RE: Can a full scale prop hang?
Yes they can and I have seen it airshows many times but...they can't hang too long because of the lack of air and full power overheats the air cooled engines. Nom

RE: Can a full scale prop hang?
Anyone have a video of Wayne Handley flying the Turbo Raven? It had a greater that one to one thrust ratio! He could hang on the prop, back down and then accelerate straight up!!! At Reno with about a 7,000' density altitude!!!!

I have seen him do that but the risk is tremendous, if he had a flameout in the turbine, not turbo, the Raven would revert to a crowbar and that is all she wrote. Turbos are attached to recip engines to force more air into the induction system, a turbine is a jet engine. Norm

RE: Can a full scale prop hang?
The airplane was commonly refered to as The Oracle Turbo Raven, and yes it was powered by a P&W PT-6 TurboProp (I have no idea about the 'dash'#).
From Wayne Handly's web site: [link=http://www.waynehandley.com/]HERE[/link]
The Oracle Turbo Raven, powered by a 750 HP Pratt & Whitney PT6A-25C, was the first airshow airplane to have a positive thrust-to-weight ratio. With a performance weight of 1,900 pounds and 2,800 pounds of thrust, the Turbo Raven could climb straight up, stop in the vertical line, and then accelerate straight up again.

The turbo raven was, to my knowledge, the only full scale plane able to sustain a hover. It weighed 1600lbs empty with 2800lbs of thrust. In 1999 he managed to crash it, blamed on a power failure. Although it had a PT6, he called it the turbo raven, kinda like the turbo commander.

Jim LeRoy does a good job "hanging" from the prop. His show routine is pretty exciting !!

IIRC, the designer of the Raven was quite upset about that deal. The plane was designed for 300-350hp and he publicly stated that he didn't support putting that much power on the plane. It was probably just a case of CYA. I saw the Raven at Oshkosh a few years ago - it was impressive.

I thought the "Turbo Raven" was actually a "Giles 750" ,,,,,,? Totally different from the Raven, which was built by Zivco (Edge).

Jurgis Kairys is the best there is with a Sukhoi. Perhaps that's why him and LeRoy often fly together.

Wow!!! Really puts you in your place (or at least me). I saw a Pitts with 400 ponys at the St. Pete air show that seemed like he hung on that composite prop all day. Also saw a Cap 232 at Lakeland that was mind blowing. I guess if aerodynamics gives you any crap just add power... like A LOT!!!

I had the pleasure of watching Kirby Chambliss do his routine in his edge at an airshow this year. Upon take off he pulled vertical (not much alt) and did a very slow harrier/hover. He also did a rolling harrier in his routine. Absolutley amazing piloting.

Thrust weight ratios > 1 for propeller aircraft became available in the fifties.
IMHO, the best example of this is the Lockheed XFV 1 experimental fighter pictured below.
I have always wondered what is was like to be a pilot of that aircraft, it must have been an awesome feeling to take off from a vertical postition lying on your back. I don't have a video, but would really like to see one.
