CDMA! DUDE! I need a close up on them axles man, hehe. I was gonna do the same to my tmaxx diffs but couldnt see how to fabricate the steering on the end for the tube...

Seems like my maxx crawler might go back to its roots and get her nitro back!

Just a little update on the never-ending cooling system. The reservoir is now completed, and I have some pictures from this evening that show the changes from the previous shots.

The old picture shows the brass rod linking both end caps. At that point I was going to use the holes in the side of the can for inlet, outlet, and pressure relief.

I recently decided to run the coolant in through the top center, and out through the bottom center. With this configuration, there are no visible fasteners holding the reservoir together. I replaced the brass rod with two lengths of stainless tubing, and each is drilled to allow the coolant to flow. They were threaded at the split and screwed together. The threading on either end of the tubing allows both caps to cinch toward each other and hold pressure against the o-rings. I then added the fittings for both connections, and the top tee will also hold the pressure relief. I flycut a flat over one of the side holes to mount the can to the frame. Hopefully, I can get the relief device finished in the next few weeks and show it here.

I'll also have the reservoir mounted on the frame rail and I'll toss some pictures here when that is complete. Slow, but moving along

In the last couple of days I have been able to machine the pressure relief valve housing and internal piston. I decided to use a 3/8" stainless ball as the valve closure, and I'll have to pick up another silicone o-ring for the seal. The o-ring in the pictures is viton, which will be fine for testing, but will have to be changed to handle the heat. The piston inside the spring is teflon, and effectively limits the travel of the ball so it won't get too far off center during opening. It also has several holes through which the vapor or coolant can escape should the valve pop. I may add an overflow later.

I also relocated the housing to the side of the reservoir can so there are less connections in the system. The math required for calculating the cut depth on the side of the can was not much fun, but it worked out to look almost seamless. I think my skills are improving! I still need to cut a gasket and install it between the housing and can. After that, it can be tested with some coolant!

To the pictures...

Some day is right! It seems this thread gets buried if I don't post progress, so here it is

I mounted the coolant reservoir, and it looks enormous on the side of the frame. Once the fuel tank is on the opposite side, it will not be so striking. A set of covers over the upper suspension will even things out too. It is attached with one screw for the time being. I still need to make some clamps for the stainless lines, and then add the radiator and bracket. The pictures look lousy, but still illustrate the way it mounts.

I also started to make some steel drivelines (which I said would not happen ). I began with some mild 1/2" rod, and bored the ends.

Then I drilled for the trunnion pins and milled the ends. I still need to clean up, round off and deburr the ends, but they look ok so far. These will be the lower shafts, and I need to finish the mating pieces that will telescope, as well as the trunnions. The yokes for the differentials and transmission will be last. With the typical winter slowdown at work, I should be able to get both drivelines completed in December.

I'll post some pictures of the gearbox and completed shafts as soon as I can.

I finished more work on the drivelines, and there are now 6 out of 8 pieces complete. The lower shafts that connect to the differentials are still awaiting some measurements (mainly because I kept changing my mind ). The first three shots show the yokes, trunnions, and upper shafts.

The next pictures show the assembled upper shafts connected to the center diff, and everything mounted on the motor plate which I made some 5 years ago before plans started changing. I found that assembly in the garage, and realized that it would work much better than the TMaxx tranny. It will also help to ease the reduction gear between the motor and center diff.

The next pictures show the plate mounted between the frame rails the way it originally looked before I decided to go with nitro power. The 24v electric motor and double-reduction gearbox are mounted on top of the plate, along with a small fan to cool the motor. There is still the possibility of electric propulsion with a nitro engine generating power, but I just don't know right now. As things stand, I will finish the drivetrain with everything in place as it is here, and then run it off a power supply to ensure proper turning of all this weight.

Once I have a good idea of the operational limits, I'll start on the gearbox and engine mounts. The steering will have to wait while I have all this time in the shop to make some mechanical progress.

Also, the weight with everything on board is 21lbs., and still no batteries, engine, radio gear, or remaining cooling system

Those driveshafts are too cool! My favourite two parts of this are probably the turnbuckles and the axle pumpins, I don't know why, they just catch my eye. I can't wait to see some more progress.

How are the electronics for the steering coming along? If I remember right you were planning on using a stepper and some custom electronics?

21 lbs already!

It might just be a rock crusher instead of a crawler!
