Very nice Bill!! You are always a step ahead!!

Last night I worked on Dauntless too. I decided to keep the early Grumman style tender so I painted it and spent time working on the cradle for it too.  When Bill and I had the long conversation covering details we also noticed that the covered tender looked like there was a peak running along the middle of the tender cover. What this may have been was a piece of wood so that water wouldn't pool on the cover but would run off sort of like a roof. So today I took a square wod strip and shaped it triangular so that the peak is present and follow the same pattern. Also, today my mother in law is coming over so perhaps I can sweet talk her into making the cover for the tender.

Hi Bill,

Per our conversation the other day...

I found out the layout of the aft cockpit. Originally she had leather seating across the back wall but when they removed the port side seat in favor of the large fishing box they also removed the stb wall seat as well. Nothing was put in it's place. So there was the fish box, the boarding steps on prt-stbd side and the Vom Hofe fishing chair back there..

Also I saw some original reels that were on the Dauntless...All old school and high end...They were huge Marlin reels that came with the Dauntless..The biggest I personally had ever seen!!! So we have an idea what Mr. Rock was fishing in that cockpit...

I'm guessing that others fishing sat on the boarding benchs..

Hi Mike,

There were a few yachts named 'Saga' so try to find the one from above.

Saga was owned by Charles Payson who was Joan Whitney's husband. (Joan was the founder of the New York Mets and was prominent in promoting professional horse racing.). Joans brother John (Jock) Whitney was the owner of Aphrodite. The Commuter yacht Aphrodite that we all know was Actually Aphrodite III and she originally had a pearl gray hull and not black as she is known today. (Being the historian type I would build a grey hulled Aphrodite)  Both Jock and Charles used to race their Commuters to Wall Street to the New York Yacht Club docks each day for bragging rights. Both Aphrodite I and II were beat every time she raced Saga but later John finally commissioned Aphrodite III to finally humble Charles. John didn't like to lose so the Aphrodite III was built specifically to beat Saga..And she did...The races must have been awesome!!

The Commuter Saga seen above was built in 1935 in the Wheeler Shipyard in Brooklyn New York. She was 69' X 13'.5" X 4'. She originally had 2 V12 Packards that were later changed to Wright Typhons 600-HP each. The Typhons were finally changed to 3 GM 6-71 diesels. Except for her decks and overheads the entire boat was mahogany brightwork. She must have been spectacular to see in person. After Payne sold the boat her name became Nipper and I believe it was later changed back to Saga. The yacht is another once magnificent yacht that is no more..

There is a book called Yachts in a Hurry by C. Philip Moore. The author of the book owned Saga from 1960-1966 and there is much information in that book about her. I'm sure Mystic has more info if you provide some of the info in this post.

my e-mail address is: Atlanticswell@aol.com

I have a photo of Aphrodite on her trial run. I will take a picture of it post it soon enough.

-Rich.

You are the man, man!!

My mother in law is going to take my tender and make the cover..All I have to do is e-mail her a few pictures of what I want..She wants to make it elastic and I agree!!

Now that my LIPO trays were ripped out when I re-sealed her keel I am now thinking the placement of them. Now that I have decided to sacrafice engineroom accuracy I may see if I could arrange removable LIPO trays in the engineroom and not under the owners suite. This is because I have been having such a hassle with the massive amounts of wiring in the stern. This could potentially lighten the boat up a bit because there will be less heavy duty wires running everywhere. I will have to see if it is doable but the never ending changes are about to begin.

-Rich.

I just did a float test with the three lipos in the engineroom. The waterline looks good so I am going to make up the lipo trays and trim the wires. Before the side discharge outlet was above water and now it is on the waterline like a full sized vessel..It will be interesting to see how she runs...No water was in the hull from this float test which is a plus but I do have to reseal the keel in certain places. Perhaps she will be ready for an Oyster Bay run next month.

Relocating the lipos to.the engineroom should eliminate the following:

  • Constant fear of crushing a lipo with the cabin floor
  • Fear of pump motors melting lipo wires
  • Too many wires under the cockpit was pushing the structure upward
  • When getting up on plane the forecastle keel was out of the water...this should re-trim the boat
Now that there won't be anything under the owners cabin i'm thinking about the possibility of sealing it in place like the forecastle floor. This can act as a means of floatation to prevent sinking and it will be easier for me to add some of the cabin sconces inside the stateroom. before I seal it in I will see if there are wires that should be installed under the floor beforehand. The boat needs tons of work everywhere but i'm psyched to go back inside and detail the interior.

Ahoy Captains:
Things haven't worked out with MACK Products and Rich is no longer able to supply his power package for my Dauntless. I need propeller stuffing boxes, shafts, struts rudders and stuffing boxes etc. I have read on this forum that Dumas is not the best way to go. Does anyone have another vendor that they would recommend and can supply everything? I probably need to know proper length of boxes etc as I am a beginner with these boats and know nothing. Very frustrating day.

Stuffing boxes, shafts, props and couplers are readily available. The proper struts would most likely be the hard thing to get. The angle needs to be right as well as the distance offset fom the hull bottom. Personally I have had no problems with Dumas hardware package. I know DF had struts break but I have not had that problem and run the 700s wide open out of the water. I suspect some sort of imbalance would cause that problem.  (and droppage)

I just checked and Dumas does sell the struts separately. Stuffing boxes and shafts might be availale at Harbor Models depending on the dia and lgth. They are in California and usually things ordered from them arrive in 2 or 3 days even here in NY. BTW the only real difference in different stuffing tubes usually is just whether they have bushings or oilite bearings. If they don't have oilite bearings you may as well go with Dumas and buy the hardware set. They appear often on ebay. If you are good at brass work you can make your own struts out of soldered hobby store brass.

The Dumas stuffing tubes are not the end of the world. I am using them with success in my Dauntless..When I thought they were leaking I found out that it wasn't the case..Mine are as dry as can be after several long high RPM runs..In a perfect world the MACK ones are better quality but Rich is still recovering from Sandy and who knows how long it will take for his operation to fully recover from that...So I think you will be fine with good old school dumas stuffing tubes. As deep mentioned the strut quality improved, perhaps they revamped their stuffing tubes as well.

-Rich.

I agree with Rich. My boat has the original Dumas stuffing tubes that have been in place for many years and are still in use. They're holding up just fine.
