Rookie kit builder question here. I have the left wing all layed out and the ribs all pinned down ready for glue. If I use wood glue I am going to have to take the ribs back off and apply glue and lay them back down, if I use CA though I can just put some on where the rib and the spar meet and it will soak in and hopefully be good. Will thin ca be ok?

Thin CA has the best wicking (flowing into a joint) followed by Medium and then thick CA. This means that the two parts can be placed together and then CA flowed into the seams of the part and in most cases this provides an adiquate bond. Wood glues are a bit different and wicking is limited. Depends upon many factors including viscosity of the wood glue and moisture content of the wood. Having said that the 90 degree butt joints using wood less than 1/8" thick seems to work out fine. I use Tigtbond Origional for most of my glue joints unless construction dictates a better joint using CA or Epoxy.

I used to use CA but developed an intollerance to the fumes. Wood glues are much easier to work with and are much safer for all concerned.

Proper glue procedure would be to coat the two parts to be jointed with a thin layer of glue and then join them, this provides the strongest bond. This procedure is not always possible though. I thnk you should be fine using wood glue of a high quality to glue the ribs to other parts. If it is easy to remove the part, coat it with wood glue and then reasemble, thats what I would do. I used wood glues on my SSE and 3 years later it still flies.

Hi all,

I am writing for the first time on the forum but have been reading all the Sig Somethin Extra threads for a while. I am currently building one and to confirm what I see on the chat pages that these are lovely kits to put together. However, I would like some advice on covering the model. Here in England there is Profilm, Solartec or Solarfilm. Can anyone help on what the best covering would be and the easiest way to apply it to avoid make a complete dogs dinner of it.

I intend to spend alot of care on building it not to have the covering look like its been done by someone with feet for hands!!!!!!!!!!!!! GREAT

Many thanks and keep the good work with a great site.

I have a situation here, there is a gap about 1/4" between the fuse and the TE of the left wing. The wing is on straight, but that inside rib isnt on straight. It wouldnt bother me as much if this plane had wing bolts instead of rubber bands. I was going to install blind nuts but I forgot about it until after the wings were sheeted. How bad is this situation?

Here is what I did with mine. I installed a tapered rib and sanded as much of it off as I could the goal being to meet the entire inside rib flush with the side of the fuse. After that I used an adhesive backed foam from Michael's Craft Stores on the rib to act as a seal and cushion between the wing and fuse. Works great!

Hope this helps

Hey Chris

Also, I use a zip tie to attach the wings vs. a rubber band. The piece of mind knowing that's not going to break in awesome. There are many who fly with rubber bands and have no problems at all ... I went for the security of knowing that's not the weak point in the system.

Tower is about it. I shopped Balsa USA, Lonestar Balsa, and found that they require at least $25 and charge shipping on top of that. If you belong to the Tower Super Save Club and order 149 or more you don't have to pay shipping. But you have to pay for the Super Saver Club. You can get a $25 discount most months of they year that help justify the $149 order. If you don't order that much you can collect orders from your friend and make money. Tower has the lowest prices on balsa also that I have found to date. If there are lower places please post here and I will give it a try if they don't charge shipping.
