my philosophy is if it's there...add it..

Tonight I will get to the rudders first...so hopefuly I wil have them hooked up...

Then off to the exhaust ports...those are also priority because I can't hook up plumbiing without them and they will give me some much needed high heat soldering practice before moving over to the radar mast....

Hey DF...that's a good tip because I usually make a mess of solder....reminds me...I will be starting on the radar mast pretty soon...hmmmm maybe tonight soon... It will be a hybrid between the one you made and Bills...It should be fun.

How tall and wide did you make your mast so I have an idea for an approach..

Can you post some pics of your mast?

Thanks bud..

-Rich.

Rich my mast (not including radar) is about 8" tall x 1 7/8" wide at the bottom. Thanks for giving me a reason to put my Dauntless back on the workbench by the way! I forgot I'd made more progress on my "RDU", not sure if I posted that earlier. Also you can see my gangster dude sizing a chrome ring to eventually put around the helm like Bill did.

Resistor values for your 3V and 6V lamps. Use R1 for the 3V lamps and R2 for the 6V lamps. One resistor for each lamp. If the 6V cabin lamps are too bright then use one of the optional resistors R3 for each of the lamps you want dimmer. The part numbers in the picture are from www.newark.com.

Dang I need to get with the program and build a shelter for my bridge deck.

I put one of my dusty neglected RC projects, an Aquacraft AirForce nitro air boat, on fleaBay tonight. Hoping to pull enough cash for new MACK prop struts and get her back on the water soon.

Hi captains,

Today I fitted the speaker to the sound module in the stern cavity. I had to cut away more of the keel to get the speaker to fit under the deck. Also I made up brackets out of mahogany that will hold the speaker in place. The speaker has to be completely installed before I can install the rudder servo. For the rudder servo the wood brackets were made and is ready for installation. Also the pushrods and hardware is all set and ready to go.

Ther other day after I tested the electronics I decided to get an idea how the LIPOS would work under the cabin. I found that the rudder servo would be in the way because I have underwater pick up tubes under the owner's cabin. So it turns out that the pick up tubes cannot stay there because of the LIPOS need to take up that area  so I have to remove the pick-ups to get ready for the LIPO trays..

Originally, the LIPOS were going inside the engineroom before the was a design change and now thast set ofpick up's are now affected. This is no biggie because those pick up tubes were going to be for show only to add water to the exhaust outlet. The working water cooling pickups were unnaffected by this.  I will just have to find another place to re-install the other pick-ups but will do it at a later time.  No biggie! But now, I need to design under the owners cabin to be both fireproof and a safe place for the LIPOS.

Much more stuff to come in the this area!!

Thank you Apismelifera! So in order to do this I have to set up one resistor for each light?

Can I rig one resistor just outside the box and have it feed all the lights in that bank? Would this work?

Please advise.

-Rich.

So in order to do this I have to set up one resistor for each light? That is what I recommend.

Can I rig one resistor just outside the box and have it feed all the lights in that bank? Would this work? Yes, see below.

- - - - - -

I like one resistor for each lamp because if any one lamp goes out it doesn't affect any of the others. That being said, of course you can put as many lights in parallel as you want and feed them with one resistor. Which lights? The 3V or 6V, both? and how many? Better to install the 6V lamps in pairs. Lamp A & B. Connect one lead of lamp A to plus 12V one lead of lamp B to minus and the remaining lead from A and B connect to each other. No resistor needed. You can do the same with the 3V lamps putting four of them in series. In series strings if any one lamp burns out then they all go dark. Which one died? This is one of the reasons I like one resistor for each lamp. You can also have odd numbers of lamps in your circuit.

Lets say for example you put six of the 6V lamps in parallel, and you want to run them off of one resistor. each lamp being 6V and .05amp ( 6V / 0.05Amp = 120 Ohms). the voltage stays the same because you're using all 6V lamps. The currents add because each lamp still needs 0.05amps of current. 0.05 * 6 = 0.3amps. Then you would need a resistor that is: 6V / 0.3A = 20 Ohms, and it would need to be 6V * 0.3 A = 1.8Watts. So now you have 6 Lamps in Parallel running off the one 20 Ohm resistor. Now the lamps resistance combined equals 20 ohms in series with the 20 Ohm resistor. Otherwise known as a voltage divider. When you power the circuit you'll be able to measure 6V across the lamp bank when running from a 12V battery. All is good till one of the lamps burns out. With only five lamps left the resistance of the lamp bank changes from 20 Ohms to 24 Ohms. Changing the voltage divider from 20 Ohm ( 6 lamps ) in series with a 20 Ohm ( resistor ). To one that is 24 Ohms ( 5 lamps ) in series with a 20 Ohm ( resistor ). Measuring across the lamp bank you'll now see a voltage of 6.54V. This will cause the remaining lamps to burn hotter and brighter and live shorter lives. The third reason I like one resistor for each lamp.

