Wow, this thread really took off after I left town

check this out you nitro crawler guys.......a bit too big but food for thought. Its a liquimatic go-ped torque converter.

I never knew the go-ped had anything other than a centrifugal clutch... that's interesting, and could prove promising for some of the larger projects here.

I think Dez has a good point about the CG, and it's true there will be marginally more weight supporting the nitro system. As a competition operator, his opinion is educated, and one I value. No idea comes to fruition without it's share of challenges. I can only offer my solution to these issues, and I believe this will be different for each member's project. I have considered the high CG problem, and if the top grows too heavy, I'll widen the track as necessary.

As far as gearing, the little tranny from a TMaxx coupled with the 3.11:1 Ofna gears and mated to a 6.25" tire will yield a calculated 5.9mph top speed at 32000rpm on the electric motor. For a nitro motor, the top end will be somewhat lower. This, to me, would seem to result in a decent speed/rpm relationship for low velocity cruising. As a crawler, I have no idea of the performance because of the fact that the torque required to overcome obstacles is an unknown. This is only an example.

It would seem that with proper gearing, the nitro engine can achieve low-speed maneuvering. I think a 4-stroke might be a good option for this, as it is, by design, intended to operate at a lower rpm at the outset. I searched for a liquid-cooled 4-stroke for some time, and received a fair amount of feedback on that type of system. I am moving ahead with it.

why not go hydraulic, there are some very small vane pumps. A bob cat is a little engine that powers a pump. you don't have to go fast? just have the eng set at one speed, a manifold and servo controlled valves. also is it possible to go electro magnetic clutch? you won't build up that much heat that way.

That is a cool idea. A heli with collective pitch operates with a near-constant rpm at the powerplant, and the pitch of all of the blades dictates most of the lift. The two are coupled, and this could translate to a similar operation within a land vehicle. Throttle and brake mixing could be an excellent method of alleviating the neutral rolling.

How about a starter-generator type setup. Maybe a four-stroke with a can motor for a generator,( i saw a model railroad locomotive with a .32 heli motor and electric drive motors)
One might ask why not batteries then?? The best reason is there are no batteries!!!
OK........get him BOYS!!! Rip it apart
Here ya go http://users.erols.com/diesel/wada/index.html

i was thinking about the COG issue... do comp crawlers allow weighted tires/wheels i know of a guy that has about 100lbs of lead in each tire in a 1:1 crawler
and most RC wheels have air or foam in them...
just a thought its allowed by werock, thought maybe it'd be allowed in say 1/10 or 1/8 classes or however they are grouped

Yes, all of my crawlers use weight in the wheels. I use 8 oz's of Airsoft plastic BB's in each of my my 2.2 comp rigs tires.

Stick on lead wheel weight, and standard copper BB's are also commonly used.

all that generator stuff is too complicated... just gear the engine down to like 180:1 and set the suspension to handle the rocks.... done..

Possible cooling system?

Seen this on another site, looks like it might be useful?

Generator is not really not too complicated, neat thing is you have an on board starter when the thing conks out. And with the idle up feature, your fueler can be set right in its torque/hp peak range.

Hey Dez,, Killer Idea where did you find that?? I would like to test that for parasitic drag on the engine(I'm assuming that is powered from the crank)...I have designed a shroud made from aluminum that might work with it.

Why would a nitro blizzard need extra cooling?
