150 miles is usually a little too far for me to travel for a warbird event, but since there are 2 seperate ones in the same weekend I decided to pull our travel trailer to a nearby campground (Kankakee State Park) so that I could make it to 2 for the price of 1.

1st one is on Sat, Aug 26 (day of week misprinted on flyer), and is a contest/ judged type warbird event in the sw suburb of Tinley Park. Not my favorite type of warbird event (I prefer open flying type, with several warbirds in the air together), but I'll be there anyway.
Here is club flyer for the event and Yahoo map which will get you real close:
http://www.sac-rc.org/EventFlyers/WARBIRD%20Flyer%202005.pdf
http://maps.yahoo.com/maps_result?addr=Flossmoor+Rd+At+Central+Ave&csz=Tinley+Park%2C+IL+60477&country=us&new=1&name=SAC/%20Chicago%20AreaRC%20Site&qty=

2nd one is on Sunday, Aug. 27 in western suburb of Palos Hills, and the type of warbird event I prefer.
Here is club web-site (contact webmaster if the noise bothers you) and another Yahoo map:
http://www.palosrc.com/
http://maps.yahoo.com/maps_result?addr=107th+St+At+96th+Ave&csz=Palos+Hills%2C+IL+60465&country=us&new=1&name=Palos%20RC/%20Chicago%20Area&qty=

I'll be bringing my:
Top Flite F4U-1D Corsair with 3 wheel retracts, operational flaps, and bomb drops
Electric powered Hangar 9 F4U-1A Corsair with Jolly Rogers paint scheme
Hangar 9 Hellcat
40" span electric powered B-29

Anyone else here going to either or both of these events?

Hi Jim,I'll be going to the Palos Park war bird day and not to the S.A.C. club WB day.I don't like the contest end of it.
You will like the field and the people who put this together.I went last year and really had a great time. This is the field where I learned to fly RC. I think it was 1968 or 69.
Now I have never flown at the S.A.C. club field so I don't know about them. Both fields have hard run ways.So enjoy.Tom

'68 or '69? I was living in the Chicago area at that time, graduated from high school in Elmhurst, class of '69. Also went to LTHS (lived in LaGrange) during my sophomore year.
Anyway, glad to hear that you will be at the Palos Hills event. See you Sunday.
.............Jim

Since you are going to be at the Kankakee State Park over the weekend, you could go fly at the Kankakee Valley Model Flyers field on River Road, just East of the entrance to the Kankakee Community College campus. My Father is the president of the club there and they are having their annual club picnic/flying day on Sunday. Since you don't like competitions, they may be an alternative for you on Saturday.

I'll admit to an ulterior motive - I have a Top Flite Giant Corsair in the box and I would love to see the one you are bringing. I wanted to send this note offline, but I'm not to good at navigating the RCU website. My hotmail account is joseph_larson1@hotmail.com if you care to contact me for additional information.

HAVE FUN!!!

Actually, I've been to the Kankakee club web-site and sent off an e-mail several days ago concerning my desire to visit your club field on Friday, but have not recieved a reply. I sent off a 2nd one earlier today, still no reply. I'll e-mail you and see if we can establish communications.

Seems we have a sorta informal vote going here: it appears that many here prefer the open flying type warbird events over the fly one at a time/ being judged warbird events. I'll have to try a poll here when I get back

Hi Guys,
I'm Larry, a member of SAC and a friend of CorsairJock, having flew with him at another event. Today was our Warbird Day and I can safely say, it wasn't all that great because of the rain. Jim, CorsairJock, was flying when the rain came and that was pretty well the end of that for the day. Jim was the only one who got a flight in.
This year I volunteered to help our CD and brought two warbirds to fly before and after our event. I felt it wasn't quite fair to judge and fly at the same time. Sorry to say, I got one flight on my Zero before it rained and no flights on my FW 190. Anyway, in all the past years we have had a contest, nothing hard to do. But I did notice we had some of our club members who brought out warbirds but were afraid to fly in the contest. Doing away from contest would have gotten these fliers to fly.
Please understand my position, I support the CD in whatever he wants to do and it's alot of work getting things ready, especially a contest, and trying to make sure things run smooth. Last thing he needs is rain like what happened today. We are going to try again tomorrow and this time, I'll be flying. We had enough help today and the guys say they'll be back tomorrow to help so they won't need me. That is how our club works, more helpers then needed and thats great.
Now for contest, IF and I say IF it were up to me, I do away with any contest but that was not my call this year. Without a contest the guys who were afraid of flying today would have flown so that should be a good reason to do away from a contest. As for me, I could care less if I fly in a contest or not. I actually look forward to flying a contest tomorrow but if doing away from contest will get more fliers in the air then by all means, end of contest. Again I could care less one way or the another.
Next year I like to CD our Warbird Day and try something different, maybe have an hour of open flying, then have a short contest just for whoever wants to give it a try, then open flying again or possibility no contest at all. Another thing I like to do is have a time limit on our event so other fliers can get a few flights in on their planes. I don't want to tie up our field all day, it's not fair to our other members who don't fly warbirds. Lets say we start at 10 AM, short contest between 11 AM and 12 PM, then open flying again till 3 PM.
About our club, SAC. We have a great flying field with two long approaches, both NS and EW. No problems on landing or taking off from any direction. We have a paved EW runway for whoever wants to use it. We are the only club on this field, no two or more clubs sharing a field. But what I think sets us a part from other clubs in the area is our members. Our members will bust their butt helping each other and helping new fliers learn to fly. I've flown at several differnt fields in the Kankakee and South Chicago area where they stick their nose up at you because your not a member. We won't. We would like you to join our club and I'm sure you will if you ever come out to fly at our field but that is not neccessary. The main thing about joining our club is that your dues help pay to maintain our field so if you do like to fly with us often, it would be nice to have a say on how we do things. One thing that is required is that you be a AMA member. You won't have to join our club, you'll want to join after you meet our guys. That's how I got started with SAC, flying with some of the nicest and friendliest guys I know.
Well, time to get my faithfull P 51 ready for tomorrow. I plan on blowing their doors off. lol

