Rich, that may be true about the TBird but the Pawling Dauntless has Dumas.

BILL

I replaced most of my running hardware for MACK during the overhaul which includes, rudders, rudder stuffing boxes, tiller arms, prop struts and prop shafts. The only Dumas part left on her is the stuffing boxes for the props. This I will not likely change unless it is urgent because the stuffing box guards that I built would be a bear to remove.

I've tried to respond three times, lost everything I wrote, even thought I copied it, three times so therefore I quit trying.

Hi Deepsky,

Here's some more trim work for you.

In the aft cockpit there is trim around the side window. In the picture below it is painted gray but it was originally stained wood. Also, the window was plexiglass so that water wouldn't spray in while she was underway.

Hi captains,

Today I made an amazing discovery...I have a photo album that was given to me by a former owner. In it is many pictures of the D both inside and out. Anyway, there is a gorgous classic yacht that was taken from the bridge aboard the Dauntless. It looked like both yachts were sailing together. The yacht was named 'The Presidents' and in a google search I didn't find any yacht that went by that name. Today I happened to be on youtube  and a video of the former presidential yacht 'Honey Fitz" surfaced and what do you know...that happens to be the yacht that I have a photo of. The picture I have the yacht is in mint condition and it was taken in September of 1983. Thanks goodness that they used to stamp the back of photos. There is a sticky note on it that says: "Unknown- Taken from Dauntless". I'm sure whoever owns the Honey Fitz would love to see that picture...

The Honey Fitz was a presidential yacht to JFK and a few others.

When I have a moment I will scan and post it.

Here are videos of the yacht that sailed along with Dauntless on that day:

Well I did it. Spent more of my kids inheritance and bought the Sound Design PT boat sound system with 2 motor sounds for twin sticks, For the Dauntless of course.
Guess I secretly want to be like my buddy Rich.

Honey Fitz is a 92-foot commuter-style motoryacht that was built by the Defoe Boat Works in Bay City, Michigan, and christened Lenore II in 1931 by Sewell Avery, who ran Montgomery Ward and vigorously opposed President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s New Deal policies. Stories differ on how the boat passed from Avery to the U.S. Coast Guard in 1942. Whether Avery sold her or the government expropriated her is unclear, but the yacht saw service during World War II as a picket ship off Rockaway Point and Fire Island, New York. She also served as a training ship for submarine crews, and in June 1945 was refit to serve as tender to successive presidential yachts, the 165-foot USS Potomac and the 245-foot USS Williamsburg.

When Eisenhower assumed the presidency, he sent the lavish Williamsburg back to the Navy, where she had served as a patrol gunboat and communications vessel in World War II. He preferred the more conservative 92-footer, which he renamed Barbara Anne and used in Narragansett Bay and on the Potomac.

When Kennedy entered the Oval Office, he also renamed the presidential yacht. He called her Honey Fitz—the nickname of his beloved maternal grandfather, John Francis Fitzgerald, a two-time mayor of Boston. And as Kennedy enjoyed the yacht on the Potomac and in Newport and Palm Beach, Honey Fitz became part of the lore of Camelot. Sold off during the Nixon Administration, the yacht has been in private hands ever since.

Rich more info. After privatization notice the name on the bow. Also notice it is not the actual presidential seal. BTW notice she ran out of Indian Harbor in Greenwich where this photo was taken. I assume the photo you have was from when Debbie owned D.

Hi Bill,

This is some great information you pulled up. I'm glad to finally see another picture of her with the name 'The Presidents' on the bow. This is similar to how she looked in the photo. It is interesting that she was kept in Greenwich CT. The photo I have was from Don and it was taken on the day when his daughter was sitting on the seat in the bridge. I never thought to look at the back of that photo until yesterday. This is helping me with the timeline. She was still in nice shape in September of 1983 and she was repaired from the fire and sold in 1985. I have to look at my notes for the month.I think it was November of 85' when she was sold. I wonder if the fire happened in the Winter of 1984? There was snow all around her after the fire.

I am now intrigued on where 'The Presidents' was during September of 1983..This could tell us approximately where the Dauntless was during that time.

In the photo I have of that yacht there was also no seal on the stack. It must have been added later. I guess for those that don't know the yacht would think that it was there when Kennedy had it..She is a beauty!!

-Rich.

OOOhhh very nice!! She will sound very cool when it is set up. This is a reminder for me to do the same. When I reset the wires and add the LIPOS in the engineroom i'll be sure to hook up the module. What company did you get the module from?

Even though the Dauntless has me chained down I have always had a very strong love for those classic gentleman motoryachts from the 1920's and 30's.

Been doing a little sprucing up of my D the past few week or so. She will be at a mall show March 24 as will the big Kahuna's (Rich) . Mine is not in that league but some touching up was needed so as not to be to embarassed. If there is time the new sound system will be in and operable by then also. One of the sprucing up jobs was moving the radar mast guy wires more outboard and reshaping the platform. Also needed to do some work on the sliding hatches as one had cracked and the other warped. These wound up necessitating a repaint of the owners cabin top since the touchup did not blend. Got a new and improved name and port coming from Callie for the transom. Sent her the photo of big D without the top showing the transom so she could get the correct fonts. Repainted the bottom since she was dinged up from use and the sinking. Looking at what else I should do while I am in between builds at the moment. Radar alongside the helm? Maybe.

 Hi Bill,

This sounds awesome!! Be sure to post pictures of your updates!!!

Hey..On the day of the Mall show would you want to take your Dauntless sailing in Oyster Bay where the Jakobsen shipyard was located? Right where the shipyard was is now a large park and the boats can be launched right there.. This can be another historical sail but with both of our boats. We can do this either before or after the show..

This looks like a perfect place to run our Dauntless's..

Whatcha think?

Captains,

Took advantage a warm day and spray painted the interior of the hull.  The motors and  drive shafts are all lined up nicely now.  Found a few minutes to set up the rudder servo and it works well, still needs a little alignment though.  I think I'll put this Dauntless on fleebay soon.  If  I get what I want out of her - Great!  If not I'll keep her and do what needs to be done to the exterior and make her (me) proud.  Here's a pic, including one of the exterior to remind you of the work needed on the outside (this is the way I bought her).
