I apologize for interrupting the ongoing discussion here.
I figured this would be the best place to ask. I recently purchased the Dauntless Kit.
After reviewing the thread. . One question came to mind.

What is the approximate build time in hours to get to the point shakee is on Page 6?

Electicos,

You are not interrupting an ongoing discusssion. You are always welcome to join us at any time.

I thought about your question. Key words: IN HOURS.....minus glassing...per Shakee...Consider glassing your Dauntless!!..

I thought good and hard...tough question... tried to think back 10 years and add the hours and cut out bathroom breaks, cigarette breaks, food breaks..people breaks and beer breaks. Pure nose to the grindstone...

I'm dizzy now, I have to pass this one to the next Dauntless Captain.....i tried...

All i know is: it was a lot of hours.....

BTW, Welcome aboard..

-Rich.

Hi Eclecticos;
Time clocks are for work! The "Dauntless" is for fun! I made a name lable to put inside the boat as I was building her, but now I have to make a new one to include 2008. Happy building.

Do these appear to be in the correct order?

Nevermind, I got it figured out.

Dear Captains,

I will be posting some pics soon. I took some time for the holidays but did manage to get the forward ceiling planked and smoothed. (very time consuming but worth it.) I do need to add some mouldings in and around the lights, vents and hatch openings to complete it.

The main cabin ceiling is also in the framing process. I still need to fine tune the hatch opening over the main cabin in order to continue framing.

The ceilings themselves are very light construction which is good because i do not want this yacht to be more top heavy than it needs to be for the amount of given detail. The beams and planks are re inforced with a very light coat of epoxy for durability.

The beams will have notches cut into them for wiring pathways.

All ceilings will be painted white.

Dauntless Captains,

Here are a few pics of the planked forward cabin ceiling along with the main cabin ceiling beams.

Note: Each 3/4" square in the ceiling will contain 1 light with a plexiglass & wood trimmed cover.

The gally and 1 1/2 fwd baths will have 1 ceiling light per room. The crew stateroom will have (2) ceiling lights total and possibly (2) sconces on the bureau wall all the way forward.

The main cabin will have (2) total 3/4" square lights in the ceiling and each wall support between windows will have a sconce. (4 sconces total.) 6 total lights in main cabin.

-Rich

Dear Captains,

Here is the starboard profile. I ordered 2 metal fairleads a while back for the bow, and still waiting for them to arrive for installation. Once i get the fairleads for the bow, i am going to cut into the bowlip removing part of the aluminum on each side and epoxy the fairleads in place. Once they are in place, i will fill and smooth using epoxy.

The end result should be similar to the Original Dauntless.

Dauntlessfan,

I know, it seems almost ashame, the planking would look great stained. Yachts of this era including Sparkman & Stephens would commonly plank ceilings, paint them white and trimmed the ceilings with stain moulding or planks. I am going to continue in the tradition of her era. When i planked the ceilings, i made sure not to plank too tight so that when they are painted, they will still show individual detail of being planked and will sport mahogany stained trim..

It will make sense when Dauntless finally goes into her "pretty" stage.

Dear Captains,

This past weekend, i did the following:

1) re trimmed the doorways and hatch openings to the owners cabin.

2) primed the entire exterior.

I can finally "see" again. She doesn't look as if she sailed through the devil's workshop anymore. With so many parts sanded and corrected over time, it was hard to see where i was. after priming, I can now see what areas still need attention and i can focus on tuning those areas so that i can finally get her painted. Hopefully soon enough, i will do some more work to the interior so that i can paint it white as well.

Here as some pics.

-Rich

To Rich 404

How are you going to power your boat? I've picked up a dauntless from a decaseased friend, the hull and body are just about done, but I have no idea on how to power it? Any suggestions.

I'm acually a new boater, working on my first Boothbay Lobster boat right now. But saw your post, and I may get to mine in another year. I've looked at the MACK place or whatever they call it, they sell a full set of gear for like $300 or more.

I am certainly not the most experienced modeler here but............
I purchased my dauntless running gear from MACK Products and found it to be very high quality, well worth the price. Yesterday I ordered motors, gear reducers and speed controls from them as well. I have spoken to the same gentleman twice, he is very knowledgeable and freindly.

mrbsltz,

I will be using (2) Astroflight 25 Marine motors with (2) Astroflight Harbor Master speed controls. I decided to get 2 speed controls because i want to run each motor independantly which will require me to use a radio with dual throttles. The motors will be direct drive.

I will also use (2) 12V high MAH rated NIMH Battery packs, (1) for each motor/speed control.

There will also be a seperate 12V electrical system with a power distribution panel for all of my lighting and accesories.

If you want, you can use 1 speed control with the 2 motors and will run together on a single throttle. Those 3 items will still cost around or slightly less than $300.00.

I really like Astroflight because they make a very reliable product with the performance i want on this yacht.

you can find their products on astroflight .com

On another note, do you have any pics of your "new" Dauntless? How much more work does it need before completion? Did the former owner ever sail her?

Got to run my Dauntless today, great time. A few folks stopped to ask questions and take pics... great for the ego . I was sort of bummed because one stuffing tubes is letting a little bit of water into the hull now. That's never happened before. It probably needs to be 'stuffed' with grease again. Here are a few pics I was able to get as well. Enjoy!

Dauntlessfan,

WOW!!!!!! Those pics look fantastic! It looks like you took pics of a full sized original! Great job!

Don't let the water leak damper an otherwise great day, it's just maintenance, goes with the territory!
