Tom

Thanks for the invite! By the time March rolls around, we'll have had 90 days plus of snow, rain and no sun. I am getting too old for the cold and rain so I might just take you up on your offer.

Man.. after looking at that B1 over and over.. I'd sure love to build one (smaller of course) for EDF.. something maybe.. 90" length or so.

It would be Impossible to resist a B1-B Lancer sized for twin P-60, P-70 Class turbines. Just one on each side. That would be the Holy Grail..

Butch,
how big would a B1 be if it was setup for twin P-80's or twin P-120's? I'm assuming about 9 to 10 feet long?

It would be about 12' / 144" to have enough room for the turbines. 1/12 th scale is 142.66 long.

Unfortunately when you build a huge model like the B-1b it becomes very expensive if anyone wants to buy a kit, and the shipping alone will probably be $300 or so. BVM Jets are ridiculous enough especially for smaller models.

Are you serious? If you wanted a B-1 Model that was expensive ($50,000 as a guess),you would let the shipping cost stop you? You need to re-think before you post ! That is one of the most ridicules things I have read! It is like asking the fuel cost for a G5. If you can't afford the fuel you sure as h$ll can't afford the plane. I am amazed when some one complains about the price of something. If you think the models you buy are to expensive, build one form scratch yourself. Keep track of the time you have in it. Then multiply that by a hourly rate and see what you would want to charge someone. You would probably have about a quarter million dollars in it and then try to sell it. Then watch some dufess complains about you charging $2000. Sorry for the rant but sometime you have to stand up and say the king is naked ! BUTCH

Guy's it doen't matter ! If you want the info one of us will help. I didn't like the 12th scale because it made everthing tight and and a high wing loading, but that was just my opinion. When you build a model of a big plane it becomes a big model !

Butch is right. The B-1B is a big model and a big project. And there are a lot of pros and cons with this project. It all depends on what your personal requirements are. When I first considered starting my project in the late 1990's, a scratch built air frame with a wingspan of over ten feet was rare. Now the AMA has a list of them that covers six pages in their over 55lb .pdf file. For me it was only going to be a one of a kind project, so no additional molds were made. I did not have the CAD/CAM option for manufacturing, so I learned 2D and finally 3D CAD and hand cut/wire cut all the custom parts and pieces all from drawings. I opted to go with the 1/12th scale, even with the higher wing loading, because it would be smaller to transport with the vehicles I have. I was also interested in keeping it under the AMA’s 55 lb rule. So my B-1B breaks down into 3 fuselage pieces and 2 wings and will hopefully weigh less than 50 lbs dry. The scale was also amenable to the smaller 12 to 14 lb turbines, of which I already had two and my original plans was to put one engine in each of the nacelles. The 1/12th scale nacelles will only accept 90mm diameter turbines so that rules out a lot of the big bore turbines that are out there as well as carrying enough fuel to give a 6 min + flight. I also was able to use off the shelf parts and didn’t have to hunt for items that would satisfy this scale. On the other hand, especially in the 1/8th scale, it would be nice to crawl inside the fuselage to install parts and pieces which was seen on one of the videos (I am truly envious). Last but not least, is the cost. I am retired and living on a fixed income so the 1/12th scale was more in my ballpark, at the time. I am finding out that as my project has evolved (decided on going from 2 turbines to 4 turbines last year) the cost and the complexity have gone up considerably. But, I decided that if this was going to be a scale project, why not go with the full boat and get the engines I needed. Besides, 56 lbs of thrust was better than 28 lbs, no matter what the project finally weighed.

Bob has been a personal inspiration for me due to the fact that he has been so energetic at putting out the videos to teach us his method of scratch building. I have done more work on my project this year than any other year, because of his enthusiasm. But, no matter what the scale, this is a huge undertaking and there are no short cuts. GO BOB et all!!!!!! Keep those videos coming.

Roy

Thanks Paul. 2010 sounds like a good year for a model of the B-1B. Hopefully, at least one of us, or perhaps both, will have this magnificent bird flying.

Please continue. Us mere mortals that don't have the skills or the time to build such a superb model are enjoying the build, probably as much as you are!

I have enjoyed watching this thread over the past couple of months since I found it. I have learned a great deal about fiber glassing and how to make a mold. THANKS!!
You can’t tell some people anything sometimes and it’s just best to let it go and continue alone with your excellent work. I am sure that 99.999% of the people watching this thread don’t care about all that other stuff and just want to see this magnificent beast fly.
On a slightly different note, can you get me/us some information on the CNC router you used to make the wings and fuse? I apologize if it was mentioned before and I just missed it.
Keep up the good work and finger pointing!!
Scott

All-

This is an amazing thread showing the accomplishments of the some VERY skilled craftsmen.

That being said, please try and stay on topic. I've been asked to clean out some of the Off Topic dribble. If you want to discuss other builders, manufacturers, etc., please start a new thread, and keep it clean.

Why did you want to make the B-1b so huge, and why do you think a smaller one would have a higher wing loading? The smaller one would have proportionately lower weight, so the wing loading would be about the same or maybe even lower, unless I am missing something. Doesn't it all have to do with how light you can make it?

Were not going to add weight or shift weight. We made a glider and did a few test. It didn't seem to bother the flying with the wings forward or back. Remember in the model you don't have wet wings like real planes. The glider actually flew better with the wings back. We CG it with them forward and it flew fine but better with them back.

Pilotdude57. The weight does not grow proportionately with a model. A small model has all the things a big model has except volume. A model may get bigger but it doesn't add weight at the same rate. If someone can explain this better than me go a head.
