Hey Butch,

How did you get the shape of the B1 into the computer? 3D laser scanner of a model? Reinvented the wheel? What?

Ed

I started with a Drawing that was bad. I then bought a 1/48 scale model and sectioned it. That was off. The model ends up being shorter then the real plane. Then I came across a good drawing and compared the sections of the model to them. Stretched the plastic model sections till they line up with the good drawing I had. Scanned the sections ,brought them in to my CAD program, splined and skinned the model and made adjustments where need. This took me about 5 years. I was learning on the fly. After all that I went to Dyess AFB and took some dimensions off the full scale and came home to compare them. I was much closer than I expected. Then I was given a Rockwell drawings and compared them and found out I was just about on the money and went with what I had drawn. The drawing shows all the bulkheads, each one was drawn and re-drawn at least 25 times before it was what I wanted.
I have come to the conclusion that the more advanced our building techniques become the harder we make the project! It use to be "Aw that's close enough" Now that I have a computer it's " well we might as well make it right" which 99% of the people couldn't tell if it was right or not. So basiclly I reinvented the wheel smaller.

Does anyone know where Bob is getting his aluminum from? Does anyone know a good place to get aluminum sheets and tubes? I have been looking for a place to get wing tubes.

Just bolted together. Was told that welding it would warp it. The guy that told me that laughed at it's size, and said you don't have to worry it isn't coming apart !

I my defense ( I estimated weight) I thought all pieces were 1/2" thick, included the weight of the adjacent bulkheads, and didn't account for the lightening pattern. Make sure the bolts are strong enough. Two plates make a good imitation of shears for undersize/not enough bolts.

I know you just estimated the weight, no big deal. There are more bolts and there are some that hold everthing together that go through the bulkheads. IT'S NOT COMING APART ! I hope !
