i think i have an idea if i build a frame around the bottom of the windows it will make them stronger and use the mag idea buy inlaying tiny mags at the front and use the canopy att to the roof and the floor of bridge deck to hold it down what do you think

This sounds like a plan!!! This will be cool!!

Update guys:

Tonight I did the following: Widened an opening in the bulkhead between the engineroom and the owners cabin on port and stbd sides so that I can run wires back from the ESC's to the LIPOS and water tubes to and from the ESC's. This stuff will run along the side walls and will be hidden by the interior.

Next I epoxied both ESC brackets with ESC's to the side walls inside the engine room.

Then I cut off all the Astroflight connectors from the ESC's

Afterwards I put a 25AMP fuse in the new holder and wired between the ESC and the motor on the starboard side. Once that was done I was able to neatly push the fuse holder under the ESC bracket where it fits nice & snug. The wire coming from the fuse holder is the wire that connects to the motor terminal.

Finally, I crimped the wires and connectors and installed both pos & neg wires to the starboard motor. This motor is ready.

Progress is on the way!!

-Rich.

OK guys I need some help planning the receiver location.
I want to put it under the map table in the salon which is on the starboard side of the vessel.
I spoke to the guy at my local hobby shop and he had a good suggestion: His suggestion was to take a metal rod, wrap the antenna around it and shrink wrap it white and it will look like a tall VHF antenna.
I love the idea!
But then I told him that the cabin have to lift off which will be problematic because the receiver will be on the hull side under a wood box structure.
His answer was: run the antenna wire to a small plug on the hull that plugs into the cabin side where the antenna will continue up the rod.
Do you guys think this will work?
What would be your game plan for this?
Hey Bill, How did you wrap the antenna on the side of your boat?
-Rich.

Rich, I did not have a problem since I am running a 2.4 and the antenna on mine is for looks only. As for his idea it is a good one since that essentially is what a real antenna is.  On the real ones they needed a long wire for the right antenna length and on some merchant vessels they ran one back and forth between masts. This couldn't be done on a small vessels so what they did was wrap the wire around an insulated core and then coat it with another insulated coating. If you look at a real VHF boat antenna you will see it is not smooth because of the wire wrapping. They make antenna plugs, I believe it is Deans ,but you also could make a deck mount antenna which was also common. They usually had a folding mount for those on the real boats so they could lower the antenna while going under a bridge. It looked somewhat like a rod holder with a locking lever to hold it in an upright position. The antenna wire on yours would not be scale but There is no way around that. The only other solution is Deans makes a wire antenna that has a detachable connection I suppose you could paint it white to look more realistic.

Bill

here is what a deck mount looked like in folded position.

On the Dauntless I can put the antenna exactly where it was on the full sized boat beside the bridge shelter. I can skip sounting it on the deck and put it on the side of the cabin because I have full access inside the wall cavity thanks to the storage doors I installed there. I can possibly run the antenna wire inside the wall cavity, open the storage door and connect it to the extension  that goes to the outside antenna. I think this will work.

So I wonder, would I be able to utilize both antennas port and stbd if I rigged it accordingly with extra wire?

Hi captains,

Here is the port and starboard profile that show the antennas. Note the starboard side antenna is huge. I will likely just use that as the working antenna and make the other ones for show only. It looks like I will be making up some small brackets soon..They would be painted wood so that it doesn't cause interference.

Man the stbd antenna is soo big..I will measure it in the picture and put the length along the side of the boat to determine the scale length of it.

rich, I didn't wrap my dummy antenna but just left it smooth. To be scale the wrap would have to be thinner than a hair or possibly one strand of twisted finer guage wire. Actually notice there was a third antenna in those shots when Don owned her. The really large antenna was most likely UHF while the shorter was VHF and was probably while the change over was taking effect. UHF allowed up to 150 watts of power and with a big antenna like that could reach out over 100 miles. VHF is much less power and range.
BTW the real antenna were in 2 or more sections of decreasing diameter so for a dummy it is easy to use tube as the first section with the second slipping into it and being rod.

I have some short lengths in an assortment I got of different colors and sizes. All mine have lettering on them which would not do. I don't know if all shrink tube is like that.

Rich, I have been looking at Dauntless pix and when she had the open bridge and no radar tower there was only a small antenna mounted on the starboard deck forward by crews area!  and even in Rosies later shot there were no other antennas.

I'm going to look & am sure something will come up!!

I have the game plan now.I figured out exactly what to do....

I am not going to cut the receiver wire but rather install a 1/4" thick by 5-8" wood strip on the starboard side wall inside the main cabin

Then run the antena wire around that...This might help get some extra reception if the transmitter can transmit though the wall.. I don't want to coil it here just in case

The receiver wire will extend into part of the engine room side wall where there will be a small plug fixed to the wall .. The end of the receiver wire will be soldered to the plug on the hull side This will be a female side

Another plug (male side is on the cabin side simple slips into the female to make a connection.

The cabin side plug will be wired with purchased wire the same guage as the receiver wire a and will be inside the bridge deck storage cavity and will extend just outside the wall to yet another plug installed at the base of the (UHF) antenna. The UHF antenna will be coiled up and shrink wrapped with the purchased receiver wire coiled around the steel rod. The (UHF) antenna will slide through two brackets, one on top and one on the bottom which will secure it in place and make it easily removable for transporting. The UHV antenna plugs into the base bracket where it gets hooked into the the wire extension.

How does this sound?

Here I go again spending on this boat like a drunken sailor....

Rich is the resident expert on the subject. I can tell you that at that point she did not have the radar mast but rather a wood conventional mast with a crossarm.

Hi DeepSky,

Here is the only other photo here without the shelter top. Save it on your computer and zoom in on it to try to grab more details. also is a side profile drawing of Dauntless without the shelter top.

Bill is correct, when Dauntless didn't have the shelter top she had a simple mast like the one he described.

here are some pictures for you.

All of these photos are in the forum. If you want to search for pictures without digging in the pages scroll up to the top of this page and click on: Gallery. This will open up a box with every photo ever posted on this forum. I just used this feature to find these two photos.

Hopefully this will help you better navigate the site.

Hi captains,

I had a conversation with Bill on the phone after my last post on the antenna. After conversing with him we concluded that it is better to run the antenna to the radar mast as originally planned. Additionally I will not include the VHF and UHF antennas beside the bridge shelter because they were not on the vessel early on. These were likely added post rockefeller years which is not the era I am planning to model for historical purposes. . Additionally we concluded that it was more of a risk than anything to be plugging antennas into antennas as proposed for the UHF antenna.

Instead of focusing my energy on those antennas it will be focused on the radar mast instead.

Thanks Bill for keeping me a straight path!!

-Rich.

A couple of other things about the topless bridge. On the drawing it shows a venturi similar to the one in the forward cockpit and also a folding windshield. I don't know if she had the venturi as built but you can see the windshield in the pic.

Hi captains,

Update: The port side was fused and the ESC and motor was wired up late last night. Also the power distribution panel was fixed under the salon floor using some epoxy and the wires ran under the center of the engine room floorboard and into the owners cabin area where the wires will be made longer. The wires will connect to the LIPO  under the aft cockpit floor which will be a designated control area to turn the boat on-off and to monitor LIPO activity. The cockpit floor will be removable by removing the fishing chair.

The next order of business is wiring in the sound module. The module will be wired up to both motors so I have to go over somediagrams to see how that will work. I have a feeling that I may have to wire it in with the ESC's but I will see later...There is no way my wife will let me in the boat workshop now..

As always my honey-do lists are plenty so I won't be able to look at this until late tonight.

-Rich.
