Guys, I just managed to speed up the site considerably. Go to "My Account" scroll down to "see banner ads" and turn off banners.

Bill, good idea. I think you have to be a paying member? Mine won't let me turn off unless I "upgrade" my account.

DF, as you can see I only have basic membership but was able to turn off banners. So far it seems to have made a big difference. Still think there may be server problems though at their end.

Had a real nice run of Dauntless yesterday but video did not run. Another nice day here today so I'm off to the pond soon and hopefully have some new video to share.

Well here is some of todays outing. Again this is shot with Go Pro Hero so hands could be free so no zoom. Best to make full screen.

Some observations. She scrubs off a lot of speed in turns and she is a little bow heavy . I will move the batteries aft a little before next outing. I haven't added any other ballast to her.

Wow Bill,

The boat is running really nice!!! The yacht is very quiet, did you soundproof it?

BTW that is a really nice pond you are running on.

Also I LOVE this global warming thing!! I think I should get my speedboat prepped to run soon.

Bill,

Thanks for the tip on the Banner ads.  After turning them off I went to the bottom and clicked on "Click here when finished to see your public R/C Profile!".  When I came back to check they were still turned off.  I too am a "Basic Member".  We'll see if it makes any difference.

Rich, that is one of the two parks in New Canaan that I use. It is a lot bigger than it appears in the video since what you see in the background is an island. The earlier video was at ther other park and is larger yet. They are not all that far from your workplace. Get the boat out on the water! The only hard water now is in the freezer or adult beverage of choice.

I put the self adhesive sound deadening material on the bottom by the motors since they are mounted directly to the bottom. I also put it on the main cabin roof and floor. It helped a lot. The GoPro camera works great wth a headband as it see what I am seeing. To bad it looks so far away. Ideally you could do that with a regular video camera. Just impossible to video and operate a throttle and steering.

Bob, glad to help with the banner info. I still hav a problem now and then but MUCH better over all.

Bill

Hi Bill,
I’ll look up the park in New Caanan and I’ll see if it’s doable for me to come down for a lunchtime mission. I will keep you posted.
This morning I did a little work to Dauntless. I measured and cut the lower section aluminum wall for behind the seat. I also took the time to take measurements of the bridge deck back wall, aft cockpit back wall and the bow cockpit wall. These measurements are for the pleated leather seats that will be installed in those areas. The pleated seats will be made individually and glued tightly together to show the form of the seat.
After looking at a Dauntless photo with the pleated seat I was able to estimate and scale their size. Each seatback will be 1 ½” high and ½” wide.
I did bulk measurements today and drew them on a thin piece of wood. This will be the seat foundation for each piece that gets covered by the Tempur material and leather. Then they get glued to the wall.
I’m out of time today but here are some pics of the beginning process. There will be 42 individual pieces made for the exterior.
-Rich.

Rich the larger pond is Mill Pond and is maybe a mile north of the Merritt just off Rt123. The other is in Mead Park in downtown New Canaan.
Here they are on Google earth.  In the view of Mill Pond the road at the top right intersection is 123 where 106 intersects it (traffic light)

Continuing updating the lazarette to semi-scale proportions. I'm adding the starboard bench seat. Also adding the triangular sections that I believe were necessary to allow for the high positioning of the stern exhaust. I discovered these by studying the you-tube video of the final Dauntless walk-thru just before she was scrapped. Not sure if these were just steps or would have had cushions for seating? Rich can probably elaborate .

Thats a very good sign, DF, that you are moving from repair to modifying. Bet you will be back on the water before long.

Site is still having problems at times. I am pretty sure they have some server problems but they don't seem to have any way to report it.

Hi Bill,
The parks look great! Let’s coordinate and perhaps go sailing during my lunch break this week. This week Wednesday looks like the best day because it will be 55 degrees and sunny. Thursday will be 56 and cloudy and Friday is rain. I think I can have my V24 ready for a run. Let me know what works for you. I will send you a PM with details.
Hi Dauntlessfan,
The bench seats are looking good and I’m glad you are adding them. Your guess is good as mine & I don’t think there is a right or wrong answer on whether or not they were covered in fabric on Dauntless. It’s not uncommon for someone to step on a padded seat when boarding a small vessel. Also if you look carefully at the black and white picture posted a while back with Dauntless’s exhaust blasting off the stern, there was someone sitting on that bench seat. I’m not sure how good you can see it in that photo but my original it can be seen. (I will make it a point to rescan that photo.) So it is up to you whether or not to cover them with fabric. I may go ahead & do it anyway if I think I can get it to look decent.
Hi captains,
Last night I was able to continue a bit. This outlines the seat making process.
-Rich.

