Dick,

I see that you frequent this forum often and I would be really pleased (along with many other forum members) if you could take a few minutes to tell us about your Tiporare design. It would be interesting to know when you designed it, how did the name come about (I’ve heard Type rare), what were your design considerations at the time, did you ever expect it to become so popular, etc. I believe it was the most popular pattern design of its time and possibly still is. I say that because so few pattern aircraft are sold now compared to the pre turn-around days.

I have a GP kit that I built and I love it. It is a time machine that takes me back to the days when pattern aircraft really ate up the sky. I know pattern isn’t flown that way any more but I don’t care, that’s the way I like to fly. Fast, smooth, and big!

Many years ago I spent a lot of time in Centerville, HO and watched Bill Keller at WK Hobbies build Tipo kits in the back of his shop.

Thanks,

Stuck in the 80s

The Tipo was simply a take off of Prettners' Curare.
My objective was to eliminate the "fancy" stuff - flaps - and simplify the plane
We learned a lot in the years we made em -from 1978 thru late 1990's .
It was, all in all a good time

I apologize for butting in here. But, I have always assumed that Curare is pronounced "kyer-ahr-ree" like the poisonous plant by the same name. So, I've also assumed that Tiporare is pronounced "tipo-rar-ee" in sublte reference to the Curare. Is this correct?

In the December 1976 issue of MANs, Hanno Prettner in the article refers to Curare as "Curare is a poison used by South American Indians on their arrows tips.". So Raineday, your correct.

The Tiporare is take off of the Curare, just as I thought it was.

I thought that might be the case. I've heard people pronounce it "kyur-air" and always felt that was incorrect.

Thanks for your response Dick.

Could you please elaborate a little more about the design, how did Bill get involved, did you do the plug, how did Great Planes play in the process, etc. Is rainedav correct about the name? Do you have any idea how many kits were sold?

I made the plug and named it and wrote the books
Bill made the first parts for a while - Dave Brown flew it competitively at first and that really helped promote it
Great Planes wanted to sell it and had others build it and paid me royalties on each one sold. I also built it in custom made setups -- partial and fully built -- for years
personally-we did many hundred including Tipo+ and the large ones called Hippo Tipo
Great Planes paid royalties on many hundred more - I really did not keep count .
I sold the original plugs I worked with years back -forgot to whom--
It was and is a good simple aerobatic model layout
with the larger control surfaces the last Tipo+ were full capable of flying all the maneuvers seen today
Last versions had thin clipped wings weighed under 7 lbs powered by OS91 four strokes -- fast as hell on 40% nitro-That was in the late 90's.
My new upcoming model bears no resemblence and is gasoline powered to be ZDZ40 FAI engine I have already done prototypes with current ZDZ40 RE
beats the dickens out of any glo /electric setup for sheer power .
Anyway No one will like it for about 5 years -

combine tipo from the Italian (means type of) plus rare and it flowed nicely.

Only if you put your rarey in a lorrie and attempt to tip him over the cliffs of Dover. (Hadn't heard the punch line to that shaggy dog story in years, or the song for that matter.)

Was that idea inspired by it being such a clean and fast machine!
