Thanks Kmot, I'm a sucker for those WWII era troop motivators .

Welcome kokaneezer! 60 is the new 30 so you have no excuse to start this fun and rewarding build .

The kit does come with instructions - I have a an electronic copy in Microsoft Word and it's 7 pages... The plans are also very helpful - printed large enough that all pieces can be identified by a letter and number (ex. A-1, A-2, A-3). There are several views and cutaways of the boat on the plans. If you've framed up an RC plane's wings and fuselage, you can build this kit. It's more of an exercise in patience as parts sometimes need a little sanding or reshaping to fit right etc.

For me planking the hull was the part I was most worried about doing correctly. But really it wasn't bad. I did cheat in a few of the more tricky areas here and use thick balsa planks since they bend and sand easier. Then I protected those areas with many extra layers of fiberglass.

We are definitely here to help. No stupid questions, we all love talking Dauntless as you'll see.

You may have noticed DeepSky has built TWO in record time. Others like me and have had a workable ship for a while but now it's all about the details (much of which Rich404 has tirelessly researched and generously shared here over the last few years).

Speaking of details/realism - If that's one of your goals, correcting a lot of the Dumas oversights of the real Dauntless are most easily corrected in the initial build stages. So studying these forum pages before assembling the cabin structures can save lots of time and effort in that aspect.

Thanks to all for the welcome. My Dauntless kit is in transit. As I live in rural America (pop200) I will be ordering most stuff online. We have a restaurant, a gas station and a hardware store, none of which sell hi tech boat accessories. I would appreciate input on adhesives and materiel for this fiberglassing procedure. I am also curious about the hardware needed to get prop shafts through the hull. I know I would have more terminology and questions if I had the kit, but as order and transit time will slow me down, I would like to have some stuff ready as to not always be waiting on an order. Who do most of you recommend as a supply house? As of now all I have are X-acto knives and pins. It has been 20 years since I was modeling last. Of course it was balsa and mono-cote. I really appreciate the attitudes I see on this site and it is mainly due to finding it that I decided to undertake this monumental excursion into the unknown. That and a boat wont crash as easily when my reflexes wont respond as quickly as they used to.
Steve

Steve,

Welcome aboard!  Slow crashes is one of the big reasons I came to boating also; 35 - 40 years ago I did a lot of flying and building R/C planes but that was then and this is now.  The thought sort of thrills me the the reality would scare me to death - especially the $$$.

Bob

P.S. I'm 67.  Not old by any means, just maturing.

Thanks bill! I did a photo shoot in the other location today which is nearby. I will go for a photoshoot in the location that you posted tomorrow. Its so wacky that the coordinates are different.
I also went to salt river marina for pics to. More to add but out of time for today.

Rich, don't know if this will help visually but.........here are some captures. The coordinates that google earth show at the bottom of the screen are general for the area. When viewing an exact position the coordinates will follow your mouse pointer. I got the ones I gave with the pointer at the board to the transom where it touched the shore..
I went to the club meeting Friday. Was a good session and even Gary was pleased!

Ok very good...i will be back there in the morning...tonight i might meet up with a former owner...this morning i went to that spot and went into the water..i was next to a sunken sailboat...lots of gods pics and the tender & Lifeboat was in the water...also got video..it was very muddy and hard to walk. This is not a god place for a great commuter to sit for years...i must say that this place is amazing though...My primary laptop doesnt connect online here so i cant post pics or video yet..just ipad which is not cool for what i need it for..also verizon doesnt work here so no phone for me..

Rich
This area seems like a sacred spot for dauntless fans..

OK Rich, here is a little more info for you. In this grab the distance from the edge of the road to Dauntless is 31.95 feet. Looking at the time frame and coordinates it is possible there has been some erosion over the years and the shoreline may have receeded.  (reminds me of the old trick played on new sailors. " go bring me a 100 feet of shoreline" )

I used to send them out for "waterline".  Had a fist class send a recruit out for a bucket of steam and got doused with water; the seamen simply said the steam had condensed.

Rich I don't know how much free time you have or what the shops there are like, but just figured maybe if there's a little antique store or used boat parts business there, maybe it'd be worth looking over for something salvaged off the yacht before it was scrapped? I know there wasn't much left at that time but maybe a navigation light or something. Don't want you to drive your family crazy with your search but thought I'd throw that out there. Enjoy your trip and thanks for your relentless efforts to keep this beautiful boat's soul alive and well!

Thanks dauntlessfan, i.ll look into it...i went back to sugar bay and salt river. I used bills gps cordinates...needless to say google earth and tomtard disagree on coordinates. Google earth was sending me far into the island. It is probably a national security thing...not my business...anyway i had brought my laptop for insurance and was able to find the exact spot and take duplicate pictures with the boat not there.I also took lots of video and pics. Finally took some small rocks from that spot. The area was trecherous to say the least. I didnt go into the water becase there is a big drop off at the end of the road...the place where i went into the water yesterday was likely the place where they went to get to the dauntless. Yesterday i took lots of pics there and am happy with that. Also i broke a flip flop in the water because i sank in mud..it would be best to swim to the spot but i wouldnt be able to take pics anyway. In addition who knows what is underwater that once supported dauntless. It would not be good for feet.

I cannot wait to get back to mainland and use my laptop to post pics and write properly..

Updates to come..

Rich

This kind of exciting!  You have to call to mind the video of the Dauntless made while being salvaged and all the pics we had online at the time but you can imagine, in some small, way Rich walking around the area where Dauntless once lay.  Good reporting Rich!  Thanks

Bob

Remarkable work Deep! In breakneck speed no less! I like the grab rails you put on the roof over the main cabin, kinda like Bill's. Classy, classy, classy ! I'm still anxiously awaiting your sea trials as I am going to buy the same ESCs you have if they pass your quality assurance testing .

Also keep checking in waiting for updates from Rich's voyage to the island.......

Not sure of Rich's travel plans but he might just have to stay on the island. Poor guy!   We are in the starting phase of a major snow storm with upwards of a foot forecasted.

Bill

Edited to add: Talked with Rich and he got home last night. He has a lot to share!
