I went to the Bridi planes website where you can buy his kits, but it says that someone else is running it with no mention of Joe himself. Does anyone know if he's still with us, and does he still fly? I just read that Phil Kraft died back in April this year.

Update 2012

I just came across something on e-bay that was described as "coming from the collection of Joe Bridi" This caused me to start searching, and I came across this thread. I spoke to him last about 2002, I think. He was still flying, and using a Fut8ss "knobby". He said something at the time that makes me suspect that if he is still with us, he may be in failing health. Does anyone know more?

i talked to him a little over a year ago and he said that he had to quit driving due to vision problems and that he hadn't flown for the same reasons in quite a while.
he seemed like the same old courtious joe when i talked to him.
and i didn't get the impresion that i was bothering him at all by calling
he seemed fine with the fairly long conversation i had with him about some of his old designs and the times Dad and i flew with him back in the 70's

From the sounds of it, Joe will be attending the classic pattern meet in Southern California with a number of other hot shots including Tony Frackowiak, Chip Hyde and others.

I interviewed him in late 2006 about an article I was writing about SPA. The Dirty Birdy is a commly used plane in SPA circles...very popular, and I wanted to research the most commonly used models so readers would know. He was a little "tentative" at first, but once he realized I wasn't trying to sell him something, we had a very nice conversation about his models and his contribution to R/C and vintage pattern. He mentioned vision problems even back then, and that he wasn't flying.

A photo of him with his original Dirty Birdy was featured in the article which came out in the summer of 2007. I sent him a copy of the article, but didn't hear back from him...glad to hear he's still with us, and still active.

That is correct Joe is coming to Bakersfield for our event this weekend. We will be running the standard AMA classes and FAI along with Old School Masters. For that event we are flying from the 1983 FAI rule. That means we pick our own patterns from there list and it needs to add to 45 K. It looks like the weather will be perfect and we have about 50 entrants so far.

It is actually turning into a reunion of sorts with the folling guys showing up. Richard Verano, Rusty Van Baren, Bob Smith, Joe Bridi, Jim Kimbro, Tony Frak, and a bunch more. I was able to get a hold of and refinsh Jerry Boyce's original Circus Circus Patricia at the last minute. Kimbro unretired the Silloutte, Tony has a Phoenix 7, and Richard will be flying Joe's personal Escape. We will also have noon demos by one of the best Heli pilots in the world Kyle Dahl and then Gee Bee racing will kick off at 530 both tomorrow and Sat.

Anyone that would like to come up and hang out or even fly is welcome.

Below is the Patricia with OPS and it gets it.

Hey Chip, that Patricia looks like it would be stupid fast!
Wish we had something like this in the Mid-atlantic area.