Hi John,

Thank you for taking the time for breaking this all down to me. Had it not been for your help it would have take me much longer to come up with a reasonable conclusion.

I think that at this point I am not going to run the Robbe decoders so I will return the units to Harbor and get my $300 back. Instead I will wire up on/ off switches to a panel in back of the boat and turn the lights on and off manually. The Robbe system is fine if everything was on the same voltage but because I have a diversity of voltages I decided that it is not worth it to me to spend the extra time needed to change up the wiring to make it right.

-Rich.

Hi Dauntlessfan,

The ship is now for sale!! I no longer have a way to transport it and I am also narrowing my interests in the hobby.

This weekend I am acquiring a Dumas Brooklyn Tug built by one of my club members. This will take the place of the ship. The Brooklyn tug comes RTR and is really nice. I have always wanted this tug & the full sized tug was in service on the Hudson River during the times when Dauntless was there serving the Rockefellers. .

If any of you are interested in the ship here are the details:

http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1279138&page=4

Also send me a PM for details.

I am also starting to clear out the rest of the stuff that I started hoarding when I started the hobby such as:

Unbuilt Billings Calypso
Unbuilt Dumas Osprey

Once Dauntless is up & running I will start unloading other stuff that I accumulated such as Astroflight 25's ETC.

For this hobby I will have 3 good running boats:

The Dauntless 'the star of my fleet'

The Dumas Brooklyn Tug- A good club boat that will be nice to run & will be my rescue boat

The V-24 speedboat

For me these three boats are perfect, A speedboat, a cruiser and a tugboat...This is all I need.

-Rich.

Helloooooo         Helloooooo           Helloooooo       Helloooooo       Hellooooooo

Quite an echo in here! Who turned off the lights?

Guess the owner is out tugging. Sky ran out of ideas and DF put his boat back on the garage shelf. Bob must still have to many other projects. As for me I'll be happily sailing Dauntless in Queens NY this Sunday with the Empire State club. I did some rewiring of the motor leads and added a second set of batteries in parallell to get more run time. I'll be taking a couple of other fleet members with me this weekend.

Bill

Hi Bill,
OOohh there is a Dauntless forum…rrright…yyyeeaaahhhhh
Just kiddin’ The Dauntless will always be my favorite gal!
I took a small break from Dauntless to gear up for the tugboat acquisition this coming weekend. With the tugboat I just ‘scratched the surface’ with some ‘Dauntless’ style research and shocked some in the tugboat community. Ooopps…Leave it to me to blow the lid off these boats.. I’m not going to go any further on that until Dauntless is done and settled..
On the tugboat for just a minute..I have an evil plan in place for that boat. I’m going in stealth and am going to quickly remove the small house behind the pilothouse and rework the back of the pilothouse instantaneously. Then I’m going to repaint the cabins in the ‘true’ color combination.  This will be done, quick, fast and in a hurry…It’s a tugboat so it shouldn’t be beautiful so I won’t fuss on the time to make it pretty... On a Dauntless related note I sent the Robbe decoder and module back to harbor for store credit..I decided to take an inventory for the tug and picked out everything I need at harbor to make it awesome within that budget.  I will use that credit to get the rest of what I want and add it to the tug. Then I will have a good working (accurate) tug that will be ready for the summer and onward. I think the Dauntless is all caught up as far as accessories go…She will be loaded beyond belief..
Back to Dauntless, The other night I actually ran some tests on the wiring..I found that the intercom wire that I bought is no good for wiring up the lights. Hydro was right when he said ‘all wires are not created equal!’ I then tried servo type wire and I was able to get the forecastle lights on during a test. The spring idea does work with the servo wire but it has been difficult for me to adjust the springs to touch the brass contacts when I put the cabins on the hull. I have more adjustments to do to get this to work properly but I have been tinkering with it.
On Saturday I plan on finishing the installation of the speaker in the transom and get the rudders hooked up. Then I need to make up a switch panel for all the light switches and continue on the wiring. Also in the short term I need to measure and draw up the seats aft along with the side step seating so I know how much room I need to make a removable panel in the aft cockpit floor. The fishing chair will be attached to the floor board and underneath the floorboard will be the LIPO connections, LIPO Alarms, light switches and radar switch panel.
All coming soon enough..
I look forward in sailing with you this weekend…I noticed at their pond it takes some bending to put a boat in the water. For heavy boats like the Dauntless & the tug I can predict throwing out a back somewhere in the process…So I saw one guy take two car belts and used them to put under the hull and lower the boat into the water with ease…when he would take out the boat he would do the opposite...easy..Then this gave me a better idea…I went to Target and picked up two 26” Schwinn bicycle tubes and will use those to lower the boats in the water..This is also similar to how those big hoists lift boats in and out of the water..I figured that this can save our backs some grief.
I will also bring a camera and video camera to the pond. Oh..I may do another onboard video of your Dauntless..The last one didn’t turn out good so I want to do a retake aboard your yacht. This one might be taken from the helm looking forward..
-Rich
