It's funny how people buy these kits, get started and then throw in the towel...I wonder how many kits were sold over the last few decades that ended up never being built?

Here is an update of my own...

So I bought that sound module a while back and hooked it up. There was a piercing feedback sound that came from it to later find that it was defective. So now I finally got around to sending it back to Canada for servicing...The thing is this...Even after it gets serviced I don't know If I want it in the boat....I got used to driving the boat without the sound on and don't miss it...She sounds good enough with the 2 Astro 25's and I might just be happy without the module.

I'll still have to see but as of now the novelty of the sound effects wore off & I don't care to put it back in. The boat is now laid up until I make a decision. Soon enough I want to get back to work on the lighting system. I would like to have it all work by Christmas if possible. This is another 'we'll see' because each time I try to work on the boat, I have been getting derailed by other commitments...There is still not a day that doesn't go by that I don't fiend for working on it...This boat has me wrapped and I long for the day when I finally complete it...

Rich - I gotta agree that the sound of the motors is pleasing and realistic by itself. And at full speed, my hull resonates a really cool, low-frequency growl that makes me smile every time. But... it'd also be cool to be able to "blow the horn" at the park when cruising leisurely past onlookers.

What else do you have to do for lighting?

Hi DF,

For lighting I have to wire up the hull side to get the lights to work. After lots of consideration the lights will be manual and the switches will be under the lazarette floor for easy access. There will be a panel with 4-5 switches that control the lights. The panel will be on the wood box that I began using for the ballast near the transom. There will be wires going from each switch to a corresponding bulkhead that contacts with the cabin contacts. There will also be wires that run straight to the pwr dst panel for power.

When I put those lights in I am also planning on installing on/off switches for the three LIPOS. This way I don't have to remove the entire cabins at the pond to turn the boat on or off. The LIPOS can be installed at home and removed at home. This will make life a bit easier at the pond.

So I know exactly how to do it but finding the time has been a huge issue.

-Rich.

Every holiday I say I'm going to deck out the boat in mini Christmas lights, take it to the pond after dark, and get some great photos. Once again it didn't happen (since I am still saving up to replace a smoked speed control). So my daughter helped me light up the boat at the kitchen table. And these super-micro LED lights show more promise than anything I've found in the past...

Very nice Dauntlessfan!!!! I love your boat!!!!

I actually got a pass this weekend...mainly becausemy wife took her entourage to the inlaws for the weekend...Needlessly to say I worked on Dauntless... I made up the brackets for the 4 waterpumps and started the installation process. They look good. Now I need to order 4 more (Y) connectors so that the water will split in different directions...I know I ordered them but they are missing in action....While I was at it I also worked on the owners cabin...It took a few beatings over time from lifiting the cabins on & off at the pond so the weak door supports kept fracturing. So to fix this once & for all I made them very strong by epoxying 1/8" wood strips on both sides of the top of the walls for support. Now the top of the wall structure is 3/8" thick making it super strong to last well into the future. In addition I epoxied more of the joints on the owners cabin wall structure for strength.

Finally, I ordered very small earth magnets that will be used throughout the cabin structure to secure it in place. I am also going to find a way to magnetize the owners cabin so that it sticks to the cabins when they are removed from the hull. My hope is by keeping them together it will help from damage.

I took pics and will post them shortly...

-Rich.

McMaster-Carr has those y's as well as lots of stuff we can use in model boats.

As for the sound system, if you get one that works properly, with a good speaker system and a way to let the sound out you will be quite amazed with how it enahnces your model boat. I have sound systems in three of my boats and I like them.

Hi Tom,

Hopefully when I get my module back from model sounds it will sound good. The full sized Dauntless had three storage compartments along the cockpit wall in the transom so I need to recreate the doors so that they open up. When I do this the sound will be let out because the speaker is right there.

Here are the pictures I tried to post last night. Note the (Y) connectors on the hoses. They will be hooked up to the 4 double sea scoops. Once they feed into each pump the water will blast out through a tube connected to another (Y) connector where they circulate water throughout the boat and finally out the exhaust pipes.

Also is the work done to the owners cabin as described in an earlier post.

-Rich.

Hey Rich,

Wow! I am impressed that you were able to stretch those silicone water jackets over an Astroflight motor!

They look great on there too.

All those water pumps and main engines running are going to make some interesting sounds of their own. I would love to hear it in person when you are running this big beautiful boat!

Hi Tom,

I'm glad that these water jackets worked out for these motors. These happen to be the largest size water jackets I could find. They are 800 sized jackets and they fit beautifully over the motors if you know anyone that is looking for something to cover this motor. A while back I saw an old post of yours on watercooling and saw that you used these jackets on a different motor. With this said you inspired me to find these jackets as a solution for these motors.

I agree all those motors running together should sound cool. I'm planning on making and placing wood covers over the four pumps to keep the noise levels down. This along with them being below deck should sound nice without being intrusive. Even the Astro's only have a scale rumble because that they are locked away in the engineroom.

If you are ever in the New York area I would be happy to have you over for a run.  Until then i'll be sure to continue to post pics and videos of this yacht.

Yesterday I went to a local petstore and found the (Y) water connectors in the fish tank section. I am now ready to finish up the plumbing. Once that is done all I have to do is wire it up to a servo controlled switch. The switch will have all four motors plus the engineroom fans wired to it. It will all be a pretty heavy load so it will be used sparingly to flush the heat away from the engineroom and the electronics as needed. I may just go ahead and add one more LIPO to the mix just for the cooling system. If I do this, this would bring the yachts operating capacity to 20,000 MAH.

I'm putting all this effort into the cooling system not only to cool down the electronics but also as an attempt to recreate the below pictures of the late great big 'D'...I think recreating Dauntless's unique cooling system will look cool and be notable otherwise I wouldn't bother. I am as excited as anyone for  the water jets to converge in the exhaust chamber before it blows out the boat. Hopefully it will look cool.

-Rich.

Captains,

Got busy with other things and almost forgot to post pics about the props, lock tight and jam nuts.  Wouldn't be much fun if I didn't do this.

Captains,

While trying to find the "sweet spot" for the motor mounts to permanently glue them in place I ran into a couple of unexpected problems.  The first was after 'tuning' in' the port motor I noticed a couple of cracks in the motor mount.  I had also tried 'tuning' the port mount, which has "other" problems, and looking at that mount noticed similar cracks (see pics).

The other problem I ran into was the starboard mount, actually the way the starboard motor shaft/stuffing tube had been installed.  Although both mounts are physically the same, in one picture you can see the forward end of the starboard mount is WAY up in the air yet the universal is still way out of alignment.  Looking further aft I could see there is a decided mismatch between where the two shaft/stuffing tubes exit the hull, the port shaft/stuffing tube exits further aft than the starboard.  I had previously noticed they were not parallel but the props seem to line up equally at the rudder.  I'm sure one of them is pointing off a few degrees to the port.  It's really kind of a mess here.  I don't know if I should remove them and reinstall the shaft/stuffing tubes or leave them as they are and simply adjust the motor mounts to compensate for the misalignment?  Your thoughts on this would be much appreciated.

Bob
