After looking around -I find no cells in two pack or loose 4 cells etc.. Local DeWalt wants $185 for the pack (10)
is anyone except 123 Racing selling em?
ther has got to be a better deal than 20 bucks a pop.

Has anyone used a large pack as I stated in my earlier post? I would like to buy the packs soon but I just wanna be sure on what I need to buy with them. Steve

There is only one balancer that I am aware of that can balance a 12S battery and that would be the Hyperion LBA 10 .You would need two of theses and their series harness.

Yes many are using 12 cell or more in series and many are using 2P and greater. There was a post on RC Groups of a pair of 6P8S packs which were going to be used as a 6P16S.

Most charging large packs are using Variable volts / amps power supplies such as ones capable of 0-50 V and 0-20A

I use the Hyperion LBA6 1-5S with my 3 and 4S A123 packs and it works great.
I also use my Thunder Power 210V Balancer which when in combo with my TP-1010C charger with Rev. 2.1A firmware provides me with indivual cell voltages.

The e-Station PB-6 Dual Link balancer can do 12S packs, 2 linked together. Many people over on helifreak.com use this setup with li-poly and A123. Also, the e-Station balancers support the Li-Fe technology while many do not because of the LVC and end voltage termination.

After speaking with some R/C guys from work, battery/ power systems designers from work, and the guys posting in the A123 support forum, i'm gonna go with the HiMaxx 6332-230 brushless/ Phoenix 85HV ESC, and i'm gonna try a 19x10E APC prop. A 12s2p LiIon A123 pack made by myself and i'll use one of the rectifiers from my work to charge the packs(1200w 39-56v@25A). I'm hopefully going with two e-station PB6 dual-link balancers to balance the packs. I got a GREAT price on the motor/esc/prop combo so I couldn't pass them up. I should fall in at around 9 min flight times based on some calcs we did and I should be looking at approx 115w per lb. I'm gonna build it and see what happens. Let me know what you think.

I'm kinda sick of all that rubbish about adapter and I wanted to decide which ones to use.

Buying DeWalt packs on e-bay for around $100, this gives you a $10/cell price - 8 cells = $80 for 4S2P pack.

DeWalt packs have 10 cells in series - take the four from each end, fold them over and you have two sticks side by side - no soldering between cell required. This leaves you with two individual cells with tabs - I have made up 4S packs with these using MEC power tube construction. Again no soldering required except the power and balancing leads.

what about us heli pilots?? when will these packs come in smaller version so helis can handle the weight??

im flying .30 .50 and .60 helis and i bet these babies will be a blast in rc heli hobby for sure

The A123 cells are already being used very successfully in electric heli's my friends are flying. For example they are using 4S1P in the Trex 450's and 10S1P in Swifts. They are a little heavier than the best lipo's but the heli's carry the weight quite nicely.

A 4S A123 weighs the same as a 3S4400 Lipo pack, about 11 oz. And you can probably will it to your grandchildren if the ones I've been flying are any indication. Seriously - 75 cycles and still going strong. Discharge on the order of 35 amps at full throttle.

Therein lies the problem. A123 does not offer a 4S pack. Most of us in aircraft are buying DeWalt drill packs and making our own, or having them made by a friend that has some experience in removing the cells and making up a pack with balancing connector (for FMA Cellpro). If you are at all handy with a soldering iron it is not nuclear science. You just have to be careful in removing the cell pack. Removing the screws is a bit tricky unless you have security bits available from Harbor Freight, even with them you have to be careful to get the right one to avoid stripping the screw heads. Others have simply cut the screws at the joint of the pack with a Dremel too.

Using the DeWalt salvaged cells you end up at about $40 per pack plus whatever the connectors cost.

2 cell A123's work great as RX packs. I tested one out rceently, no problems at all. I ran it directly through the switch with no regulator. I plan on 2 for my 32.5% Extra, replacing 5 cell NIMH packs.

Thanks and agree but since these aren't five cell, nickel metal packs, you got me curious. There hasn't been much discussion in using these as rx packs for airplanes in any of the A123 forums. It seems like they would work well but I am still a newbie when it comes to their batteries so thanks for the response. I use Futaba as well.

Hi Evan, hope that all is well with you.

I am also looking into those A123 for my Rx packs. Seems like a very good option to me and the only negative I can find is that the discharge curve is so flat, you can't get a feeling on how deep you are in the discharge with your loaded voltmeter (like you normally do on the Ni-Mh or Ni-Cad). Sounds like you'll have to trust the indication from the charger with the mAh that went in.

A 3S charged yesterday ,open voltage this morning 10.32V .Placed under a 0.5A (500 mA) load voltage 10.29. 10.29/3=3.43 volts per cell . 3.43*2=6.46 V for two cells.

That might be your problem. 3.43 * 2 is 6.86 in most places. [;)]

Is that too much for most rx's after a fresh charge? I fly Futaba and would hate to find out the wrong way. Nothing worse than thinking...yeah, I should have used a regulator. Thanks!

Brian, I may have missed this along the way but what is the size of 1 cell. I am looking to run these in an 18T, we currently run 7.2v 1400Mah pack 100mm x 28mm x 17mm tall. Can something be configured that is compairable in size???
