It is quite easy, just insert a small strip of brass shim stock between the cells before you add the end caps and long theaded rods. Let the shim stock stick out far enough to solder the balancing leads to.

I have 123 cells 2300 ma i put them in 3&4 cell packs i have a 60 size eflight with 7 cells in searis and 16x10 prop i get 54 amps 1100 watts at prox 6400 rpm---with 17x10 i get 59 amps 1200 watts at 6500 rpm this all when plane in one place on ground.The plane flew great straight up harrires and so on aprox 8 min flying,i am goig to try same set up in parrallel dont know if exrta 1 lb will make much diferance im afraid it will take away 3d capability,amy body know how much amp differance in flight compared to ground?

Red: I've also been told that I can just hammer the buggers with amps and they'll eventually sort themselves out. My brief experience with them leans towards this philosophy. Tex.

I work for a small R&D firm. One of our specialties is electric traction. Your batteries get all of us very excited! They are quite literally the batteries I have been waiting my whole career for. My question: Are there any Li-ion supervisor chips that are tailored for use with A123 battery systems? I've done hours of research, & the voltage thresholds are always wrong. I can get them in 0.05V increments from 4.1V up to 4.35V, all too high considering my 3.6V final voltage. Today I start designing a circuit from scratch, but I thought I'd ask just in case someone knew of something.

PLEASE NOTE!!!! that Hobby City LiFePO4 cells are not A123Racing cells. They do not utilize our patented Nanophosphate technology and therefore have very different performance characteristics.

Make sure you know what you are purchasing. People have purchased cells similar (if not the same) and found when they received them that they were rated for a 2C (not 20C) discharge.

Is there a balancer that could potentially balance A123 and LiPo packs? I have not yet purchased a new generation of batteries for my truck, but if I ended up owning LiPo and A123 packs it would be nice to have a single device that would balance both. Say I got a balancer with just pins as a plug, without the plastic housing, so it would fit any balance tap with the right pin configuration. Would an Astroflight Blinky (regular, not A123 version) balance an A123 pack if it was fully charged? This would be to avoid tripping the Blinky's low voltage protection.

Yes the astro blinky makes them they are same except you need ywo because of differant voltages on batteries

Well, I would hope to not need two Blinky's. I'm wondering if the regular LiPo Blinky will balance A123 packs as long as they are fully charged so the voltage is not too low. Would the Blinky still think they were LiPo cells (just partially charged ones) and balance them normally?

You can check with them i have one off each and there set to turn off at differant voltages

The LiPo Blinkey will not balance A123 packs unless you overcharge them.
If the Lipo version ,which was developed / marketed first worked correctly with A123s then Asto Flight would not have made the A123 ones.

They need to incorporate a switch that will allow it to do both. But, why buy one, when you can get two for twice the price!

Thunder Power Smart Balancers work well for both LiPolys and A123. They balance LiPos to + /- 0.005 or 0.01 total extreme inbalance and balance A123 to within + /- 0.015 or 0.030 total inbalance.

I am unaware of any LiPoly balance which is better than 0.01 for a 2S-5S or 2S-10S pack.

My TP Smart balancers are closer than my Blinky,Vampower and ,Hyperion LBA6 .

They also balance closer than my FMA CellPro 4 , Balance pro HDand my DN Power chargers.

TP Smart balancers only balance A123 to within 0.03 due to the simple fact that they are two stage balancers and the normal fully charged 3.6 volts per cell of the A123s is not high enough to get them into their high precesion range. I have always felt that 0.30 is more than good enough for A123 cells.

Good info everydayflyer, thanks again. Do you have Thunder Power taps on your A123 packs, or do you use some sort of adapter?

By the way, it seems that the Hyperion LBA10 can do A123 as well.

Most of my A123 packs have PQ/Hyperion balancing leads on them.
yes I have many adapters for the TP Balancers. I had a Beta ver. of the TP 205 balancer before Thunder Power even had LiPolys with balancing leads on them.

I have heard that about the LBA10 and I had some input into its' firmware but never seen one in person.