One note in the above photos, before I cut the Tempur material, I have a little process to ensure that it goes smoothly.
·         Use a Fine Tip Sharpie Marker
·          ¼” Wood Plank
First sit the material down on a flat surface and put the wood strip for the needed height beside the material. In this case a 1/4" basswood strip was used. Then take a marker and draw a line on all four sides. (A fine tip marker works best!)  Afterwards there is a ¼” border around the material. Then take an Xacto hobby saw and begin carefully cutting the material. Start in a corner and slowly work your way in. Be sure to keep the blade aligned with the line that is being cut. A hobby saw is a great tool for cutting a spongy type material.
Once the material is cut to the desired thickness then draw on additional measurements and cut out the pattern needed for the cushion or bed that is being made.
Most people are not going to use Tempur material so I recommend using a large SOFT sponge for a cushiony material. These sponges can be found in automotive supply stores or use any old soft cushiony material from around the house as a donor for the project.
-Rich.

Rich, Wednesday works for me. I PMd you back. Should I bring Dauntless or one of my others?  I suspect the Mill pond off 123 would be easiest and fastest for you with a lunch break.
We'll talk

Hi Bill,
Last night I tuned up the speedboat so it’s ready to go. It’s amazing how many things loosen up over time. I also charged and balanced the LIPO. I began balancing it at 9PM and it finally balanced at 8am this morning..Tonight I will top it off & it will be good to go. When I’m ready to buy LIPO’s for Dauntless I’m definitely going to opt for high quality matched cells. Balancing this LIPO takes way too long.
Definitely bring Dauntless, she will be the star of the show but bring the rescue tug just in case..The speedboat is a lousy rescue boat.

Charging up Dauntless at the moment. Think DF can make it from Texas on his lunch hour to join us? Yeah I usually bring the tug anyway just in case. The one time I didn't, well you know the story.

Ha! Dang I wish I could make it.

Getting ready to order new running hardware this evening.

Are the MACK struts for 2" props the correct ones to order?

I can't give an answer since mine already had Dumas hardware on it.  Maybe give them a call. They are good about advising.

We'll be sure to take some pix. Really to bad you are not in our area.

Spent about 45 minutes trying to get the site to load and let me upload a pic. Eventually gave up. I'm about ready to take my toys and find another sandbox .

When I tried to get on the site 10 miutes ago I go "site unavailable". This time it loaded right up quickly. Hopefully they corrected a problem.

Rich, seeing as how we will be running Dauntless I'll be in a blazer with yachting cap.       No way!

I am going to be a little embarassed though by the paint on the deck. Before we made plans I spent some time masking off the deck for repaintng. It has been black like the hull and I wanted to change it to light gray like I used on the cabin tops. Anyway I went to get matching paint yesterday and they were out. I figured I would then get medium gray since I wan't to paint while it was masked and thought I remembered there were 2 different grays used and also the color would be close. Well I sprayed it and it looked good at first but it turned to a bluish gray when set. The combo looks bad as you will see. So after todays sail it's back to masking and repainting.

Bill

addendum
Looks like it hasn't been fixed . took a while for this post to load.

Hopefully the things that they are doing to the site will greatly improve it later on!! Sometimes  technology upgrades come with a price of glitches until the updgrading is complete. They should however post sticky's to let the community know when the site will be down or disrupted so that we are informed. Simple communication makes the world of a difference. Last night I could not even post a simple reply on this site..

Hi Bill, I look forward to seeing you later today!! It will be fun to see you skipper the Dauntless! The paint job will be fine...It's in capable hands..

Hi captains,

I will be bringing a video camera with a tripod to the pond too so we should get some footage today. I will see if I can upload it to RCUniverse.

-Rich.
