well i figured out the problem.........
ultracoat plus........ OMG is this stuf the worst?
my buddy is doing the work recovering the plane... so i go to the hobby store see green ultra coat and buy it........
i drop it at my buddys and he calls me and says it wont stick "plus" version is out of production but did I know there were two kinds???
helps to read the labels... lol.. but you figure if your gonna buy a product, its not been on the shelf for 15 years...... sooooo word to the wise unless you read you can NOT tell the diff on the outside from regular ultra coat(good strong easy to use) and ultra coat plus(which is a pressure sensitive sticky back thin weak type of stuff)

btw my buddy fought this stuff for three nights and got the plane covered!!!!!!!! but the seams would pull when heated so we ripped it off today and got reg ultra coat after figureing out what happened wow!! covering this big bird twice

Ok, I'll bite...I used white Ultracote "Plus" on my Cap 232. The lavender portion is original Ultracote. You can see it on my webpage under "Photos". It worked great for me. No problems whatsoever except that if you ever let the sticky side fold over onto itself, fugetaboutit ! It ain't coming apart.

Flyingblind, I have built two of the big Lazy Ace and only put ailerons on the lower wing; worked out okay. I powered the first one with a 1.20 4 stroke, a Quadra 41cc on the second. Both flew great. Both flew best with the incidence on the upper wing about 1.5 degrees less than the lower wing, a slight difference made a great difference in flying characteristics. I also put in about 5 degrees down thrust and 3 degrees right thrust.

Hi,

I've been keeping up with this thread hoping to find out the name of a cowl that fits my 76" Lazyace...

Maybe I should trace the firewall area and send it to Fiberglass specialities and ask if they have a cowl that fits this tracing...

Thanks

Larry

Hi,

I've talked to Fiberglass Specialities and they say that they do have a cowl for the Lazy Ace 76" ... they say it's a Travelaire Cowl with "lots of" louvers... for $40...

I don't know what a Travelaire cowl looks like and Fiberglass Specialities do not have any pictures... Does anyone have pictures of their Travelaire cowl...??? or a Travelaire cowl???

Thanks

Larry

I am still waiting for the balsa to show up for my 84" Lazy ace. I have a couple of questions for you guys if you don't mind. I posted my own thread, but not gettng any responses.

1. Where do I find a template, or even the dihedral angle for the bottom wing? I can't find it, maybe I'm stupid, but I figured it would be somewhere on the plans.

2. Do these planes use bulkheads? I have templates for the upper bulkheads.( turtledeck formers ) but don't quite get the instrux for making the fuse.

I got the plans from Chuck, and either I can't read his plans ( I'm not that great at building from plans anyway.... still working at it ) Or I'm missing a page and/or some templates.

Please let me know what page I can find the info on.

Thanks
Bob

bkyser - Bob:

On the Super Lazy Ace, 96" span, there are no bulkheads in the normal trace-from-pattern sense. Chuck has 1/4" x 1.5" (I'm guessing...maybe its thicker and wider pieces.... I'm not at home with the plans) pieces top and bottom, overlapped by the same material for the sides. Easier to do than describe but it makes a nice strong box. Think of 4 popsicle sticks glued to make a square frame. There is an alarmingly long expanse with no "bulkhead" at all in the wing area, but then the sides are very thick and heck it gives me a lot of room for equipment! It is all on the fuselage plan, at least on my 96" version, but there is no "template".

I used spruce stringers on the cockpit to tail top and it didn't add much weight. The balsa stringers felt to me that anyone restraining the model would crush them.....

I don't recall about dihedral angle. I think he just gives the inches to raise the tips when joining the halves, and you are on your own for a template again.

Hope this helps. e-mail if you need a hand.

-Mike
