Here is a picture of my latest project. It was produced by KeilKraft in the UK during the mid 60's. Probably never made it across the 'pond.' It didn't do too well in contests and was no match for the Kwik Fli's and Taurus pattern ships. Something a little differnt though.

That is a beautiful model, windslore. I know very little about Keilkraft models. They had a FF design called the Senator which has recently become kind of popular here in the states.

You say it's not the best flyer. What seem to be it's design drawbacks, because it's a great looking plane.

Thanks raineday I'm not really too sure why it never did very well in the contest circuit, it may be because of the wing which was somewhat of a high aspect ratio design. It was a little before my time but I recall it had a tendancy to tip stall? I've only test flown mine a couple of times so far and not had a chance to really put it through its paces. I don't think any one of any note flew the aircraft in contests which is probably the real reason it never did that well! I'll prepare some more photo's to show the plan form of the design.

The rudder is too small to be effective. Also the rudder is too high above the wing, causing adverse roll (rolls opposite of the yaw input). Many of Sigs sport models that were touted by the unknowing as being pattern designs suffered from the same design flaws. A great sport model, but that's about it.

Look at a Bridi pattern ship from the Sixties/Seventies for the correct amount of rudder and the placement of its center of pressure.

Still, it is a nice looking model.

Thanks Artisan. I have to admit my knowledge of aerodyamics with regards pattern ships is sketchy! The phenomena you describe sounds like 'dutch roll,' I'll have to get my old aerodynamics notes out! I've incorporated dual aileron servos so that I can have differential aileron to counteract the adverse aileron yaw. It looks quite good in the air despite its inherent design flaws!
Thanks John

No, I think its adverse roll. Maybe an Iraqi roll?

Hi Sportpilot. The yaw I refer to is that caused by the induced drag (lift dependant drag) from the downgoing aileron resulting in yaw in the opposite direction to the roll. Does that make sense!

John,

Nice looking plane... reminds me of a Sig Komet.....one of Maxey Hester's designs. Still has that classic stance..... nice plane.

Dan,

I can see the likeness to the Sig Komet now you mention it. I'll try and post a picture of the plan sometime when I'm back in the uk. It was probably one of the first aircraft with a foam wing and turtle deck, certainly in the uk. Hope things going well for you. Do you have a web site?
Regards

John
