Instead of me using aluminum on top of the epoxy lip I might just shape a piece of aluminum or wood as a spacer for the back wall and fill the entire cavity like a swimming pool in epoxy. Then I just have to remove the temporary wall when it is done, lightly sand it and paint it. Then I never have to worry about something happening to the bowlip because the entire structure is made opf solid aluminum.

-Rich.

Perhaps someone will find some inspiration in this and put it to work. Just make the entire bowlip from a block of epoxy and shape it....done. It is easy and will be indistructible.

-Rich.

Rich I can't find the photo right now but I believe DF did a screen grab from the video on the beach that showed the bow lip area with the bow light etc. In that pic the area under the covering at the front of the lip was not solid.
I made my bow lip by first making a paper template and then cutting a piece of styrene , bending it to the curve of the bow and Ca ing it to the deck. Then I Ca'd a cover piece for the very front. Remember the lip had chocks cut into it for the anchor rhode.

Rich,

I was just looking at the photos and reading the text back on page 19.  The bow lip is merely a continuation of the bow curvature and I noticed it seemed fairly thick, maybe 1/8"?  I also noticed dropped of relatively sharply (after the chocks) and wonder of if should be a little more gradual?    The idea of making the entire addition of solid epoxy sounds great and a lot simpler than building it out of wood/plywood ,etc.

Bob

Hi Bill & Bob,
These discussions are great because they challenge me to come up with solutions.
Bob: Just after the chock the lip must drop fairly sharp in order to be correct. The difference between mine & the original is that the chocks were present on the other side of the aluminum whereas I buried them in epoxy. The info with the chocks present was not available at the time. I will not re-modify them because the external appearance is good and it added strength to the overall structure.
I would not use styrene and if I had to do it again but rather I would go epoxy. My bowlip is nearly indestructible. I do not ever have to worry about it getting ruined because of a mishap because it is that strong! If another model boat was to cross mine while underway their boat would get POUNDED and my bowlip should easily withstand it.
You do have a good point about the inside of the lip being hollow. Fair enough. Here is a proposal. IHow about making a thin rectangle box that will be at the end of the bow just where the chocks begin where the lip platform ends. It will go abeam to the other side. Then drill a few holes behind it as grab holes on the deck. Then backfill the rest of the bow and over the top of the rectangle box by 1/8”. By doing this you can still see a little bit under the platform to be satisfied with the detail and still have the strength of having a solid epoxy platform and bow lip. I think this will last the life of the boat.
To make the initial bowlip that extends past the deck use painters tape to get the height and look and then fill it with epoxy. When the tape is removed the epoxy will look perfect and the shape will be there.
What do you all think?

-Rich.

you're doing a great job at keeping me on the straight and narrow... I do think that the above suggestion is great for someone that doesn't care to capture every detail in it's entirety.

After seeing that it reminds me that my bow is one thin aluminum plate away from having that detail completed.

-Rich.

DS,

Fabulous!  Just simply fabulous.  You've done a really nice job on the hull; the bow is nicely shapped.  There's still a lot of sanding ahead butwhat a nice base!

Great ideas on the bow details fellas.

I went to start my truck this morning and quickly realized the AC had quit. We're right in the middle of a 100+ degree heatwave, so you guys can probably guess what I'll be working on tonight instead of the boat .

UGG..About a year or so ago my wife had to work in Dallas so I went down there to check it out. . Every day was over 100 degrees and it was brutal. I feel for you for having to deal with that heat. The AC is a must over there.

DS,

Looks good to me BUT "wheres the chocks"?  Go back to page 95 to get some inspiration fromRich and if you want 'scale'  also check out the picture on page 19 of the bowlip of the "original" Dauntless.

Hi Deepsky,
If you go back to page 8 about the 12th post down, you will see how I treated the raised bow and the chocks. I hope this helps.

In  this shot you can see the profile of the bow lip on the real Dauntless and the one I added to mine long after it was built.

If you are running the boat on 7.2V's then yes it would work. If the boat will be running on 12V then you have to first look up the specs of the ESC to see if it will support it.