Sunday morning, looks like it should be a good day. Morning showers turning to partly cloudy in the afternoon. Only rain on radar is in Kankakee, looks good up north.
Had a nice visit with CorsairJock at the State Park last night. Gave my dog a ride on my Harley to visit Jim and his wife and scare away the man eating raccons coming out of the dark at Jim's campsite. Killer weiner dog. lol
I and SAC welcome any fliers who like to come out to our field and try their skill and also remind that the Palos club is having their Warbird event today also. I have no idea what they have planned, I was planning on attending but because of yesterdays rain, we postponed our event to today so I'll be at our field.
Good flying to you today Jim, was nice to see you and the wife again. I'll let you know how I did and post some pics later tonight.

Hey Jim,
make it home yet?? Hope your day went better then mine. We flew two rounds and things went great first round, even made a timed landing right on the head of one minute exactly so it looked good. On the second round, I was setting up for another timed landing when someone from behind me yelled something out at me and I lost all concentration and down it came. Not much damage but I did bend a strut that will cost a little to replace. It did cost me a win so I hope the idiot is happy. He got second and I got third as it was. For prizes we received a certificate but we also had a raffle drawing for a slot machine and I was lucky enough to win that so all was not a total lost.
Wulf190, I had forgotten all about Palos and am sorry I didn't make it out to that event. We did finish up early and I did have my Zero still in the van. I was just a tad unset this member or ours pulled this stunt and I didn't feel like doing any more flying but I still should have came out and I'm sure you and CorsairJock would have changed my mind.
I did confront this guy and told him I didn't appreciate him yelling out at me while I was flying. I didn't know if I was in danger or what and like I said, I lost my concentration. I should have ignored him but you never know why someone is yelling, could be a problem behind me I wasn't aware of. I'm sure he didn't mean to distract me but he did. Oh well, done and over, now to recover my P 51 as I was contemplating on doing anyway because of all the little bumps and bruises over the years. I've had this plane for nearly twenty years and it is a great flier, Great Planes P 51 kit.

Hi Larry,
Got home late yesterday eveing, and decided to just get some wine, pizza, and a movie (DVD) and relax with my wife. That trip thru the I-80/ I-294 area will really wear you out. Backed up 2 miles, just for w frickin toll booth. Don't get me started on that one.

Never did meet up with any Kankakee RC people: I was supposed to meet 'Ken' at their field at 5PM Friday, but no-one was there. I waited for a bit (untill about 20 after) then left.

Very unfortunate weather on Saturday: rain started about 9:30 and lasted well into the afternoon. Better luck next year? Larry, if you're running it, AND it is scheduled again for the same weekend as the Palos Hills event: I WILL make plans to be there. I unfortunately did not have time to take any pics before the rain started. For that matter, I didn't even get a chance to look at all the planes and/ or talk to the pilots. A real shame, because there were some pretty good looking warbirds there, including but not limited to the B-25.

Despite the rain, my wife and I really enjoyed the extended weekend vacation/ camping trip. We made a couple of more friends at the campground after your visit (NICE Harley!): I'll refer to them as Rocky and his significant other. There were practically eating cheese and crackers out of our hands. They each had a raw egg also. Well behaved and mannered.

Moving on: the weather cleared on Sunday and was actually pretty good: altho mostly overcast it kept the sun off of us for most of the day, so temps and humidity levels were very comfortable. If there was a downside: it was windy at times, buy mostly straight down the runway. I DID take pics at this one, during the runway line-up show. I beleive I got a pic of every plane, but apologize if I missed any. Anyway: very good turnout at this one, and I think everyone enjoyed it.

4th pic on top is what is left of a very nice looking Zirolli(?) Hellcat. It appeared to me that the pilot was attempting a low pass, and went a little TOO low. Others reported that the crystal fell out to the reciever. Either way, this was a great looking, very nicely detailed and finished Hellcat.
5th pic (1st on bottom) is my Hangar 9 Hellcat with Saito .91 and Robart mechanical rotating retracts.

If anyone else has pictures of either of these events, PLEASE post them here.

1st 2 pics are my 2 Corsairs:
electric powered (AXI 4130/16) Hangar 9
Saito .82 powered Top Flite with 3 wheel retracts, dual Vortac bomb drops

My micro B-29 is also in the pics

5th pic is a Hangar 9 P-40. Note: he has a 3" spinner on it, and it looks OK with that size
6th is Tom's Hangar 9 giant scale P-47
7th is a giant scale Stuka, complete with dual sirens. The pilot of this really puts on a great show.
8th is a giant scale Skyraider. This plane performed some pretty good formation flying with a giant scale Corsair.
