4, The reason I am starting this thread is because i like things to be as realistic as possible ( and we all know in the real world there are no electric crawlers or at least none that I am aware of )

Last time I checked, real rock crawlers dont run on nitro

Radiator? Whaa?

Anyway, I completed the redesign and machining of the new bushings and washers for the cantilevers. They ride on less than .002" clearance and a lot more surface area so there should be no more weakness in the pivots. I also stripped both frame rails and tried to fly cut .010" off each in order to clean up the appearance after all these years. Needless to say, I totally loused up the process by not providing enough hold downs. There was some part vibration on the mill table and the resulting finish is gouged quite a bit in a few areas. Lovely.

The rails are still over .250" thick, so I can redo the cutting and clean them up or get stupid and use this as an excuse to make a tube chassis

Either way, the project stumbles on.

I do not have any pictures yet, but this weekend I will get some up here. The machining of the frame went badly in the beginning, so I decided to cut them with an end mill instead. That did the trick and now they have a nice swirly finish. I also took a cut on the cantilevers so they would match. I still have not begun the shocks. That is a tough one to tackle and something I never envisioned. Research will continue and if I do make something it will show up here.

I don't want to get into the whole electric versus nitro argument and I will probably never build a nitro crawler. However I am truly amazed at the dedication and talent exhibited here and will continue to watch this thread with rapt fascination. Much credit goes to you wh perservere in the face of non believers.

Hey yall. First off I would like to start by saying that I am new to nitro crawlin but I do have a slightly modified Tamiya Clodbuster and I am trying to find out what would be the best kit to start with and modify into a crawler, what engine to use, tires, transmission, etc. Any help on the subject would be much appreciated because it gets me on the trails faster!

Here are some pictures of the milling on the frame and cantilevers. It is a bit hard to see the striping in some of these images, but you can get the idea. The new larger bushings and button head screws are also visible on the corners of the cantilevers. They are now solid and 1/2" in diameter. I decided to overbuild them for strength. This is the third incarnation of those pivot points, and hopefully the last.

I am still procrastinating about the shocks. One of these days they may show up here

Anyway, pictures:

Regardless of the fact that this is a nitro crawler thread, there are few that have made one work. As a result, the helpful information you seek may be tougher to find than you think. Personally, if I were to use a Clodbuster it would have to rely on the Clodzilla IV chassis for flexibility, and TLT axles would probably be the easiest to adapt to a nitro drivetrain. A smaller engine, like .15 to .18 would make cooling easier to adapt and perhaps one of the aftermarket metal-geared transmissions might work well. The issue will be the clutch. I have yet to make anything reliable, but if you come up with some idea for a system that can deal with the heat and braking issues please post it here.

Good luck!

clod axles wouldnt work very well for this application. tlt axles might work alright, ust dont use a motor over say .25 . i've heard of a nitro rustler, but i dont think the trans is the same as the electric, which is popular for crawling. as far as the clutch goes, if you gear it down enough, the clutch will engauge at a low enough rpm that wear wll be minimized. example- lets say you use the tlt axles, and you are going for a scale look, so you get some moab 2.2's. 4 mph is about how fast the rig should go, and thats 270 tire rpm. if my memory serves me they have a 2.5 ratio, so that means 675 rpm out from the trans, so you would need a 37:1 or better ratio in the trans, but that also means your clutch would be kicking in at about 3/4 mph (roughly).

easier sad than done though....

Definitely the closest to a crawler I have seen from a nitro rig.

Still not very capable and annoyingly loud.

Seems more like a miniature motorsport to me when it involves fuel; and more like a toy when it doesn't. Many would and many wouldn't agree, I'm sure; to each their own. LoL

I do not see Dez's statement as bashing Matt's work, more as a sentiment toward the radical difference between the smooth, quiet, and clean electric crawler vs a noisy and potentially messy crawler. This has been alluded to in the past in this thread. I agree with the idea, too. The two platforms are destined not to compete with each other for so many obvious reasons.

Matt, that is a great video, and thank you for sharing.
