Deep,

That should be large enough to get her up on step after checking everything out.  Have you got a name for her yet?

BTW, I probably missed it, are you using Lipo, NiMH or SLA batteries?

Bob

Ahoy Captains
My Dauntless has arrived, epoxy purchased and will cut building board tonight. I have perused most of this site, but not all. I am systematically reading page by page now, taking notes and indexing on 3X5 cards. I am up to page 31 out of 160. I would like to get running hardware so I am not slowed in the future. I hope someone can help me find : (1) struts for inside and outside of hull (2) lengthof of drive shaft stuffing boxes and where to get same (3)same for rudder stuffing boxes (4)rudders (5)Astro 25 water cooled motors and 308D speed control, and info on the little u-joints I see connecting motors to shafts (6) batteries both for motors and accessories (7) water cooling piping and uptake nozzles and whatever else I may need. I promise I will inventory rest of this site but I cannot find these items. The one item I did find was an electric distribution panel at harbormodels. I am under the impression that I could do better than to purchase hdwe kit #2332 from Dumas. I intend to build a first class ship and dont want to retrofit the better quality hardware later. All your builds are top notch, I hope to be worthy of your company. Thanks in advance for your input.
Steve

Steve,

Order items 1, 2, 3 & 4 from MACK Products.  Give Rich a call there, he MAY have them for you all in a kit ready to go.  He was recently wiped out by Hurricane Sandy but has a lot of inventory available.  He is the best place for these items.

Deep,

I'm starting cheep with SLA batteries, mainly because I've already got them.  They should give me a good idea of how the boat will run.

Bob- thanks so much for the cue. This is why I chose the Dauntless after discovering this site. Really looking forward to this build. I am marveling with mouth agape at the detail Rich 404 is putting into his. Years and years. I appreciate all of you sharing histories and details!

Deep - SLA stands for sealed lead acid. These are the heavy black rectangular box batteries you find in power backup devices, kid's motorized ride-on toys, etc. Some aren't designed for the rapid discharge that your 700-size motors will require, and I've read that using them this way shortens their life. There are a few out there that are labeled as high discharge rate, but I've never tried them. SLAs are all I've ever used because they're cheap and I have a bunch on hand already. I have yet to have any problems, but most of my experience using them is with the smaller 550 sized motors that had a low amp draw. I plan to switch over to NiMH, just need the cashola .

Steve - Harbor Models has a good onine catalog of running hardware, hard to find details etc.

I first used SLAs in my Dauntless to save money. Big mistake. Running the Grauptner 700BBs they appeared to go dead quite quickly. In fact they did not go dead but recovered after sitting for a while. I tried both the 7.5 and 5 ah size with same results. I went instead to 12v nimh with much better results. I found a good price on 12v 4200 mah ones on the bays so bought 4 and now run 2 in parallel per motor with good run time. Wish i hadn't spent the money on the sla s as they now just sit here and I do use them with test leads to test new motors. I haven't actually timed the running time but know it is definately much longer. The Youtube Rich did of my boat on LI Sound shows how quickly the sla ones appeared to die. After that video was shot Rich ran the boat and after one pass we had to bring the boat in.

So I just got back from St. Croix last night…It’s challenging transitioning from a tropical climate and straight into a North East Blizzard. Back to reality…My stay at St. Croix was fabulous. We spent 10 days there. Toward the end of my stay I was able to meet with a wonderful couple that owned and lived on the Dauntless for many years. It was truly great meeting them.  It was great hearing all firsthand stories about this yacht. In the few hours we were together much information was conveyed about the Dauntless. We went over technical details and history about the yacht. I will be updating the history of the yacht to clear up any inconsistancies from her early years.

Deepsky-Your yacht is looking fantastic man!! Congrats on a great job! I love the fact that you are using the blue canopies; it is a great tribute to the Marshall years!

Kokaneezer- Welcome aboard!!! You have come to the right place for the Dauntless! Recently I set up another forum on the Dauntless on another site. That one is basically the condensed version of this forum.  The RCUniverse forum is more established and there is more activity here but the one on RCGroups has the thick of the information in a few pages vs over 150 here. Here is that link:   http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1796983

I can’t wait to see more of your build here.

-Rich.

For the Astro's wait for our Rich

The Astroflight motors I have in my boat are the Super Ferrite 25's. These motors are no longer in production which is a shame. These motors are power houses and are excellent motors. They are considered the ideal motor for the Dauntless. They are powerful, smooth  and very quiet.  Astroflight replaced the Super Ferrite 25's with Cobalt 25's which can be bought today. The drawback is that they are over $400 each but this is becomming the norm for high end motors these days.. I'm not sure if these are worth the price of admission because they are smaller than the S/F motors. I have not seen them run in a heavy scale boat so I have no comparison. For all I know they could be awesome.

If you want the S/F motors set your e-bay settings to notify you when someone posts them for auction. Every so often they do come up for sale. Another way is to do regular searches in the classifieds in RCUniverse and RCGroups. They come up once in a while here to. These motors are high quality so it's not uncommon for them to be pricey but they are still a bargain compared to new Cobalts. I purchased mine brand new when they were still in production. I absolutely love these motors in the Dauntless!

OK captains, it's picture day...there is a lot to report here.

First things first. Both my captain and engineer had a great trip to St. Croix. They rode around Sugar Bay in the Dumas tender and the Grumman dingy that I am close to completing. This was about 100' from where Dauntless sat for years. I didn't get to sail in Dauntless's footprint because it was in a bad spot. I would have to swim there and wouldn't be able to take these pics. The bottom was very muddy and I was sinking in it just taking these pics.

During my meeting with former owners the tender came up. It turns out that it was  flattened during the Hurricane Hugo storm and is no longer around. I also found out that the owner before them made a mistake on the name, it was not made by Grumman after all. There seems to have been two tenders on her over the years. The first one is unknown but the second one that we have partially seen in various pictures turned out to be a 1954 12' Alumacraft. So back to the drawing board. An Alumacraft will be built. I saw the brochure and have the specs. A special thank you to the former owners for this info!

So here are the pics of Sugar Bay.

-Rich.

Ok...here is another view of a sunken sailboat, some souvenier rocks, one will be kept onboard Dauntless and one huge hive of sorts. I thought of Apismelifera when I saw it so this one's for you buddy!

The pic of the bushes only is looking toward where the Dauntless sat.

Here we are folks...the Salt River Marina.

Boat one reminds me so much of the Dumas Lord Nelson Tug...This boat is so darned cute... I also took some other good detailed shots in the event that one lands on my lap. Then off to a photo shoot of the captain and the tenders at the end of the marina. This was done because when the Dauntless was refloated by Jon he docked it here for a moment and took a couple pictures. So it was natural that I would do the same.

Also are some pictures of some sunken wrecks. These were obviously high end yachts at one time..There is something to be said about them.

Rich these are great, thanks for posting them. What an experience that must have been. I guess it's a little more understandable how Dauntless could have sat degrading so long, with all those other once-proud vessels abandoned and half sunk in the same area. Suprising they haven't been removed after all this time, at least for the sake of tourism?

Looks like Sugar Bay is the graveyard for boats! Obiously those are not all from the same time and some appear quite recent. Notice in one photo one partially above water with antennas. Surprising they are not made to salvage them as some appear to be a hazard to navigation. Many appear to not be wood and will lie there as eyesores for many years.
