Well today I finally got to fly it. It took off straight and only required a little down trim and that was it. It knife edges with no roll out at all. It did just about everything I could throw at it.

One thing i did do that was a mistake was I had way to much elevator travel. The first time I flew it i got it up and flew around some to get feel. Then i pulled full elevator and it snapped. I landed and cut down a lot of travel out. It does not take much to get it to get it do what you want it to. It rolled very quick even on low settings. It just don't look like much travel but it sure does work well.

So I am extremely happy with it so far. The engine pulled it nicely and had plenty of pulling power for vertical and hovers.

garygee-
here are the pics you asked for. Sorry it took so long to get them on.

What do you mean by a little extra work?

What steps are required in assembly that aren't found in a typical ARF?

well cutting out exit holes for control rods and pull pull wires. Trying to get them straight so you don't have a bind in it. The vertical tail fin is fiberglass and has to be sanded to fit flush and after the balsa piece was glued in for hinges.

Getting the engine mount to align with cowl took a bit to get the engine shaft to fit directly in middle o cowl opening. There is a bit of drilling to do on it also but thats usually a norm with some ARF's. It just took a bit of measuring to get exact holes to line up for landing gear, engine mount, and wing bolts.

It is really no big deal but just took a bit longer than other ARF's i have built before. I think I built my Diamond Dust faster than I did this ARF.

Thank you for the update on your flight it sounds like a winner,I'm pleased to hear that it flew great. When you say you had to much elevator travel, was your elevator set to the 3/8'' they have in the instructions or did you add more for your high/low settings? The pictures look great thanks again. ............maverick everything flooredCOBRA said in post 31 is true. Again its not your average arf but yellow does make one bad a#@ aircraft!

actually as funny as this may sound I did not use the recommended setting on elevator. I was being stubborn and figured I flown other planes and I can fly this one so I put the elevator as far as it would travel on high rate. And on low about half that.

Usually on all the other planes I have flown and built it really did not matter where the setting was at. Well on this type of plane it matters a lot! As I found out after I got the wheels off the ground.

Well hopefully the sun will come out today so I can get it in the air again. One thing though I need to practice is my hovering. I may have to set my balance again to make this easier. Guess I will see more I fly it.

Thank you. Now I need to know more information about the issue with the firewall separating. I was thinking about getting one of these and using a YS 140DZ but now I am having second thoughts.

Maverick,
These guys are talking about the 60 size Edge and I believe the one that had the firewall come off was also a 60 size Edge. You are (I hope) talking about the 120 size if you are going to put a YS 140 DZ on it.
I have a 120 size Yellow Edge sitting here waiting for me to asssemble. I am also using a YS 140 DZ on it. I just went and looked at the firewall and it looks good. I would recommend adding a little epoxy around the firewall joints just as a precautioin and pinning the firewall would be a real good strengthening precaution, but it looks good like it is.
This is my second 120 size Yellow ARF. I also have the Giles with the YS 140 DZ. I have 10 - 12 flights on the Giles now with no problems whatsoever.
You should always look things over good on ARF's and fix what looks like needs fixing, but overall I am very impressed with the quality of these Yellow Aircraft Arf's and would not hesitate recommending them to others.

IMHO, Jim

Absolutely! I didn't realise the firewall problem was with the 60 size.

I am trying to decide on the Yellow 120 Size Edge 540T or a Dave Patrick Ultimate with the YS 140 DZ.

Are you happy with the YS 140 DZ?

Is it a good match for the Yellow airframe?

I am happy with my DZ, although I am still trying different props to find one I like. The high pitch props (17x12, 17x10) are making my Giles come in fast on landings so I'm looking for a lower pitch prop to slow it down (will try 19x8, 20x7, or 20x8). It's been too cold lately to do much flying.
One good thing about putting the DZ on these Yellow Aircraft planes is that the Hyde ARI-A motor mount gave me the perfect dimension from the firewall to the spinner on my Giles with no mods. This Edge looks like it will work out that way also.

I have not noticed any weakness on my firewall yet. I did add some triangle stock all the way around on inside when I got it. I always add this just in case, you never know. On the outside of the engine mount it has triangle stock already so it should be okay.

Also I coated the complete firewall and firewall black with some 30 min epoxy. Mostly for fuel proof purposes, but sure it wont hurt having it on there for maybe a bit more strength with it.

I just got back from flying it again today and had a blast with it. One thing I did notice though it seems to need some throttle on the lands after I start to flare. If not it comes straight down in a flare and hits a bit hard. After a few tries I got the hang of it and was able to crawl it to a landing.

Another thing I noticed is that the pull0pull assembly need to be tightened back up again after a few flights. I got some slack in the lines, guess the lines stretched some since the first flight.

Overall very happy with it and the guys at the club love it and are on there way to buying some also.

I was wondering how visible the plane is in the air.
Does the pattern make it hard to see?

no not at all. It is very easy to see inverted or not. The colors are pretty bright especially with a good sunny day.

Here is a picture we took this weekend. There no sun at all and still can see the colors pretty well.

Here's a pic of the bottom of the wing on the 120 size. The first two inches or so of the wing leading edge is red. I think you can see it in the pic.
The stab is also yellow and blue stripes.
The bottom of the fuse is red.

I guess you've seen the top in the ads. It is also red, white, and blue like the 60 size but a little different than the 60 size.

The 120 size has a one piece wing. It does very nice spins and snaps. The O.S. 160 FX would be a very good engine choice.
Flight times will depend on your engine and tank size.

I sure did!

I flew it last weekend and today and going to go back out tomorrow.

It flies very smooth and takes very little inputs to get it to what you want it to do. I have my ailerons max on high rates and it does not take much throw to get it to roll. I was worried because by looking at it with eye it just don't look like it would work very well. Also my elevator had way way to much throw. It caused it to snap very quickly. The first thing i did when i took off for first time was get it up there and give pull the stick all the way back to see if it would snap or not. And it did. I landed and took off a lot of throw and is now working great.

Just set it as the book says and it should be okay. I figured flown many other planes before and never had a problem with to much throw. This plane is completely different and highly recommend setting by book especially for first flight. So I learned the hard headed way.

Also another thing I noticed it lands a bit different than other panes. Coming in slow and trying to flare out for landing kills speed very quickly and it will stall. Usually on other planes i flare pretty hard and adjust altitude with throttle. On this one the Edge it is a little different. It is just going to take some getting used to. I can land it very smooth now after a few bumpy landings. I finally got the hang of it on how it likes to land. Now I can start doing the pretty landings.

It hovers very nicely and has good control on each control surface. I been messing around with some hovers and it kind of reminds me of flying my Heli by the way it reacts in hover. It will do every maneuver in the book you can throw at it. It loves knife edge loops and blenders.
