hi captains i started fitting the canopy top and found out that my radar mast was too short  so i got to thinking now is a good time to make the forward stand for the radar mast .i know what the shape looks like i dont know how long or wide it should be can any one give me an idea

Too short no, too tall yes. This is a point when it is good to veer away from Dumas's plans and follow us if you want accuracy. Dumas has you putting that mast high up in the clouds where it doesn't belong. At different points of time  Bill, DF and I tackled the mast. I took a break from the mast at a mid way point to focus on the electrical work but Bill finished his.

Here are a couple pictures of my mast from discussions that took place in the in the 120-130 page range.  Note Herc is 4.25" tall. Unfortunately I won't have access to my boat for the next couple of days but perhaps someone else will chime in with info.

-Rich.

Hi Captains,

Yesterday Offshore Electrics delivered some of my watercooling goodies so this weekend the waterjackets will be installed on the Astroflight 25's. When I do that I am going to remove the 4 giant underwater scoops along with the Mercedes pumps. I don't think I ever posted pictures of the scoops but just as well because they won't be missed. On Sunday I am going to introduce the boat to Bill and the boat club for what is supposed to be the final club run of the season. I am expecting the first pair of new pumps to arrive any day now & the 2nd pair should be sometime next week.

DS - Here are some reference lines drawn for the radar mast to hopefully show the height of the unit as it was on Big D.

Highest blue line is the plain where the actual radar unit was mounted.

Below that is the mast platform. Circled in red is the wind speed meter placed forward on that platform. If you want to add this detail, make sure it'll fit.

Next down is a roofline reference, then below that is the main deck line.

This weekend I abandoned the incorrect forward cockpit 'place holder' I've had on my Dauntless, and modeled the yacht's actual seating area.

How cool it must have been to sit in this spot while underway! Pics of my progress to follow.

Hey Dauntlessfan,

Funny you posted that I just installed the seat over the weekend.

The other night I did some work on the Dauntless to get it ready for a club run on Sunday. The large underwater were removed and some of the furniture that I have been hoarding was installed inside the boat. On Sunday it was very windy but I still ran the boat for the handful of guys that made it to the pond. We had a few sailboats in the water that were getting blown over because of the hectic wind gusts. The Dauntless on the otherhand proved to be awesome because of the independant throttles and power. I had complete control over the boat.

With the scoops removed the boat ran even better than before! Everyone that seen the boat was impressed with it.

Hi Rich - last time I took mine out it was exceptionally windy like that. I left the canvas roof piece on shore because I thought maybe the wind might catch it and blow it off .

Okay so here's pics of the conversion of my forward cockpit. Was much easier than I thought because I just repurposed the existing piece I made long ago from balsa and had already fiberglassed it for strength and waterproofing...

And lastly I added seat cushions to match the rest of the boat. Now it's ready for final paint. Easy peazy!

Rich, I hope all is good with you and yours with Sandy beating up the place. Being in the Boston area for the "festivities" wasn't a picnic so I can just imagine how much rougher it was further south. The hotel the wife and I are staying in has taken some roof and internal water damage due to high winds and heavy rain but, compared to what we've seen on TV, it's minor compared to what's been happening in NY and NJ

Rich and Bill,

I hope and pray you and your families are all in good health with the passing of Sandy over the New York and New Jersey area's.  It has been devastating for everyone in your area and I know it could be several days before we hear from you.  None the less, you and all of the modelers in the area plus all the other residents are in our prayers for a fast recovery from the terrible hurricane.

God Bless,

Bob

Thanks captains,

I made it through ok. I lost power at my home and have no idea when it will be restored. We are located on the side of a hill and the storm slammed the otherside and literally went over our property. The sound of the wind and seeing the clouds flying overhead was insane!! It sounded like a horror movie but luckily no damage.

Many of my friends and family were not as lucky because they live so close to the ocean.

-Rich.

Rich,

Thankful you and family are O.K. and hope the extended family and friends will be o.k. overall too.

Deep,

Paint makes a big difference; she's really looking good.  Like the pinnacle and throttle controls on your control console.

Bob

DS I need a good pair of ESCs too. Must haves for me are 30+ amp rating, 12 volt input and reverse. This is my short list:

Tio (Mtroniks) Marine 30 - 30 amps continuous, 6-12v input, $56.95
Viper (Mtroniks) Marine 40 - 40 amps continuous, 6-12v input, $63.95
Astroflight 208D - 35 amps continuous, 6-18v input, $96.25
Ace BLC-60 Water Cooled - 60 amps continuous, 6-18 input, $104.99

Deep Sky - maybe if you use two EVX-2's but probaby not good to use just one. The owner's manual and website states it's rated for two 550 or 540 motors, or a single 700-size motor in the Summit. Now if I go online I can find forums where dual 700-sized motors are used with the EVX-2 for RC trucks sucessfully. Trucks have different power and cooling needs than the Dauntless. So I don't think it's worth the expense/risk.

Also, remember the original EVX is what I just tried in my Dauntless. It ran very very hot, and my two 700's destroyed my Traxxas EVX on the third run. Yes the EVX specs are a little lower than EVX-2, but still a very similar speed control so I wouldn't recommend it. Best to just get two ESCs that can easily handle the boat's big motors and breathe easy at the pond. Just my opinion .

Yes I think they'd work fine if you buy two and use one for each motor. Heck you could go all the way up to 16 volts with the EVX-2 .
