Hi every one! I'm a brand new member and am building my first boat...The Dauntless by Dumas. I chose it because she's a pretty boat an she's big and wide so she'll carry a lot of weight. 2-12V batts for along run time.
I have the Dumas 12V motors and speed controls, but I'm thinking of installing the two Johnson 970 motors I have but I don't know about room for larger props. Does any body re-pitch?
On the subject of the pointed bow, I did not use the vertical placed pieces in the bow. I just continued all the way forward with the planks. It took a lot of time but her bow is more fine. I'll post pic's after fairing is done.
And how is the glass conforming to the chine?
Dennis

Dennis,

Welcome Aboard. There is a lot of info compiled on this forum that should be good references as you move along with this project. If you get stuck drop a line and one of us will see you through.

In your post you mentioned having the 12V Dumas motors and speed controls and are already looking to change to the Johnson Motors. If you are already thinking this, this early in the building stages, then the best thing to do is to try to return your Dumas set up before you try it out. The longer you wait, the less likely the merchant will be on accepting them. You can always say, that you are still building and have not tried them but would like to persue other options.

There is a huge difference between the Dumas 12V and Johnson 970's as far as speed goes. The Dumas 12V "Pittman style" motors will not get you to plane, but will top out at about 3MPH full throttle. ( Dumas confirmed this on the sheet provided with the blueprints) I also know this, because that is exactly what i did when i bought my Dauntless. (Good if you are looking for a slower "Scale" set up.) The 970's from what i read on the Donzi forum will get you to plane out and then some. (Good if you want higher speeds)

The Dumas suggested props are a good ratio for a boat this size, but a little research on what others are doing on a boat Dauntless's size will help you come to a conclusion right for you. Then again, you can run tests on your final set-up and decide from there.

As far as glassing goes, i am better at doing than explaining, but i would suggest adding the spray rails after glassing, just not to complicate things more.

-Rich.

Dear Dauntless Captains,

Recently, i began working on the main cabin windshield to bring it more to original scale and it is coming along as planned. I should have it finished in the next few days. Also, i am beginning the phase of building water tight bulkheads in the engine room forward and aft, as well as finishing up on other items such as the vent installation and 100 other odd's & ends.

Also, i ordered a Power Distribution panel for my reciever and lighting accessories as well as a pair of Astro 25's, and accessories that go with them.

I chose the Astro 25's over the 40's because i will be running on a 12V system and the 25's push 9900RPM per motor VS the 40's on 7716RPM based on 12V.

That's all for now, I will post pics in the next week or so.

-Rich.

On another note,

I now have the rest of the items i needed for the galley and bath. All 3 toilets, sinks, stove, fridge etc. All items are from the 1940's and the scale is authentic to Dauntless.

Okay Rich... when you can cook mirco-macaroni on the little stove and make all those tiny toilets actually flush, THEN I'll be impressed.

Just kidding , can't wait to see more pics!

Dear Captains,

This past week, i spent a lot of time on Dauntless. Enclosed are pics of what i have been working on.

*The vents are built and now installed. Once the Bridgedeck floor is sealed in place, water traps will be added to them.

*The Main Cabin Windshield is complete as well, ready for primer.

*I decided to build and install 3 sealed bulkheads in Dauntless. 2 for the Engine room, and one revised for entering the forward cabin.

Enclosed are pics of the forward engine room bulkhead. The Bulkhead has 2 chambers that run under the main cabin floor. The chambers will house partial battery packs for the left and right motors.

The Bowlip is installed as well. When i cut the Bowlip out of Aluminum i cut the cleat slots as well, but decided to epoxy the cleat side to Dauntless giving the resin more bite to the aluminum.. Soon enough, i will cut new cleats into the bowlip.

Here are some of the furniture i have accumulated for Dauntless's Head & Galley. Most are from Ebay so i have duplicates of certain items. Some of this stuff will have to be customized, so having extras are a plus. Anyting left over will make it's way back to ebay after the overhaul is complete. The Main built in Furniture in Dauntless: Beds, Tables , Seating etc are scratch built.

Hi Rich;
I hope and pray that I did not step on your toes yesterday. You do wonderful work on your boat. I may have not expressed my opinion in the most tactful way. Please forgive me for being too nosy. Thank you for your efforts to keep this thread interesting and informative.

I haven't got mine out in a while. I have no excuse. She's become quite the shelf queen. Still have those new motors to install.

Meanwhile I've been trying see if I might have a use for a pair of pumps (NOT as in women's high heels ) that I have lying around. When you run them at 6 volts (half the rated voltage), the big belt-driven gear spins slow, with a sound and vibration like little engines at idol. Might be a cool effect in the Dauntless when she's just floating stationary? They spit out a decent stream of water, but not the blast that Rich is probably looking for. Since they are peristaltic, they can run dry and are self priming, the pressure (not volume) is impressive too.

Sorry I'm babbling again.

Dauntlessfan,

That is a cool gizmo you have there... I'm sure there is a creative way to get it to work in Dauntless.. Hmmm, do i see working plumbing in your Dauntless's future!

There is no such thing as babbling here!

As I look through my parts bin, I've got a couple 'strings' of tiny red/green blinking LED christmas lights made for those little Christmas dioramas. Might be fun to run from bow, to top of radar mast, to stern and float around at the park at dusk...

BTW I had to change my user name if I've managed to totally confuse anyone.

Need advice on powering my Dauntless. I am using Mack hardware with 2.2" 3 blade props. I don't know if I should go with the Mack 4 motor set-up at 2:1 reduction or the Mack 2 motor set-up at 2 or 3:1 reduction. The Dauntless was a fast boat for her size, any advice?

Dauntlessfan,

Caught onto the name change, very cool by the way!

It would be awesome to see the Christmas lights set up on your Dauntless from Bow, Mast to stern. It would be a very classy addition for the holiday season.

Just make sure you post pics!!!
