Bob, not really sure what to advise. The best bet would be to change shaft and that could open a whole can of worms. You probably would have to remount the strut also and a lot of filling etc.. You could just go with store bought motor mounts like Sky suggests and there are some places stateside that sell them also such as Offshore Electric. I pefer to use manufactured mounts with bigger motors If you go that route look for ones that will accept cooling coils if you decide to add them later. Graupner mounts will not. The only question would be if the boat will perform well with the mismatch in drive angles. I don't believe mine are perfectly matched as to angle to the centerline of the keel but I don't notice any effect from that. If you go with just mounts be sure to still do away with as much offset as possible in the couplers. Those 700's at speed can cause the "ears" on the couplers to fly apart. (experience)

Hi Bob,

For the motor mounts lightly sand them and give them a heavy coat of epoxy and see if that helps. Once you have the motor mounts taken care of run the boat and see how it behaves with the stuffing tubes like that. My guess would be that the boat might run a little off balance but will barely be noticable. The only way to know for sure is run the boat first and see what happens. If the boat was very light you would probably notice the misalignment but with the boat being heavy it may be more forgiving and less obvious. This is just a guess but we will know more once you run it.

-Rich.

Deep,

Thanks for your input.  I've looked at those mounts and wonder if there's enough room for cooling coils to go around the motor and, I agree, waiting 12+ days for delivery is no fun.  I've ordered from England before too.

Bill,

I looked at the motor mounts offered by Offshore Electronics and the 'best' one has been discontinued - bummer.  The one they are using for a substitute would probably work but I sort of miss the idea of the ventilation holes the older model had, like the one from England.

Rick,

I didn't sit around after this problem, well I did think about it for a while, but I went a step further than more epoxy; I put two layers of light weight fiberglass plus three coats of epoxy on the mounts then sanded the fronts smooth.  I used a sanding drum on my Dremel and evened up the back as best I could.
On the starboard mount I cut off the lip from the front then, using a 12" sanding disk mounted on my ShopSmith I sanded the bottom of the mount to make the front thinner than the back by roughly one halfI'll add some pictures later

Bob

Captains,

Here are the pics of the "re-conditioned" motor mounts.  I have not discounted buying aluminum mounts but I want to see how these will work out.  I believe the prloblem was the "O-ring" I tried to put in front of the motor, it caused uneven stresses and thus the cracks.  It sounded like a good idea but didn't play out in practice.  Four mounting screws would have probably eliminated most of the stresses BUT these motors don't have four mounting screws!   So no more O-rings.

So here's the pics including where I also took off the 'lip' from the front of the starboard mount and slimmed down the thickness of the base.

Almost forgot, I started with a pic of the starboard mount showing the extreme bend in the universal plus you can see the back of the mount is up in the air quite a bit so one thing I decided to do was cut that lip off, as I said earlier.

Bob

P.S.  The drive shafts you see in one of the pictures are the 'old' shafts, still laying on the side of the workbench, shame on me.

Deep,

Nice pics.  I think you're right, looks like more than enough room for a cooling coil under the motor.  Thanks for the picture, worth a thousand words as they say.

Currently I run it through the owners cabin hatch and then loop it through a hole that is drilled on the back of the mast platform. This spot will eventually be where the light pole will go. At some point I am going to drill a hole on the deck and have a plastic straw come through the deck. This is where I will feed the antenna wire and then it will clip onto the light pole.

I hope this helps.

-Rich.

Also keep in mind the antenna Bill accurately replicated as a possibility. This one would be good to make the actual receiver antenna. That's how I currently plan to 'hide' mine... (photo credit to Bill of course!)

Well you will never see mine in a photo. The beauty of 2.4 is that you don't need to have a long antenna outside. The rcvr on my Dauntless only has short whisker antenna and it is inside by the deck. You just have to be sure it is above the waterline. None of my fleet of 7 boats have an outside antenna and the range is as far as I care to control a boat.
On that note the farther away you run a boat the more likely you are to get a plastic bag, limb or other floating debris in your prop cause you just can't see them.

Bill is right, with a 2.4 system there is no need for running the wire anywhere because it will penetrate through the boat. At this point you can add the radar mast and the other antennas to be just for show.

It might be challenging for me to  get the same benefit on 2.4 because most of the my boat structure is sheeted in aluminum..

Hi Deepsky.... As long as the pond isn't frozen you are in business!! I sailed my boats with snow on the ground.

By chance, are you located near these folks? If so you will have a good crew to sail with...

OK captains...stop messing around.....there is a pair of Astroflight Super Ferrite 25's on e-Bay right now with a starting bid of $50 each. These are brand new old stock. (NOS)...they don't make these beautiful power houses anymore which I believe was one of astroflights biggest mistake..

Each one is being sold seperately but they are the same seller...Here is your chance.... take a hammer to your piggy bank and win these!!!

They don't come up for sale very often...trust me...And (NOS) never...

Man those are the Rolls Royce of Dauntless boat motors for sure. Good find and thanks for letting us know. I'll keep an eye and bid if the price stays within my reach.

Also Rich check out this 1:16 scale figure. True to the Dauntless era and actually 1:16 scale. Pricy but maybe worth it to your museum-quality build?

Very Very NICE!! I wish there were more figures in 1:16 scale that work for Dauntless...it's very difficult to find men in suits or in leisure clothing in this scale..This is why I settled for 1:18 scale...a bunch of short people runnin' around...
