LClark,

Dauntless was fast for her size and the model should reflect some of that. I am not sure what your speed requirements are, but i noticed on the large fast scale models like Dauntless & Donzi Z65, many folks have been successful on running them on direct drive.

Dear Dauntless Captains:

Here is what i have done this week:

The entire inside hull below the water line has been given a coat of epoxy to protect the wood from water and to add strength to the hull.

A new bulkhead was built and installed between the main cabin and the forward cabin. It is also water tight.

The forward cabin floor has been given 3 coats of polyurathane and still needs more. I also trimmed it for eventual permanent installation. (The floor will be sealed in place with epoxy and will create a watertight chamber below the floor in the empty space.)

I started making adjustments to the forward cabin walls for permanent installation. They cannot be completed totally until i build the ceilings which should start soon.

I made the forward cabin windows and vents, cut out windows and fitted. Tonight, i am going to take the opportunity to fit 1/8" wood strips under the cover where it rests on the hull, starting forward going back to main cabin, epoxy the strips in place, so that i can build out a sill (like on real yachts) for asthetics and to keep water from leaking into the interior. (for the model)

Once the strips are in place, the windows and vents will be mounted in place flush with the exterior and the vents will have a very thin frame epoxied around the perimeter.

The hatch over the forward cabin has been sealed so that it can be relocated slightly aft.

I purchased the paint for the yacht and special ordered the blue so i am waiting for it to arrive.

-Rich.

By the end of the week, the windows/vents will be permanently mounted.

Dear Dauntless Captains:

The cabin supports/windows/vents are in as planned. Tonight, i have to continue to sand and fill.

Also, i stumbled on another tid-bit with Dauntless mentioned.

Mr. Rockefeller revealed an unusual mix of ingenuousness and perhaps chutzpah when he wrote an article for the Readers Digest in 1976 titled, "The Case for a Simpler Life." The author, who owned paintings by Bonnard and Gainsborough, many large houses, his own plane, a Bentley among other cars, and a 65-foot speed boat cited his family's view that waste was always sinful.

(The Author was Laurance, but i left out the unrelated details.)

The 65 foot speedboat would be Dauntless, being she came in at 65'10". I found it Intersting that she was referred to as a speed boat...

I think they should have referred to it as a 65-foot chick magnet .

Well I got them out of storage, and found some tiny white christmas lights in there too... hope to string it up and throw it on the pond after dark for pics soon.

I just want to thank everyone who has posted pictures and information on the Dauntless.

I recently ran across this thread and am now inspired to get back to work on the Dauntless that I started over 20 years ago. Getting married and having a child put a stop to the build. Now that my daughter is off to college and we are empty nester's I can dedicate some time to getting it running. All of the pictures will definitely help me fill in the blanks in the Dumas instructions

Thanks for all of your research and time to post the information about the yacht.

Dauntless Captains,

Here are a few things i have been working on:

**The windows & vents in the forward cabin have been installed, epoxied and sanded.

**The forward crew hatch has been relocated.

**The beams to the forward cabin ceiling have been cut and the light frames are built. Tonight, i will begin gluing the frames.

Thank you Marty!

Last night i centered and glued the frame together. Tonight, i am going to measure and cut the hatch going into the forward cabin and then set up beams to go around the hatch opening.

Over the weekend, i am going to do the same for the main cabin.

Once both frames are built, i will have a planking party!

Anyone wanna come.. lol.

Dauntless Captains,

Last night, i removed the tape from the frames. The frame is now removable.

Also added wood strips to the top of the fwd cabin bulkhead, sanded and trim them to fit the cover snug. See pic.

The hatch was also cut going into the forward cabin, but before i knew it, it was midnight and did not get to add beams and cut the ceiling beam over the hatch as planned.

Hi Rich;
You are doing a fine job! You will have invested as much time in your "Dauntless" as the S&S group put into the original craft.
Warm building,
Chuck

Thank you Chuck.

The amount of time and thought that has gone into this build has been an overwealming process. I started this "overhaul" 1 year ago and thought that i would have been finished by now. It seems that i will do this for another year to get it the way i want it. I really enjoy working on this and watching it take shape and all, but everything takes so long and nothing on this build happens as quickly as i would like it to..I need the S&S group to jump in and speed things up....so i can finally slip her into water..where she belongs.

How is your build coming along? What have you been doing with Dauntless these days? pls share.

regards.

-Rich.

Started on the Dauntless Christmas lights tonight. They are tiny, delicate strands with micro-LEDs. Did a dry-run just laying the strands along the hull edges... looks kinda cool. How am I going to temporarily attach these?

I just have to remember that these LEDs are highly directional, meaning if they are not all pointing in exactly the same direction, some will appear bright, others very dim. Also wonder if the bulbs will need to hang over the deck to reflect off the water when/if picture time comes around?

Hopefully I'll have time to finish this before the holidays are gone. If so I'll post pics for everyone.

Hi Dauntlessfan.

enclosed are 2 pics i found off the internet, maybe they will be helpful.

I can't see from the pics, but do you have an anchor winch toward the bow of Dauntless? (That piece of dowel that That dumas wanted us to shape and mount toward the bow) A good suggestion is to tie string at the end of the light strip and attach to the winch. OR maybe use this opportunity to make the flagpole on the bow of Dauntless. Not a bad idea! (use the same steps for winch) Run it to the radar mast, secure with string, and run to stern. I am not sure if you have the cleat back there, but that would be a good place to end the strip attached to string OR attach to your flagpole. Even though the lights are not pointed in the same direction, it is fine, because it will still look cool.

Best of luck!

-Rich.

Thanks for the ideas! Yeah, I think I'll hang one strand bow-mast-stern like originally planned. But using a few more to make an outline of the boat's lines is definately tempting.

Those pics are great. What's with that yacht that has all the lights below the waterline? Never seen anything like that before. Are those for night swimming in the Bahamas? Checking for sharks before skinny dipping? Typical answer I'm sure is "if you have to ask... you can't afford it." And I'm fairly certain I can't even afford to be friends with someone who can afford it .

Anytime Dauntlessfan, Have fun with the light installation. I am looking forward to pics!

Maan those waterline lights are cool. That is a first for me, i have never seen anything like it before finding this pic. Your guess is as good as mine, if i could afford something like that, i would not rule out swimming at night in the Bahamas or any other exotic destination for that matter....Until i hit a huge lotto, find a cure for a disease, or cut a few hit songs, i will continue to keep my imagination in scale boating.

On that note, lights like that would be a perfect addition to a scale megayacht build... i will keep that in archives for a future project.

Dauntless captains.

Today, i decided to take a few hours and get organized by creating a laundry list of all the open items left on Dauntless that need to be completed in order to get her out on the water. As i finish each task, i will cross it off the list. This is the best way to manage this project and bring it to completion. At this point, i have 89 open items on the list.(If i remember some later, i will add.) All tasks will be done in order. Some are easy, while others are challenging. At the end, this yacht will hopefully be a close scale replica to the original Dauntless.

-Rich.
