Hi Guys, I'm Larry, a member of SAC and a friend of CorsairJock, having flew with him at another event. Today was our Warbird Day and I can safely say, it wasn't all that great because of the rain. Jim, CorsairJock, was flying when the rain came and that was pretty well the end of that for the day. Jim was the only one who got a flight in. This year I volunteered to help our CD and brought two warbirds to fly before and after our event. I felt it wasn't quite fair to judge and fly at the same time. Sorry to say, I got one flight on my Zero before it rained and no flights on my FW 190. Anyway, in all the past years we have had a contest, nothing hard to do. But I did notice we had some of our club members who brought out warbirds but were afraid to fly in the contest. Doing away from contest would have gotten these fliers to fly. Please understand my position, I support the CD in whatever he wants to do and it's alot of work getting things ready, especially a contest, and trying to make sure things run smooth. Last thing he needs is rain like what happened today. We are going to try again tomorrow and this time, I'll be flying. We had enough help today and the guys say they'll be back tomorrow to help so they won't need me. That is how our club works, more helpers then needed and thats great. Now for contest, IF and I say IF it were up to me, I do away with any contest but that was not my call this year. Without a contest the guys who were afraid of flying today would have flown so that should be a good reason to do away from a contest. As for me, I could care less if I fly in a contest or not. I actually look forward to flying a contest tomorrow but if doing away from contest will get more fliers in the air then by all means, end of contest. Again I could care less one way or the another. Next year I like to CD our Warbird Day and try something different, maybe have an hour of open flying, then have a short contest just for whoever wants to give it a try, then open flying again or possibility no contest at all. Another thing I like to do is have a time limit on our event so other fliers can get a few flights in on their planes. I don't want to tie up our field all day, it's not fair to our other members who don't fly warbirds. Lets say we start at 10 AM, short contest between 11 AM and 12 PM, then open flying again till 3 PM. About our club, SAC. We have a great flying field with two long approaches, both NS and EW. No problems on landing or taking off from any direction. We have a paved EW runway for whoever wants to use it. We are the only club on this field, no two or more clubs sharing a field. But what I think sets us a part from other clubs in the area is our members. Our members will bust their butt helping each other and helping new fliers learn to fly. I've flown at several differnt fields in the Kankakee and South Chicago area where they stick their nose up at you because your not a member. We won't. We would like you to join our club and I'm sure you will if you ever come out to fly at our field but that is not neccessary. The main thing about joining our club is that your dues help pay to maintain our field so if you do like to fly with us often, it would be nice to have a say on how we do things. One thing that is required is that you be a AMA member. You won't have to join our club, you'll want to join after you meet our guys. That's how I got started with SAC, flying with some of the nicest and friendliest guys I know. Well, time to get my faithfull P 51 ready for tomorrow. I plan on blowing their doors off. lol Larry
