just read this thread....Bogart's tank was an M-3 "Lee" medium and the halftrack was an M-21. One of the last pics to use a full running Lee instead of a fiberglass mockup on a Sherman chassis.

there was an interesting movie put out in the mid 50s "The Iron Lady" "Die Eiserne Fräulein" about a light plane that went down in the Sahara. They found a "German" tank (M-24 Chafee) and got it running (yeah...right) with the planes battery and some gas and spent the movie running away from some Arabs that were trying to get back some loot the German crew had stolen during the war.

Anyone remember or know of this one, Id like to get a copy. OK Lots of Mickey Mouse and stuff that couldn't happen (outside of Hollywood) but nice to see an M-24 in such nice running shape.

I will agree about that Lee in "Sahara"....It looked like a Lee --it sounded like a Lee-- and the hatch clanged like a Lee's when it shut. Does anybody out there know what tanks they used in the Movie "Stalingrad"?? That, and "Cross of Iron" are two movies I'd very much like to see again.

--And don't forget "The Tanks Are Coming".....

(I didn't like "Red Dawn" at first ---except for the music by Basil Pouledouris (who also did the music for "Hunt for Red October" ). But as an "object lesson" to kids here about what it would be like to live/fight as a Mujihadeen, on their own turn, it isn't too bad..!)

P.C.

The M3 Lee in "1941", just so you know, wasn't a Fibre Glass mock-up on a Sherman chassie.
That was real Steele Plates, that was Welded together onto what had been an M7 Preist, granted, still a basic Sherman chassie.

"Cast a Giant Shadow" with Kirk Douglas has some tank battles with the Jews duking it out with the Arabs during the formation of the modern state of Israel.

Any body remember the TV series 'Combat'? The late Vic Morrow as Sgt. of an infantry squad in Europe. One of my favorite episodes envolved Morrow's character taking on a 'Panzer' (M48, I believe), single handed, to keep it away from a Duce & a half with a flat tire.

Ah, Hollywood!

One tank movie that I saw years ago is "The Beast" by Columbia Pictures. Ever since I saw it I've been dying to get it on tape but it wasn't available. Then a couple of years ago I checked on Amazon and it had FINALLY been released on DVD!

It stars George Dzundza, Jason Patric, Steven Bauer, and Stephen Baldwin, all as the Russian tank crew fighting the Mujahedeen in Afghanistan in 1981. After a tank assault on a village, the Russian tank crew gets lost in their T-62 and become hunted by the guerrillas.

The whole movie revolves around the tank and crew and their fight to stay alive, even though the Mujahedeen have very primative weapons. LOTS of tank operation, main gun, machine guns, bobbytraps, grenades, and ACTION!

It has always surprised me that not many people have even heard about this movie, but if you want a TOTALLY EXCELLENT TANK MOVIE, get this one ASAP!

(here I've been telling you about it; NOW I HAVE to take the DVD downstairs and watch it!!)

That Combat episode was called "The Dual" and it featured the M41 Walker Bulldog like in almost all of their shows. Another good one was called "The Hell Machine".

I have the movie video of "The tanks are Coming", 1951, starring Steve Cochran as a hard-ass tank sergeant that takes over a Sherman tank platoon. Good exterior and some interior shots of the sherman. Early in the picture they take on a "Panther" that really looks like it might be a US M-36 tank destroyer fitted with some extra side plates and painted German crosses. Near the end of the movie their platoon receives a new tank, an M26 Pershing.
Anyone out there remember a movie from years ago about a fighter plane that lands in the Sahara desert, can't take off for some reason that I can't recall now, and ends up being chased by a German tank? I think the pilot was Doug Mclure, the German tank commander was Loyd Bridges. Biggest gaff of the movies as I recall, was the German tank commander patting the side of this tank and calling it a "Panther!"

Only recently watched that "beast of war" about the russian t72 tank crew, found it a very good story and very harrowing at the same time, the drama keeps you gripped right to the end and the ending doesnt disappiont either, somes up the paraniod russian tank commander turning on his own crew in order to escape a group of rebels whosellage gets destroed by there tank at the beginning, the tank heads off into a deadend with the rebels armed with an rpg in tow.
great film VERY graphic tho
