What's Up TOM!!!!!!

Mr. Tom Cook quite possibly may be the nicest and most talented guy I've ever met. Superman 2006, minding my own business walking around looking at jets when he casually is just sitting there under a tent and says something like, "Pretty amazing stuff days." "Yes Sir" I replied. "I could tell you about some of them if you'd like." "Sure!" I replied. "Here, have a seat." so I sat in the chair next to him and he began to tell me about each one of the different models that were parked there on the tarmac just a few feet in front of us. Then we stood up and walked in between all of them as he pointed out different features and why they were designed the way they were. Finally, he showed me parts of the Dauntless he and his father were working on and explained the vision he had on how everything would look when it was completed and what features it would have. After what must have been about 20 minutes to a half hour of conversation, it was time for me to head back over to check on my batteries that were charging. I shook his hand and said, "Thank You for taking the time to explain all of that to me and good luck on your Dauntless project, it looks beautiful." "Sure, anytime." he said. I then began to walk away and said, "I'm sorry, what did you say your name was again?" "Tom Cook." As he smiled and waved goodbye. I said, "Thanks again." and walked off.

HELLO MR. COOK!

from Bryce Watson

Could you let me know how Bob got the data into the CNC machine to cut the foam parts? Did he trace sections of a model and scan the tracings into a computer CAD program? Did he do some kind of laser scan? Thanks much.

I did all the CAD and Machining work on the model. I had several different sources that I used ,plastic model, drawings, full scale measurement and others. Took all the info, started the CAD drawing and compared all info to what I was drawing. It took me about 5 years of messing with everything before I cut any foam. Hope this helps. Go to the start of this thread and it will show everything. Butch

All done in RHINO ! Wish I had Solidworks. But if it took me as long to learn I would never get finished.

I am working on rendering the A-6 in Solidworks right Butch and in my opinion it is much easier to use then Rhino. I tried Rhino for a while and it just didn't make too much sense to me but Solidworks is pretty straight forward. I dont think the learning curve would be very steep for someone with your experience.

He has the finger insured through Lords of London so getting a new shouldn't be a problem.

Come on Bob, if you still have the finger, stick it out there and let us see it

Bob deserves the break. I know what he has been able to accomplish in the last year from a personal point of view. I have been working on my 1/12th scale B-1B for over seven years. I began designing in 2001 and started cutting foam in 2002 and am still working a few hours a week to get it completed. Sometimes you need a break to solve problems. More often than not, life happens in the background. I originally started with seven design criteria milestones that had to be accomplished during the build. I have found over the years that you can get stumped on trying to solve a specific problem and you can't complete the next milestone until you have that problem solved. One thing I know for sure is, this is not a simple build. You have to get it right the first time in order to avoid trashing a lot of time and money.

I have watched this build from day one and am envious of the time Bob has put into this project. His dad has been a big help, also. If I could have had that kind of time back in '02, and my father was as talented has his, I would have had this BONE flying in short order. So, be patient, all. I am sure Bob will be back with as much gusto as in the past and get this B-1B project ready for the Spring. Who knows, I may have mine completed by then. It would be nice to get away from the Pacific NW winter and come to Texas for a flying event.

Roy

Nice work Roy.........

Thanks! I was hoping to get it ready to do some taxi testing towards the end of this last month. Hopefully this will be my big bird at the Whidbey events this next year. But had to make another trip out to Indiana for a family function. On the way back, stopped off in Minnesota for more family and then out to California for the last family visit of the year before coming home. Six weeks on the road definitely cuts into building time but having a chance to visit kids and grand kids is priceless when it comes to value. I would not trade any building time with the time I get to spend with all of our 32 grand children.

Roy
