Nogyro, What kind of covering have you got on your LA ? Did you paint the stripes ? Any changes to the struts ? Did you need to beef up the firewall ?

Victor 273,

The covering it Sig Koveral painted with their dope. All stripes are painted on. The inner cabane struts are stock, but we changed the outer struts, they are cut out of light ply. Just didn't want the hassel of soldering up wire braces. We also took out most of the dihedral in the wings, wish we would have left a bit more in. It has some adverse yaw to it. The firewall is 1/4" aircraft ply. I can't remember what the plans called for, been too long ago.

Victor I used lite ply and balsa for the N struts. This works great . I samwaged in some blind nuts and coveres the plane in monocoat. Wish I would have used a 1.2 glow instead of the heavy gasser. None the less, she is going to stay like she is untill I decide otherwise. What is your progress on your build? Nogyo, that is some fine looking LA. Nice work.

Thanks big al, I really enjoy taking it out in the evening during the summer and flying it like a LA should. I'll sit in a lawn chair and just buzz around and shoot touch and goes for an hour and a half. Use about a bucks worth of gas in the G-23. Someday I would like to put a cowl on it.

Ah man, now you're going to make me put floats on mine. I've always wanted to do that.

rhamil,

Can you give me some info on your float set up so if I ever do get around to it, I'll have an idea of what size and brand of floats to get. TIA

Big Al, I just came home with a "stack" of balsa. So will be precutting some 1/4strips for the fuse etc. Not going to be much progress as I've to becareful with my other piorities. Unfortunately some 9.5mm sheets for the tail had some bowing due to the heat in the car. I'll have to put some weight on them for a while. Hope this will straighten it out. Any advice ?

Hi Vic - spray the warped balsa with windex and shim up the warp about 1/8 "in the oposite direction. Let it dry like that overnight and it will be good and straight. The amonia in the windex allows the fibers in the wood to relax and reform. You can do the same thing with a warped wing. Speaking of wings are you going to use built up balsa or foam. Also are you goint to use the flat bottom air foil or a semisymetrical. I used the flat bottom and wished I would have used the astrohog's semisymetrical. Maybe I would not have the balooning effect I was telling you about on landings. Don't let me influence you though. The flat bottom flies great and has other advantages such as a lower landing speed and great lift. It is not very good for aerobotics though. I don't know your skill level. I prefer to fly like the name implies - Lazy ACE. Victor you are building which size? There is a 60"and a 76" that are real popular. The giant and super are much larger and I don't remember thier wing measurements. Keep us posted.

big al,

thanks for advice. I stacked warped sheets above my shelves( Shelves have slight sag ) in the study and placed some books on them. Ok now. Will remember the windex for other curves like making top hatch !

I've two foam wings (Flat bottom) made up for trainer 72 in ws . So I tot it would be easier to use them then making up a new set of build up wings. I'm building the wings last so still ok to change my mind on semi-sem. Do you have a section drawing for semi-sem ?

I'd prefer a lower landing speed and will not be going into too much aerobatics. I would use my Kyosho ARF Stearman 40 for aerobatics. I also fly the Limbo Dancer, Kwatz (Tailess) funflys for slow crazy stunts. I guess the 76" Lazy ace is just for "Lazy" relaxed flying.

I actually ordered a .56 2st (1.8hp/17000) engine for the LA, I am now considering changing the order to a .91 2st (2.2hp) I could always throttle down for slow flights. Just felt the .56 may struggle abit with a smaller prop. etc on take off an in a bit of wind. Whats your opinion ? My son adviced me to go for the .90. Would this make the landing speed a bit too fast ?

Ace's are aces on floats ! Lazy Ace's are a natural on floats, they fly just as good or better than off wheels. We're using G23's and G26's with SIG floats.
