water though. The quickest solution I thought of was to tape a water bottle, or soda bottle to each skid, then maybe a couple ping pong balls to the tal support. I don't know how well it would work though, it may be too much weight, I never got around to trying it.

Hmmmm... That's a good idea with the bottles! You may be right about the weight, tho... Those things are fairly thick because they have to resist the pressure of carbonation. Water bottles, however are thinner... hmmmmm.....

Great pic of the BCP over the river, btw... I'm the type of person who would just HAVE to try that if I was there, even against my better judgement

DVI,

Great picture, I know I couldn't do that. I'am afraid to leave the garage.

Actually I was thinking water bottles, but I figured I'd say soda bottle or else I'd have someone laughing histerically about a mental picture of CP with a 5 gallon water jug strapped under it... Actually that is kind of a funny thought despite the fact that it's physically impossible. I just figured I try to avoid a miscomunication, lol. Maybe I'll give it a shot, I'll take off from a puddle with water bottles taped to my landing skids, I'd probably chicken out with anything deep enough to get to the electronics...

LOL... yah, I'm serious that it's a good idea, tho... It's the perfect solution if it works. You could paint the bottles, etc. or even heat and reform them into new shapes. It wouldn't be that hard. Those are blow molded plastic, which is easy to heat and work with...

I'm going to go see if I have any empties in the car or whatever. I want to weigh one

You know, that's a good idea, heat them up and push the skid down into the center of them, or just make a groove so they don't move around to much. I still think we'll need something better than a ping pong ball or 2 for the tail support though, maybe it doesn't need anything.... perhaps tomorrow I'll see if I can snag a couple. I don't have my usual assortment of tools with me here, so my cob-job and jury-rigging capacities are greatly deminished... lol I wonder if there are any lightweight pontoons for planes that could be fitted to the cp...

I would like to have some light floats to put on my BCP too but not for water- for snow. I was thinking made out of foam and hollowed out to save weight. For use on the snow I dont have to worry about them being water tight. It would be cool if they looked like scale floats.

The big thing for snow is to have them cover a good amount of surface area. Tha can be tricky though because it'll change the way the heli flies significantly. Foam may work though, depends on the day too. If it's hard pack it won't be a problem, if it's sfot you may just want to pack it down to make a lnding pad anyways.

what I had in mind was someting about the size of cigars- that's alot smaller than water bottles - think that would look cool especially with a scale body, make it a bush chopper

You guys must be telepathic or something. I started this set a few days ago. I wanted to be able to land in my neighbors man made lake.

I figured since I have flown over it a few times, why not be able to land. There is no current or waves so I thgink it would be fine.

I like the snow idea also.

I am making them more round than square. the trick will be to be able to make them long enough to keep the tail up but at the same time big enough in the front to balance them out.

We will see what happens.

here is a link to a set I have stashttp://www.rc-float-flying.rchomepage.com/Electric%20Cores/basic%20article.html

Guys
I think the foam idea might work!
I will give it a try just as soon as I get a little free time.
Make the floats using the wood cross members and then set the helicopter skids on top of the cross members, Balance and attach skids using rubber bands. I think that would also set the helicopter high enough over the water that the tail should not get into the water. Anywat just a thought.

You know what might work awesome is 2 mousse cans. You know the small cylindrical cans that hair mousse comes in?? Bout 6 inches long and maybe 2 inches or 3 in diameter. I think theyd look awesome sanded down with light sandpaper till theyre down to shiny metal.

Yea thats not bad. How much do the mousse cans weigh?
What ever is used, It will need to be as lite as possible.
My Blade CP is stock with the stock batteries, dont think it could take too much weight.

I dont know what the weight would be. I probably have a can here but all I have is a crap vegetable scale. Maybe Cap'n Crunch will bring me 1 for Xmas

I think the mousse cans, stripped and polished to a shine would look great! You'd have to make some sort of nose and tail for them to really make them look like floats, tho...

I actually found 2 old cans of mousse WAY back under the sink in the bathroom left over from a former female acquaintance of mine. I emptied both of them into the sink until all the propellant was gone. I'm sure there is probably still a tiny bit of product inside them, but probably not more than a few grams or so...

The bad news is that they are a little heavy. About 60g each. That's more than a stock main motor.

I think the BCP could probably lift them, but you wouldn't want to try to fly for too long, or do any fast maneuvers carrying that much weight, I don't think...

Perhaps with a hot brushless setup, it would work, tho...

You could use the cardboard tubes they use to make model rockets as they come in various diameters and then use balsa to make rounded ends
https://www.estesrockets.com/cgi-bin/products.cgi?view,309
the only problem would be to make them water proof which shouldnt be too hard...
maybe paint and then a coat of polyurethane?

I am still thinking this is a good idea- using model rocket parts (tubes and nose cones). Anyway, here is a piture of a heli on floats that is basically what i want to make. Notice the tail fin which keeps the tail from contacting the water- an easy mod I think. As for the cardboard tubes, Estes makes BT20 which is a little over 3/4 inch diameter, that is what I plan to use. They come in 18 inch lengths so will need to be cut down. I am also thinking the nose cones to use are the balsa ones as the are lighter- I am thinking NC20B. Not sure what the weight is but they can always be bored out. http://www.scottsinger.com/insta-gator/Pics/r22_floats_airS.jpg

would be nice to have something like that for our micro helis but if they are out there I haven't found it. I don't even plan on taking off of water, maybe snow, but I think they look cool and may be good for a novice pilot like me as they cushion a bad landing I would think. when I build my floats I will take some pics and put them up. the main problem is I am a long ways from my LHS (100 miles) so it may be a week or so before I get there. I may check and se what walmart has- I know they carry some basic rocket stuff but I am not holding my breath...

I threw a little proto-type together last night for the floats...Used 2 bulk ink bottles and a plastic knife to hold them apart...Good thing is that The heli can fly with the floats on...Also would float which is another good thing...Bad thing is that it was tail heavey and the tail would want to fall back in the water...So the next thing that I have to do Is figure out how to keep the tail out of the water..I have attached a Pic so you guys can get the idea.
